It was playing at the cheap theater so I went.
I haven't read the book on this one, but I'm guessing a lot of the problems with this film originate with it. I went for the snarky humor I was hoping it would be in it. On the plus side, there was snarky humor, so that part was reasonably satisfying. The problem was that this was highly derivative of Fight Club. Yes, I know this is based on a Chuck Palachuck, but when I read Lullaby I didn't get the recycled idea feeling I got here. Watching this, I kept hearing Edward Norton reading the main character's lines in my head and throughout I kept getting the feeling that this was more an alternative time line for that other book. What if "Jack" became a sex addict instead of... well all the stuff that happened in Fight Club. In point of fact, the sex addict version of "Jack" is vastly less interesting, and his adventures are pretty banal. It's a shame because there was some good material tucked in there and and Angelica Huston was charming. I'm not saying it's horrible or not worth seeing, but I am saying that its essentially a nonessential appendix to Fight Club.
