An average girl on her 18th birthday.
It was late noon and the sun still shown it’s hot rays down on the earth. In a thick timber woods roamed a young girl about the age of 18. Her long autumn red hair was blowing gently in the summer breeze. The girl wore denim jeans and a pastel blue t-shirt along with sneakers shoes.
She took a few stops to look around, as to take in the surroundings. “These woods are long....better not go to far or I’ll get lost.” She said wiping the sweat from her brow. “It’s so peaceful!” She smiled as she listened to the birds singing and the crickets chirping in their bushes. “Kat?! Honey where are you?!” A woman’s voice yelled from the beginning of the woods. “Coming mom!” the girl hollered back.
Coming out of the woods, the girl was confronted by two people in their late thirties. “Don’t worry us like that! We didn’t know where you were.” the woman said, hugging her. “Sorry mom, dad. I just went to explore, nothing else. Don’t worry I always be careful.” she explained giving both the man and woman a hug. “Well we better hurry home before it gets to late. I got to mow the lawn.” Said her father heading for the car.
“Guess what tomorrow is?” Asked her mother in a happy tone. “My birthday.” The girl answered with a smile. “Let’s see what age would you be? 81?” Her dad teased. “No! I’ll be 18!” The girl corrected still smiling. She adjusted her seatbelt so she could lean forward in the car to enter her parents conversations. “What do you want?” asked the mother. “I don’t know. I like anything.” the girl said thinking about what she would like. “Better let us now quickly, or else!” Her dad said, giving her a teasing grin and then directing his attention back to the road. “Else what?” She asked watching her father. “Else you get nothing!” He replied. “Honey!” The mother cut in. “Oh she knows I’m just picking.” He said defending himself as he still held his smile. The girl laughed a small laugh and leaned back into her seat as to watch the passing scenery.
They arrived home to a blue double wide house. The dad backed the car in and everyone went inside. Night came fast and the sun’s light was completely replaced by the moon’s light. The girl was in her room which was the door on the right. She was staring out the window in deep thought. “Just another birthday....I wonder if anything exciting will happen?” She asked herself. “Probably not. That’s ok though...” She found a sparkling star to look at. It’s shine amazed her and made her start to dream. Before she knew it she fell fast asleep.

Morning arrived early for the girl and she was awoken by her mother. “Wake up sleepy head! Time to start the party!” Her mother cheered and went into the kitchen. “Uhh...” the girl moaned sleepily as she tried rubbing the sleep from her eyes. She got out of bed and got dressed in a soft colored dark green shirt with navy jeans. Brushing her long hair, she tied it back with a hair barrette to keep it falling into her eyes. Then she headed out of her room toward the kitchen.
Her eyes brightened as she seen the chocolate layered chocolate icing cake with a flower icing design. Only two candles that formed the numbers 18 were in the middle of the cake. “Happy Birthday!!” Her parents sang as the clap their hands in enjoyment. The girl was smiling a broad smile. “Make a wish!” Her mother said. The girl closed her eyes and began to think. ‘I wish....I wish for something exciting.’ She made her wish in her mind and took a big breath to blow the candles out. The flames flickered and finally went out. Cheers were made and the cake was served.
“Here sweety. We didn’t know what to get you.” Her father handed her an envelope. Inside was a birthday card and a $40 bill. “Cool!” She said happily and gave her parents a big hug. “We love you!” They said just before the hug ended. “I love you too!”
After awhile the cake was gone and only a couple of chips were left in the bag or French Onion chips. Everyone was full. “Mom, dad, can I go for a walk into town? Please!” The girl begged holding her hands together hoping they say yes. Her parents looked at each other. “Oh why not honey? She’s eighteen now and it’s her birthday.” the man said to his wife. “Oh ok. Just be careful! Take your cell phone and DON’T talk to any strangers!” the woman said worried. “Yes mother. Thank you!” She said happily and ran out the door.

