Chapter 14- Sitting Ducks

I was sitting on the ground next to Lin, humming a tune. This was the sixth day that he was staying here with us. He was mostly fully recovered, but one thought made me uneasy about him staying here.

What if they came searching for him?

I stayed up most of the night watching Lin, not being able to sleep from this thought. I wasn't sure if it was particularly good or bad, but I had a feeling it'd end badly if it were to come true. I'm not sure if Maya had thought of this, or even Lin, for that matter, but I didn't want to be the one to bring it up. My eyes had slight bags under them, but it was pretty much unnoticeable. I sighed and put my head on the side of Lin's bed, closing my eyes. At least Maya accepted him more now. I stopped humming, drifting off into my thoughts.

"Are you okay?" Lin asked, while stroking my head.

"Yeah.. Just a bit sleepy" I replied through my yawns. He gave a small laugh.

"You should watch me less during the night, and sleep more." my face heated up, and he gave me a small kiss on my head. Okay.. so he wasn't actually sleeping...

"hehe..."I gave a small giggle, and smiled.

I heard Maya make some rice in the main room. She was probably too tired to make anything else. Maya came into the room, and handed me and Lin a bowl.

"Thanks Maya" I replied, giving her a smile.

She gave me a nod, and walked out again. Maybe she felt awkward.. I placed another spoonful of rice into my mouth. Maya really is the best cook. I gave another high pitch sneeze, and Lin looked at me worriedly.

"Candace.. go change your clothing" Lin commanded me.

"Yes sir!" I replied, mocking him, and marched out of the room.

I went to the bedroom, and looked at my blood stained clothing. So much for my favorite set of clothing. I sighed and took out another dress, that looked the same as the wet one I had now, and I changed into it. In most of the villages that I lived with, they thought that it was really strange how I wore the same clothing everyday, but it was like second nature to me. It also helped me in the mornings, because I didn't have to worry about what I was going to wear that day. I placed my wet dress onto the railing next to my other set of clothing, and I heard a clatter of a spoon. I paused, but I hurriedly walked to where her and Jason was, and I stared at them.

"Is everything okay?" I asked them. They nodded in unison. They were so cute.

Did I interrupt something? I asked Maya. It looked like I had just killed the mood for them.

"Just go back to Lin!"Maya called back to me, and I couldn't help but give a smirk. I ran back to the guest room, almost tripping over my dress. Lin raised an eyebrow at me, but I smiled and walked next to him. I got to his side, smiling. He kept the weird-looking face, but I just smiled at him, sitting back down on the floor.

"Hey Lin.. I was wondering something.."

"Hmm?" he replied, finishing off his rice

".. Why don't you make fun of my hair?" I looked at the ground, and curled my finger in my right curl. I looked back at his face, and he had a deep frown. This made me frown a bit.

"Do you want me to make fun of it?" He asked, focusing on my face. I shook my head rapidly, giving a definite no, and he gave a small laugh. He took the curl I was playing with, and started running his hands though it, as if he was brushing it.

"I mean.. everyone else I've met has made fun of my hair.." I gave a sigh, and thought about all the other girls and a few boys who've made fun of the color.

"..I think your hair is beautifully unique. They were probably jealous of the color you have." he replied, stroking my head.

I gave a slow nod, looking at the ground again, my face burning up. I shot my head up, and Lin looked taken aback. I felt another presence in our home. I wasn't one hundred percent sure, but I had a feeling it was the wizard. Maya came storming in with Jason, and Lin and I looked at them shocked.

"Maya?" I looked at her, worried.

"The wizard's here again." she confirmed to me

I could feel the anger bubbling to my face. He wasn't going to get away again. I stood up, and took a slight step on the ground

"We won't miss this time." I almost growled, and was about to take a step, when Lin grabbed my arm. I turned around to face him

"Wait!" he cried to us

We all looked at him with puzzeled expressions.

"Not only is the wizard powerful, but he's-"

"We can beat him." Jason scoffed. I innerly laughed at that. He was pretty strong..

"No! No you don't understand he's your-" He was cut off again, as we all turned around, and saw that the wizard was in the middle of the room. I carefully pulled my arm away from Lin, and Maya brought out her ice spear, and I walked next to hear, deciding which animal to change into. I suddenly lost my thought, as I got stuck in the middle of my step. It took me a bit to get what was happening, but I suddenly realized that time had stopped, and neither one of us could move, besides the wizard. He didn't laugh or smirk at us, but just stood there.

We were pretty much sitting ducks now.
