Johnny says in the prologue that he doesn't want us to like him. The honesty of that and of this film fascinated me. It wasn't about nice people or situations. It's talking about a kind of truth and not a pretty one. This doesn't bother me. It was a stunning piece of Art, raw and dark, well acted and scripted. I admit, the camera work was a little distracting. They made things grainy and in at least one scene, the focus shifts made me a bit queasy. It was definitely worth seeing, but go expecting to be challenged, not entertained. This is not a film for the week of stomach either. I love that Depp was willing to play something like this; to let us see him in this light. I love that the love interest female was ordinary looking. This film will make no money, I think, so if you are going, go soon.
It was odd being completely alone in the theater, but lucky, since the SID was pretty high today and I found myself humming to myself at one point. I'm not sure how long I was doing it, since it was a symptom of my complete absorption in the action.
