The best way to prevent hackings/scammings is to just be VERY careful with your password. Never ever ever give it to anyone ever for any reason. I'm not saying you did, but it's always worth mentioning. No real moderator or Admin would ever ask for your password. We do not need your password for any reason. So anyone claiming to be a mod or Admin that asks for your password is really a scammer just trying to hack your account.
Never input your Gaia password into anything that's not part of www.gaiaonline.com. A lot of scammers nowadays are making fake surveys and other such questionnaires that ask for your password. They promise things like free gold or items in return. This is a scam! So never put your password into anything like that.
Another thing that can happen is some scammers will make fake copies of Gaia's homepage. They'll use all the same graphics and etc to try and trick someone into thinking its really Gaia. But all you have to do is check the web address of such pages. If it doesn't begin with http://www.gaiaonline.com, then it's NOT really Gaia. So don't put your password into these types of sites either.
Some people will also sometimes just give their passwords to real life friends or family members thinking that they can trust them. This is also a bad thing to do. You never know when someone may get mad at you or may just get a bit too greedy and use that password against you to hack your account. So don't give your password to any friends or family members either.
And, ALWAYS have a hard to guess password. If everyone knows your favorite color is red, then don't use "red" in your password! It would be too easy to guess. The BEST and most SAFE passwords are usually a combination of letters, numbers, and punctuation. Gaia also allows for case-sensitive passwords, so you can use uppercase and lowercase letters in your password. A password like that may initially be difficult to remember, but it's better for you in the long run since it will be harder for a hacker to guess.
Also, never use the "remember me" option on a public computer. If you do that, then the next person who uses that computer after you can log onto your account easily since you saved your password into the browser's cache.
And one last thing, always keep your computer free of viruses, spyware, adware, and malware. These things can contain keyloggers that can record your password and send it to a hacker. So always make sure you regularly scan your computer for these things and fix them ASAP!
Please also note the following: If someone has PMed you asking for your password, please report it immediately! If you would like, you can send me a quote and/or screen capture of the PM you got and I will be happy to handle it for you right now.
If you're unfamiliar with how to make a screen capture, here is a good guide to check out : Click here please!
Also, here is some more information about real mods VS scammers from a recent Announcement:
[NPC] Cindy Donovinh Mods, Admins and NPCs... Have their usernames tinted in purple, green, teal, red or orange. Will NEVER EVER ask you for your password. Will not send you PMs asking if you want to beta-test the Battle System or any other feature! May have [NPC] in front of their name, but never anything else like "[MOD]." Aren't jerks! Except maybe Ron Bruise... Jerks...Do not have purple, green, teal, red or orange usernames. Will ask you for your password so they can hack you! Will tell you that you will get gold for clicking on mysterious links (they are lying). Will try to trick you by having phony names like "MOD BANNING BOT" or something. The only automated accounts that will PM you are the "admin" account and "[NPC]" accounts with red usernames. And they will NEVER ask for your password! Will add things like "[MOD]" and "[NCP]" (notice that it is nCp instead of nPc) in front of their names to try to trick you! Some people use [NCP] as a roleplaying thing; those people aren't necessarily jerks. But if they ask for your password, REPORT 'EM! Are JERKS! If anyone ever asks for your password in a PM, even if they seem to have a reasonable story and you're totally convinced that they're a mod ( hint: they're not a mod if they ask for your password!), report the PM right away so we can ban the heck out of the jerk who sent it to you! If this all sounds too complicated, just remember this: don't ever give anybody your password for any reason! There is absolutely no reason that a real mod or admin will ever, ever need to ask for your password!