Making it into town she seen a jewelry store and went in. “Wow!” She exclaimed looking at the crystal necklaces and bracelets. She pressed her face against the glass to a diamond necklace that was worth almost two thousand dollars. “Beautiful....” She smiled and went on to look at something else. “Can I help you?” Asked a voice behind her. She turned to face a slender, serious man with gelled hair. “Uh, no I was just looking around.” She said feeling guilty in the man’s presence. “Alright then. I’ll be at the counter if you need any assistance.” he said heading back to the counter. “Ok, thank you.” She said. ‘I should get out of here, I can’t afford any of this.’ she thought as she headed for the door.
Before exiting she heard someone arguing. Looking back at the counter she seen a young lady yell at the slender, serious man with gelled hair. “Sorry, miss. I don’t know what you are talking about. This is a Jeweler. We only sell the finest of jewels. Your bracelet that you speak of does not have any gems or value that would be found here.” He told her in a business-like tone. “Heh, no value you say? Dear man, this bracelet has more value then your small mind will ever know. It’s one of a kind and posses great wonders.” The lady replied back. Her voice was light as an angels voice. The lady took a glance back at the girl, giving her a curious look. Then the look turned into a smile. After another word she left the Jewelers.
The girl watched her leave, wondering about the look she gave her. After leaving the Jewelers herself she looked around for the mysterious lady. The lady had worn a light blue slender dress. The dress’s strap was over one shoulder and seemed be ripped on the right sleeve. Her hair was curled in spirals down her back and was a vibrant black color that shined in the light. Her eyes was a weird color. Half of the pupil was green and the other was blue. “Contacts Probably...” The girl concluded as she thought logically. She still looked for the strange lady but she was nowhere in sight.
“I’ll save my money for another shopping spree. Nothing new is in.” She said heading back home. Passing the woods, she stopped. A faint blue shape passed by her eyes in the woods. “Huh?” Curiosity made her head into the woods to follow. The shape was somebody heading fast into the woods. She couldn’t get a look at this person due to the speed they were heading. It was all a blur. Hiding behind trees she tried keeping up. Finally the figure stopped. It was the lady in the blue dress. Her back was facing the girl and her face was looking up at the sky.
The lady turned around and the girl hid behind the tree. A small laugh left the lady’s mouth. “Come out child. Your fate awaits.” She said her voice echoing in the girl’s ears. Then without warning the lady vanished in a pale smoke. “What the hell?” The girl said searching for the lady. “Where did she go? Disappeared? No way!” The girl looked around and seen nothing. “Must have been seeing things. Imagination got away from me....I guess.” Letting out a sigh the girl looked down. “Huh? What’s this?” she asked aloud as she bent over to pick something off the ground. The object was a bracelet.
It was a silver chain with a vivid blue ribbon twirled through the chains in a cross pattern. The chain was sparkling and the ribbon was glittering like the stars of night. “Wow! It’s so beautiful!!” she said amazed at the bracelet she held in her hand. “That woman....did she drop this? But she just disappeared....literally.” The girl thought what she should do. “Maybe the shop guy in the jewelry store know what to do.” She stated as she returned to the store.
“Just my luck...” she let out sarcastically as she noticed the store was closed. “It’s only mid-day! And I wasn’t gone that long....was I?” With another sigh she headed home with the bracelet in hand.

“Mom, dad look what I found!” She yelled as she closed the door behind her and heading into the kitchen. She found her parents in the living room watching TV. “Look at this! I found it!” She said handing the bracelet to them. “Wow! Sweety that’s pretty!” Her mother said handing the bracelet back to her. “Where did you find it?” her dad asked her. “Uh...on the ground on the way home.” She answered leaving out the lady in the blue dress and the woods. “Ok sweety.”
The girl heading back into her room. “Probably imagined it....No one really vanishes like that.” She said herself still trying to figure out what she saw. She twirled the bracelet between her fingers. She then unhooked the chain and then re-attached it around her right wrist. Shaking her wrist she seen that it fit her. “So pretty....my favorite color too!” She was smiling. ‘A good birthday.’ She closed her eyes and drifted to sleep.

