a little brown book
finding the life of Alexander Shaw, a kind of serial story.
“Have either of you ever seen the tower of London?” I asked.
They both shook their heads.
“Well, I think the tower means that.”
“That's a little linear, you know.” Saki scoffed.
“The card isn't a place.”
“I suppose not.” I was making tea. If I closed my eyes, I could almost see Cedric at the tower. Only I could see him as he was, not dressed in the strange costume of the King of swords. For a moment that confused me, but then I let it go.
I let it go because I had one more night. If he wanted them ahead of time, chances are he would come for them tonight. I wished I knew what kind of spell he was suing; so I'd better know how to combat it. As I turned around, I saw a shadow on the wall where it didn't belong and felt a thin tendril of power. Without thinking, I dropped the tea pot, and lashed out with my hand without thinking. Following the arch of my hand came the humming silver of the chain and it's key. It wrapped around the shadow, pulling it off of the wall and out into the room. The twins were horrified, and stumbled back away from it. I was as startled as the twins, but tried not to show it. Apparently my spell had done more than just duplicate it for the twins; it had changed it.
“Saki, get my box.” I said, hand still out. The little shadow creature struggled, and the chain only wrapped itself tighter. I curled my hand closed, palm up, and it squealed. The twins rushed, up, and I flipped open the box they'd brought. It wasn't a large box, hardly the size of a valise, and it held various supplies that I used in magic, chalk, herbs, candles, string, and my uncle's grimorie.
“Table or floor?” I asked Suki. She nodded and rolled back the rug on the floor, as I fished out a piece of chalk in it's holder. Containment circles are complicated things, but I'd studied a great deal of them- and it was actually easier since I didn't know what I needed to hold. I only needed that it not be able to escape and that it would talk and truthfully. Saki went about lighting all of the lamps we had, and a few extra candles, as I quickly sketched out a containment circle and shook my hand as if I was shaking water off of it, casting the shadow creature into the circle. It slunk about trying to get out, but remained trapped by the chalk likes that glowed like foxfire where they'd been drawn on the floor boards. Almost thoughtfully, Saki lit more candles.
“Alright little shadow;” I said eyes narrowed. “Let's see what cast you, hmmm?”
