My surgery is scheduled for Tuesday April 24th. My husband was told he was going to lose his job on May 7th, his contract was not renewed at the school he is at... but he has been having problems with pain in his feet so I convinced him to finally go to the doctor about it before his job ended. The doctor said it was so bad he would have to have immediate surgery so they have him scheduled for April 26th, just 2 days after me, before I'm even mobile yet. They are doing surgery on the worst foot first, and it will take 8 weeks before he can walk on it somewhat normally, then they are going to operate on his other foot and that will take another 8 weeks... so no work for him for 16 weeks. I'll probably be off work 8-12 weeks. Thankfully most of the house is on one level.... the kids are going to have to all the running around for us.. Thankful Nehru got his driver's license 2 weeks ago. He will get to do most of the shopping and cooking of supper for a while. He works a day job from 11 to 5 Monday - Friday, then varied hours over the weekend to get him up to to his 40 hr work week. Life is about to get very challenging for us around here.

Well I think it is time for an update.. lots has happened lately and I hope to fill that in later, but for right now, this is what I am facing. Today, Tuesday November 29th, I'm having a stint put in my lower spine to help with the pain of 3 bulging disks that have flared up, in addition to that, I had a mammogram the day before Thanksgiving and they read it Monday morning.. It is so serious that I am going in for a biopsy on Friday and this next Tuesday I"m scheduled for a colonoscopy so within a course of 1 week (7 days) I will be admitted to the hospital and put under 3 seperate times. sad crying

Hello and goodnight, I hope I can take a nap today, but my mom is on a rampage... she wants every window in the house cleaned inside and out, so eventhough my muscle in my back is torn and I'm on workman's comp, I'm to climb on a ladder and washed each window by hand... sad My mom claims that when she hurt her back at work back in the day, that the doctors all told her that the only way her back would get better is by going back to work right away... she doesn't understand why I'm on restricted duty and that I'm not to use my left arm.

My dad had a setback tuesday evening, thankfully it was a small one and we caught it soon enough so that it didn't end up being major. But about 2 1/2 hours after he ate, he vomited, and it got into his lungs. He started to get pneumonia, but by my staying there all night, suctioning everytime he coughed, we beat it and he didn't get worse, he didn't get a fever, and he didn't lose ground in therapy. Looks like he might get to come home next tuesday, but he will still need 24/7 nursing care. Since his insurance won't cover it, guess who is going to be doing it.

Well they were unsuccessful with the nasal feeding tube, after much diliberation, (especially since his condition got worse) we finally decided to let the doctors operate and put in a feeding tube through his belly button and feed him that way and see how it goes.
By this time he had been without food for5 days and was in the process of starving to death. We had a few family disagreements regarding if doing the surgery to put in the stomach feeding tube was considered extraordinary measures or not. I didn't feel it was, but my mother did. Two siblings felt it was going to far to try and keep him alive, and the last one agreed with me... so it was a long discussion and thankfully we got everyone to sort of agree to give my side a try.
At least if it didn't work or didn't help, we could discontinue feedings like they did for the gal in Florida. So they scheduled the surgery, and due to complications he was unable to take any feedings through it for another 24 hours... and once they did, he kept having problems, but we kept trying. I was staying at the hospital 18 to 20 hours a day, to make sure his needs were being taken care of ... that he was getting pain meds as needed, that they kept the surgerical site clean and free from infection.
The first 24 hours he was only able to tolerate 2 oz of feeding stuff. That evening the tech's came to take him for more tests, and they unfortunately kept him laying flat on his back eventhough they were told not to. I had left the hospital and my mom took over and no one was in the room when he got back and the tech's didn't notify the nurses that he was back, so he was left on his back. So the feeding stuff came up his esophogus and he asperated (it went into his lungs) and he couldn't cough it out due to being paralyzed.
He ended up getting pneumonia and my mom didn't want it treated, because antibiotics were extra ordinary measures, so we were only allowed to treat the fever with tylenol. So I got the nurse to hook up the suction system.... and every time some of the stuff would come out into the bottom of his throat, I would stick the tubing down his throat and kept sucking it up... and we managed to beat the pneumonia the old fashioned way.
He finally started tolerating more and more of the feeding..and he started therapy. To make a long story short, after lots of work in the last 7 days since he got his feeding tube put in.... he can now eat soft foods, (but he is still having to get tube feedings at night)... He can walk the length of the parrallel bars at physical therapy, he can pull himself up out of his wheelchair. He can also mostly dress himself already and is learning to talk. It will still be a long road to recovery, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

My dad is scheduled for surgery in less then 8 hours if his blood tests turn out okay, if not he will die within a few more days from lack of nutrition and fluids. He has now gone 4 days without anything.

Well my dad ended up having a massive stroke, unable to speak, the left side of his face drooping, weak left hand and arm, and neither leg works. He is unable to swallow liquids or food, so they had to put a feeding tube in him tonight. He is unable to sit up, push the call nurse button, or ask for help.