Hours passed and dusk was near. The girl was still asleep, but her dreams were filled with nightmares. Tossing and turning she fought in her dreams. “Let me go! Who are you! NO!” she yelled in her sleep. With a jerk she screamed awake. “Just a...nightmare...” She breathed getting control of her breathing. “A horrible nightmare....” She got up from her bed and turned the end-table lamp on. “Dark already? It’s only seven thirty.” She made a curious face as to figure out the early darkness. Pushing it through her mind she headed for her bedroom door.
“Dad? Mom?” She called as she entered the kitchen. “Hold on sweety!” She heard her dad call from the door hallway. “Who is it honey?” She heard her mother’s voice ask her father. “Just checking.” he answered. The girl walked into the kitchen and peeked around the hall to see who was at the door.
As her father turned the knob, a weird feeling came over the girl. Something wasn’t right, her mind spoke. The knob clicked and opened, creaked the door. The feeling grew. Something evil. Something shouldn’t be let in. She tried to call out. Her voice was trapped. The feeling grew and pressed down on her. The door was now wide open. “How may I-“ her father’s voice was cut off by his scream. The stranger cut the father’s throat with just his hands.
Before her mother had time to scream and run to protect her daughter, the stranger was facing her, grinning as he cut her throat as he done her husband. The girl couldn’t move, she was paralyzed by her own fear. Her eyes stared at the stranger.
He was tall, around six feet. He had snow white hair that lay down his shoulders and he wore a black wizard cloak. His eyes was what the girl was staring at. His eyes a eerie yellow that seemed to glow. The stranger smiled a evil smile as he held up a rod. The rod was black and had a silver skull on the end. He raised the rod above his head, as toward the sky. Then he took a quick look at the girl. “You...the bracelet” His voice was cold. Colder than ice. Still the girl couldn’t react, she only could watch in absolute fear.
The stranger looked up at the skull rod and smiled broadly as he spoke. It was a language that never was spoken, a language that sent shivers up the girl’s spine. “Oblivion Hell! Send these souls not to the afterlife but in oblivion chaos to be forever trapped in their own pain and agony!!” He shouted as the skull’s eyes began to bleed from the sockets and a strange, evil aura surrounded himself and the rod.
Lightning struck the house and everything became dark quicker than a blink of an eye. The bodies of her parents were gone and she remained laying face down on the hard tile floor. The stranger disappeared with the lightning. Only his ominous laughter remained echoing where he once stood. The only light was from the mysterious bracelet that glowed a pale blue tint, around the girl’s wrist.
Hours passed before the girl awoke. ‘Nnnh...what happened?’ she asked as she opened her blue eyes. The lights were still off and it seemed quiet. She raised up but fell back down. ‘What the hell?’ she asked. ‘Huh? My voice, why can’t I speak?’ she asked in her mind. She opened her mouth but only a barking sound came out. Looking down she saw paws. ‘Paws?’ she wondered and tried moving her hand, but only to raise one of the paws. Fear overwhelmed her again. ‘What’s going on? Why can’t I talk? What happened?’ she began to freak. She moved her head to her back and noticed a long bushy wolf tail. She tried moving but again she fell. ‘I have four legs....’ She tried a third time and succeeded. Making her way to her parent’s bedroom she found their full-length mirror.
She screamed but it came out as a howl. A wolf’s howl. In front of her in the mirror wasn’t her human self but a silver fur timber wolf. Dark Silver fur was down her back, her sides, tail and head. A whitish silver was on her underbelly, legs and her neck to her under chin. Her paws and ankles were a variety of dark and light fur combined. On her right ankle was the bracelet. Her blue eyes stared directly into the blue eyes of her wolf self. She let out a whimper. ‘A nightmare...just a nightmare....has to be!’ she cried.

The girl found out that this was no dream but a horrible reality as she spent three lonely months surviving in the empty household. She spend days searching for her family, but they were gone. She would cry herself to sleep every night, waiting for this nightmare to end. It never did. A feeling in her soul told her that her family was gone. Never to return. Still the question remained. Why? Why did this happen? What caused this? Questions asked over and over in her mind. She couldn’t find an answer. Even after the new family moved in. She gave up. Gave up on answering the questions. Barely gave up on life. Her life, her name and who she was died that day. The day of her 18th birthday.
