So. I'm in Mexico. I spent the day snorkling, eating tacos, and building a giant sea turtle out of sand (by the way, it's amazing). I love it here, except for the language barrier. Because whenever people start talking to me in Spanish, I start doing something strange.
I talk back in Japanese.
In fact, I'm almost as bad as my dad. he doesn't speak spanish either, and keeps kind of bursting into this sort of Italian-German-Spanglish thing. For example, instead of "gracias", he always says "grattzi". Oh, and in his Italian accent too, which makes it worse...
So I guess it turns out that when someone speaks to you in a different language, your automatic reaction is to speak in a different language too, but you can only speak whatever you know.
So no one be offended if they walk up to me, say "Como te llamas " and I reply by saying "Watashi ha genki desu. Arigatou gozaimasu!" Cause I can't help it.
Oh, but you can be offended if I say "Anata no okaasan ha neko-sushi wo tabemasu!"
Unless your mom really does eat cat sushi.
