For Adam Freeman, moving to Spooksville wasn’t something he’d planned. But being only twelve, he hadn’t a lot to say in the matter. They had to move, his parents said, because of his father’s job. Of course, when they told him about Spooksville, they didn’t call it that. Springville was the proper name of the small Oceanside town. It was only the local kids who called it by the scarier, but more accurate, title. It was only kids who knew how weird this place could get after the sunset.
Or even during the day.
That was the thing about Spooksville.
Not all its monsters waited until the sun went down to appear.
As he unpacked the removal van and carried his stuff up to his new room, Adam didn’t believe in monsters or the supernatural. But that was soon to change…
“Adam”, his father called from inside the house. “Can u go to the 7-Eleven and buy a six-pack of Coke”
“Sure” replied Adam and he went away.
It was while Adam was returning from the store with the Cokes that he met Sally Wilcox. She sneaked up on him from behind. A pretty girl about his age, she had long brown like hair and a stick-like figure that somehow made her look prettier. It was a hot day, and her long legs beneath her mini skirt were tanned and bony. She had the widest brown eyes Adam had ever seen, and she didn’t look like any other girls.
“Hello”, she said. “Are you the new kid in town?”
“I suppose so. I just got here”
“My name is Sara Wilcox, but you can call me Sally””What’s yours”
“I’m Adam Freeman” replied Adam.
“Why are you looking so sad Adam” Sally asked.
“I’m not sad” replied Adam.
Sally nodded to herself. “You left someone special behind. I understand”
Adam blinked. “What are you talking about?” This girl was weird.
“You don’t have to be embarrassed. You are a good-looking guy. You must have a good-looking girlfriend wherever you came from” She paused.” Where are you from anyway?”
“Kansas City.”
Sally nodded sympathetically. “She’s a long way away now.”
“Who” said Adam.
She tossed her long hair impatiently. “If you don’t want to talk about her it’s OK.”
“I’m telling you that I don’t have any girlfriend in Kansas City” said Adam.
“Yeah, Yeah”Sally muttered.
“How long have you been living here?” Adam asked.
“For twelve years. All my life. I’m one of the lucky ones.”
“You mean it’s really neat living in Springville”
“No I mean I’m lucky to be alive still. Not all kids last twelve years in Spooksville.”
“What’s Spooksville?”Adam asked anxiously.
Sally spoke in a serious tone. “It’s where you are living now, Adam. Only adults call it Springville. “Kids know the real story of this place. And let me tell you it deserves to be called Spooksville.”
Why is Sally calling this place Spooksvile? Is she lying to Adam? What is the real story of Spooksville? What did Sally mean by “I’m lucky to be alive still.”?
You will know all these in Chapter 2 of Spooksville…
