Night fell, and Capt. Deep headed down into her quarters with Will after they had tossed the anchor into the sea. Capt. Deep lay down in her bed, and Will headed over to his couch. “Good night Rina, I’ll see you in the morning.” Will said.
Capt. Deep sat up and replied “Aye, in the morning Will.”
Will smiled, then lay down and closed his eyes to sleep. Capt. Deep also lay down and drifted off to sleep. But in the dead of night, Capt. Deep heard steps on the stairs. She silently rolled out of bed and ducked down out of sight. She grabbed her swords from the desk where she had laid them which were near her bedside and she crawled down to the foot of the bed.
But then she listened more closely to the noise, and the steps were going from her room, not into it. She put on her hat, and her bird ruffled his feathers. “Shh, you stay here.” Capt. Deep said to her bird.
The parrot stretched his wings, but stayed and watched his master walk out onto the deck with her swords ready to strike. She came out and found Will with a small cup of water and he was walking towards the bow. “Will, what are you doing out here? It’s going to get cold tonight.” Capt. Deep called to him, putting away her swords.
“I’m just looking around to see if there’s anything that looks dangerous.” Will said, not looking back at her.
“There’s nothing out there, as far as I know.” Capt. Deep said, joining him. “Did you hear something?”
“No, something just doesn’t feel right here is all.” Will said.
“It’s fine Will, but if it makes you feel better stay out here, scout the horizon, and I’ll wait for you in my room.” Capt. Deep said
Will nodded, “I’ll be down as soon as I feel better.” Will said.
Capt. Deep put her hand on his shoulder and ran it down the length of his arm, then walked down into her room.
Capt. Deep put her hat and her swords on her desk, and patted her still awake bird on his head. She loved her bird almost as much as Will. She laughed as she remembered the time she killed a man because he threatened her precious bird. She felt bad about it at first but she really didn’t mind now. She was considered the first pirate with a scrap of heart, but it could only hold so much – after all, it was only a scrap of heart.
