Being home had never felt so good, for the sun had bothered me intensely. The darkness of my room cooled this burning sensation from the outside world. Our house isn’t exactly a house, but what humans would call a “mansion.” We have no need for it, but we thought we might’ve fit in better. Too bad for us, most of the humans in this area live in smaller homes. They always jump to awkward conclusions. “Oh, they don’t like to have friends,” or “They think they’re too wealthy to socialize.” If they only knew the trouble we go through.
“Skyler, what are you doing by yourself?” Mary asks.
“Nothing Mary dear, just drifting off and drowning in my thoughts,” I respond.
“Well, Erik said mean things to me. Big brother dear, please say something to him.”
“I will Mary, now go be a child and play with your dolls. I added new ones to your collection. I hope you are pleased with them.”
“Thank you, Sky.” A wide grin quickly spread across her face as she skips over toward her bedroom.
Her childish actions are cery amusing to me, so I treat her as best I can so she may embrace her toddler habits as long as she can. Such a darling she is.
I ease off of the chair in which I’d sat clumsily for the longest time. I give a loud knock on Erik’s door down the hall.
“Erik, please come out ASAP,” I was amused at the human language I’ve grown accustomed to.
“What do you want, Samuel?” asked Erik, the tall seemingly seventeen year old drowned in his blaring speakers, closing his door abruptly.
“What are you doing in your room? Are you busy?”
“No just reading silly human comics. The campire ones are attrociously unaccurate.”
“I see. What is this about you saying mean things to little Mary?”
“I said nothing. She was knocking on my door asking me to play dolls with her and she got upset after me calling her a couple names. You know, she needs to grow up sooner or later.”
“Erik,” I mumbled with sorrow, “Please treat her with a little more kindness. She’s only a child.”
“Whatever you say man, but teach her a thing or two of handling things people say to her. She’s gonna have to learn.”
“That I’ll do Erik, when the time is right.” I walk away toward the door, glaring outside the window at two teenage girls laughing and playing. I listen intently, hoping to get any information.
“You know that Jasmine girl that lives a few blocks away?” the blonde girl said. The brown haired girl replied with a nod.
“Yeah well, I saw someone walkin’ around her house. I wanted to do something, but the person was gone in a flash. Then, she finally came downstairs and checked the house. It looked as if nobody was there.”
“You need to stop, Jennifer” began the brown haired girl, “That girl is nothing but a freak. If you even think about hangin’ our with her, you’ll be one too.”
“Whatever Brittany, but I saw the person walk out of the back. It looked like that boy we never see, in that bouse over there.” She pointed toward my house and both girls glanced over here. I hid behind the curtain hoping they wouldn’t notice, and they didn’t. The continue walking and I crouch down against the wall below the sill of the window. Great! They know it was me. Now I have to play it cool. Whatever they say, it wasn’t…
“Wat’cha doin’?” Mary asks. I quickly turn my head and stare at her. “…well?”
“Oh Mary, I swear you gave me a heart attack.”
“Erik told me we have no heart. Is that true?” Mary’s eyes were full of curiosity. My response is this. “No Mary, we do. You’ll understand when you get older.”
“Whatever you say brother, but do you promise to tell me when I get older? When you think I’m ready?”
“Of course I will little Mary, but for now there’s nothing you need to worry about, but I promise.” I pinky swear with her, those small fingers, and she skips off down the hall and up the stairs. That little girl is special to me. Her pale skin, those beautiful gray eyes, her long golden hair. She reminds me of my real sister, the part of the family I left, the only part I loved.
I had a real family, but they weren’t good people. My father was abusive, dangerous. My mother couldn’t help, or she would be hurt too. He beat my sister, Abigail, worse and worse every day. One day, I couldn’t take if. Late at night, I told little Abigail to run, run away as far as you can and never come back. I was ten years old, and my life mewnt nothing to me if she could be free. I loved her more than life itself. She did what I told her, and daddy found me. He bear me until I could no longer walk. I layed in bed one day, and a shadow came. This shadow formed into a person and touched me. I didn’t know what he did, for I was too weak, but the next few days, I felt pain, all over my body. Eventually, felt cold. I looked different, and my parents kicked me out of the house. I walk down the street with the few items I had – pants, shirt, and bread – and next thing I know, Erik comes around with a really nice car saying, “Come with me.”
Ever since that day, I’ve lived with him. He’d taought me some really cool tricks, and told me the whole story. I can hold my breath for the longest time, hours, and run extremely fast. The burden we must face is our hunger. Blood is such a necessity for us. The smell of it aches me, buit we have to learn to resist. If we happened to snap into our demonic phase, as I call it, then our secret is pointless to keep, and we’d have to move our hiding place. Nobody must know about us. One thing that triggers my thoughts, is that girl. Once a long time ago, I saw a picture of a person named Quianna. There was a person I went to, a fellow vampire from a nearby town rather, told me this person has a strong connection with me. That they have in the past, and will in the near future, but could it be…her? I never expected her to be so, tasty. No! I can’t. We will be nice, I’ll find out who she is, and go on with life as if I never met her. No matter, I will find out who that girl is.
