Locke had said that she summoned Phoenix. The Phoenix…as in one of The Lost. How was that possible?
As happy as it made her for Yuna to think she was capable of summoning a creature - whether she remembered doing it or not - like Phoenix, it still worried her. Well, maybe it didn’t so much as worry her as it did make her wonder. The Great Phoenix hasn’t been summoned in years…sense before Yuna even began practicing as a full-fledged summoner, actually. He was one of the few summon spirits that just stopped responding to the calls of the Summoners from Destiny Islands. No one even knew why it had happened. Some spirits just…disappeared. Yuna hadn’t even ever seen Phoenix with her own eyes. He was only as familiar to her as the stories her father would tell her about the spirit when she was a child allowed him out to be. As confident as Yuna was in her skills as a competent summoner, she had to wonder why Phoenix would suddenly return and choose her of all people to summon him in the middle of no where. Wouldn’t he have wanted his return to be through a stronger summoner, and wouldn’t he have wanted it to be a grand event that could be remembered? As of right now, only four people were lucky enough to witness the event, and Yuna - being one of them - couldn’t even remember it. Of all people to forget…she should have done better. After all, if the summoner of a group didn’t know of things like that, then they probably weren’t strong enough.
How had it even happened? She didn’t call for the aide of a spirit. At least, not that she knew of. Had Phoenix don’t it himself? No…that wouldn’t make any sense. Something like that wasn’t possible. She’d been taught to know that a Summon needed the help of a human to be pulled to this side. They simply couldn’t do it by themselves.
The teenager sighed as she lied in bed, her sleepy and emotionally drained Guardian lying next to her, practically dead to the world. They were on a ship - the Strahl - that was floating around what looked like space, even though this particular area of space looked like a wide ocean of black water under an impossibly busy sky of stars and comets and all other sorts of celestial bodies. Really…Yuna still didn’t even understand how they’d gotten there. One minute, she and Locke were walking home in Destiny Islands and the next, Yuna was waking up on a space ship. Then, that ship got attacked by little black things that were tearing the ship apart. If it weren’t for Phoenix…Yuna didn’t know what would have happened, and chose not to think about it. Either way, the fiery deity had saved them, and now they were here…on a second ship.
Locke has tried explaining everything to her, but Yuna had the feeling that Locke didn’t even understand everything, either. It was unlike her, but Yuna stopped trying to understand and just went along with everything as best she could. At that point, she was just too tired to care. Now, however, she’d gotten enough rest and her mind has begun to work the right way. She’d woken up in the middle of the night to find Locke latched onto her like a teddy bear and had found his being there a comfort, but even that couldn’t stop her mind from reeling. She’d woken up several more times after that. It was a wonder how she managed to get enough sleep.
She was embarrassed. According to Locke, Yuna had literally been passed out for more than half of everything. She honestly couldn’t remember anything about the first ship or it‘s crew. Snow, one of the people they were apparently traveling with now, had called the ship the Serenity. She didn’t remember anything about it other than images of Locke after Phoenix had been dismissed. She remembered Locke looking down at her with such exhaustion and relief all in the same look. He’d seen everything as it happened and had told her a little about it. Yuna really did wish she remembered. According to what Locke had said, Phoenix sounded impressive and very powerful.
But why here and why now? It didn’t really make much sense. That Keyblade of Locke’s only proved to complicate things even more. All of it was intertwined somehow. Yuna wanted to figure it out before it all got too out of hand. She was thankful that she and Locke were well and had a place to stay before they went home, but she was concerned. As okay as everything seemed right now, something just seemed wrong.
