Chapter 2

But Jim wasn’t dead. She was just in hiding. This 12-year-old girl was living in a box in an alley. She had had many challenges she faced: fighting rats, roaches, and many other pests that tried to invade her home. But she would always win the war.
It would seem impossible for a girl to live without money, and it probably is. Luckily, Jim saved up her allowance for so many years; it could last her months. She always used it if absolutely necessary. For example, if she got tired of the taste if rats and garbage, Jim could buy a dinner at Luigi’s, which happens to be the building the alley belongs to.
The box wasn’t that bad either. It was big enough to fit Jim’s whole body. She even had room to hold her favorite stuffed panda, Wilbur. “Home fit for a queen,” she told herself daily.
So you could say she had things going pretty well.

Chapter 1

“We’re moving?!” Jim Barkers screamed. Her parents were very calm. “Yes, your mother has been transferred to Austin, and we hope to make a new life there,” her father said. “What? How could you do this to me? I already endured being the new girl once and that went along with being laughed at for my boy name! And that was just a month ago!!! Why do we have to move again?? This is the 8th time! Don’t think I haven’t counted!” Jim was crying now. But before her parents could comfort her, she ran up the stairs and slammed her door shut.
Jim’s parents soon came in her room to find her missing! They searched the whole house to find but a note, reading:
I’m running away! Families stink! Don’t bother trying to find me because I won’t go back!

Your forgotten daughter,
Jiminy (Jim) Barkers

Jim’s mother was dialing 911 in a second. Her father was already out calling her name in the cold, dark night. They looked and looked with the police, but never found a trace. This went on for days, even months, but nothing was found. They had her face on milk cartons and newspapers, but Jim’s parents lost hope. Their only daughter was pronounced dead.
