Time For a Revolution
It was turned into a routine. There were a couple weeks left until finals were supposed to actually happen and Kuhn was determined to get Ariana's help every day while her mother was determined that her daughter rebuild the faded friendship that the two of them had unconsciously slipped into.
Right now they were on the end of week two, the big wrap up period. All Ariana could think about was how she was glad that once they had moved study time to her house that Kuhn was actually making progress and really didn't need this recap session they had been doing for the past hour. Well, that and how completely bored it was making her. Relax and suck it up. You could use it too. That's what she kept telling herself in her mind, well between the mental groans that is.
Then, as if answering her prayers, Kuhn lightly placed his pencil down on the table. "This is so boring. Can't we go do something else?"
Immediately Ariana relaxed and a smile actually came to her lips. The concept of actually doing something else was beautiful. She hadn't even realized how much she was in love with the idea until he had actually said it out loud. "Like what?"
"I don't know. Anything. Just not this," he replied, putting them into quite the situation. At least that's what Ariana thought; apparently not Kuhn though. He stood right up and grabbed her hand to pull her out of her chair and she was actually glad to comply, not without a bit of a heat rush to her cheeks though. What the…? Am I blushing?!
No time for her to think about that now, though. In the blink of an eye they were away from the beauty of the rural riches and back into the quiet little town that she was so proud to be a part of. She had to admit, she had always been grateful that her parents weren't really city-type people.
Just on the outskirts of town was where Kuhn decided to take their first stop of the evening. Ariana gave no complaint to Big Rick's Hots when they stopped. Even greasy, you-don't-want-to-know-what-they're-made-of hotdogs were better than studying world history any more (which was the subject they had moved on to after chemistry, algebra, and Spanish).
Kuhn, who had ripped the poor girl away from her house, was forced to pay under the blame of him making her forget her purse at home. It wasn't at all of a big deal, though. See, Ariana isn't the only rich one around these parts. How do you think they had known each other for so long? Their father's only founded the Aliver cell phone company, the most reliable cell phones for the most reliable networks, as the slogan went.
Sitting down to eat their rather alive-looking hotdogs, Ariana was about to dig in, eating with her eyes closed of course, when Kuhn spoke up to start small chat again. "Now isn't this better than any stupid book of yours?" His tone caught her off guard. Was he calling her…a loser?
"I hope you know that I'm not a complete book nerd just because I study like a good student does. I do sports, you know I do. Not to mention hang out with friends, not including all the dates I've been on lately." Okay, so she came out a little more defensive than she had meant to, but he should understand. She had always been like this and the years sure hadn't changed much of the girl.
He waved a hand as if brushing it off like it was nothing. It probably was just that, nothing. "Yeah, yeah, yeah. Me, of all people, should know that. I mean, really. How long have we known each other? Since we were, what? Five?" Wrong. Ariana knew that they had known each other since they were three, but what does it matter now that they were sixteen? That was such a long time ago. And besides, Kuhn had never been the best in the memory department. "What are we doing after this anyway?"
First with his book comment and now with more things to do together? Ariana looked at her watch and it was already past the time they usually stopped studying and he wanted to hang out more? Strange, seeing as they hadn't really hung out on their own since middle school, but she couldn't really see herself fighting the idea of doing something else either. "We could catch a movie or something," she suggested with a shrug, trying to make it sound nothing whatsoever like a date. That was the last thing she needed, Kuhn to think she liked him. He would never let her live it down. It'd only be worse for her since it wasn't true.
To her surprise, Kuhn gave an indifferent "sure" while finishing off the rest of his hotdog that he had cleaned up in record time. If you had ever seen the food they served at Big Rick's Hots, you would be both amazed and disgusted at the same time. Well, either way Ariana lost her appetite, which meant it was time for the movie that much sooner.
So after the idiot suggestion provided by Kuhn of going to see the newest horror movie on the big screen, they had bought tickets and sat through what was brilliance on film reel to him and an hour and forty minutes of pure torture for Ariana. Her mind was racing with all the angry remarks she wanted to whip at him as they walked out of the theater, but none of them would just surface to her lips, keeping her silent.
"The whole movie you were clinging to my arm like a little girl," he said the instant they walked out of the theater and on their way in the direction of Ariana's house. "You were so scared. Watching you might have even been more worth the seven bucks than the actual movie." Then came the laughter. It wasn't too insulting, for a normal person at least. Little, hothead Ariana, on the other hand…
"It isn't funny! I don't get why you want to see that garbage anyway. You know how much I hate the site of blood," she said, starting to blush at the mention of squeezing his arm with her tiny death grip what apparently was the whole time. She had thought it was just at the worst parts but nope. The whole hour and forty minutes start to finish.
Still, the laughter didn't stop and the teasing continued. "Sure it is. Now you want me to walk you home so you don't get scared or anything?" He continued to laugh a bit smugly to himself, but he toned it down from the already mild state.
Ariana folded her arms across her chest and turned her head to the side so Kuhn couldn't tell that she was completely lying. "Yes, I do want you to walk me home, but not because I'm scared. I'm going to need someone to save me from any perverts loose out there in the wild."
"Riiight," he said with a smirk, stopping the laughter and leaving it at that. Even if she did try to hide it, he could see right through to the tough act. It was something she was quite famous for, but only two people really knew it. He just so happened to be one of them.
Walks home are the perfect thing to clear your mind, and especially in the quiet of the night. Children are all home asleep, cool air keeping you awake so that you can enjoy the beauty of the starlight bringing everything around you a new life than what the sunshine provides. You can clear all your thoughts and let your mind run free. Unfortunately, it can make it all that much easier for your imagination to run away with you too.
When the two reached the doorstep of Ariana's home, Kuhn leaned in. Something he always did, but something she never noticed before. And now that it was discovered, the first thing that her mind raced to was kissing, especially when their noses were almost touching and his unusually soft brown eyes were looking deep into her own. Was he going to kiss her?
She could feel it as the blood began to pound in her cheeks, her face growing hot as she got lost in that gaze. Not that she noticed. She couldn't even tell what was going on around her, and the parts she could she didn't believe. Her heart was pounding in her throat as she wondered what was going on and why wasn't she shoving him away.
The moment his lips parted, she took in a sharp breath, but instantly relaxed. Surprising, to say the least. He was still not even an inch away from her face and she felt as if everything was perfect in the world. Up until he spoke, that is. "See you," he said, practically floating off of the step he had been standing on below her. Ariana just stared, but nothing in front of her was in focus. The image of Kuhn that close to her was printed to her mind like it was still there, still happening.
When she came to, he was already gone and she was alone.
