Elven runes Vill-ya (veel-yah) is the rune representing the basic element Air and is a powerful and forceful influence. When Vill-ya appears focus on the most fundamental parts of the Self. Who you are, what you believe, what your history tells you, what you have learned, what you know and don’t know, what your senses tell you, what past experiences relate to the situation. In other words, be introspective, who you are, at your core, is either being reinforced or challenged and, therefore, you must be honest with yourself in your considerations. Air knows you more intimately than any other element and you cannot trick it or put it off, it knows you too well. Trust in the wisdom you have gained over time and use the power of your mind and soul to find the right path. --- Hena (Hee-na) is the royal Air rune representing the energies of the innocent child. When Hena appears it suggests that a simple view of the world is necessary to proceed effectively. The solitary line that symbolizes Hena represents the straight and focused path. Like a Child, ever curious and experiencing things alone and for the first time, avoid distractions that might alter your path and focus. A fresh view, one that isn’t being influenced by experience, is the approach you need to embrace. Approach the challenge with the unbiased curiosity and wonder any Child brings to experiencing something they have not seen, or do not know, yet desperately feel compelled to explore. This can mean putting aside fear, needing to touch, taste or feel the item in focus, or gingerly experimenting with it in some way…blowing on it, rattling it, shaking it, etc., in attempts to determine what it is, or what it does. Air has the ability to go all around and sometimes through things, experiencing an object from all sides when it appears on the path. So, too, should you be willing to fully explore the situation or challenge you face with the intent of understanding it in such an innocent and unbiased fashion. Hena also represents the idea of experiencing something for the first time and, therefore, is a critical first step on the path to learning, the beginning of developing the library of experience that will bring knowledge and, eventually, wisdom to the Self. Approaching things with erroneous preconceptions makes learning about those things more difficult, and that is the message Hena brings. Something new is to be learned here before moving further down the path. The appearance of Hena can also mean that a person possessing the qualities of the Child has entered your life, or is about to, in direct association with the challenge or issue you face. If such a person appears, pay attention to the focus they bring (or have already brought) to the situation as they may be here to help you see it more clearly, point out the item that needs a fresh look, or be the source of the challenge. The appearance of Hena can also be a powerful suggestion that you are currently in possession of the power of the Child, soon will be, or that embodying that energy is necessary to proceed effectively. ----- Randi’ (Raun-dee) is the royal Air rune representing the energies of the Wanderer or explorer. When Randi’ appears focus on the adventurous spirit within you to find the correct path. The crossroads that symbolize Randi’ represent the many unknown paths available to us in life. The Wanderer is in search of knowledge, and is eager to find the new places, experiences, and perspectives that can only be found by exploring these unknown paths. The Wanderer seeks these new things out rather than waiting for them to appear in the road by chance. The challenge you face requires that you search out knowledge and hold on to whatever it is that you find at the end of the path, or along the way. You must find the knowledge, it will not come to you. Like Air, the Wanderer is willing to go in whichever direction knowledge might be found, seeking it out and seeing it first hand. So, too, must you seek and find because the knowledge you need is not here, but is available if you are willing to go find it and make it your own. Randi’ represents the curiosity of the human spirit, the need to know more than what is obvious and already understood. It is the education of your life, the amassing of knowledge that, once obtained, leads to more knowledge and, eventually, wisdom. The Wanderer is the Child growing up, learning and thriving by adding complexity and dimensions to the body and soul. Armed with the fundamental knowledge of the Child, the spirit of the Wanderer can only be satisfied by better understanding the world. Seek and learn, amass the knowledge necessary to correctly choose the next path. The appearance of Randi’ can also mean that a person possessing the qualities of the Wanderer has entered your life, or is about to, in direct association with the challenge or issue you face. If such a person appears, pay attention to the focus they bring (or have already brought) to the situation as they may be here to help you see an overlooked path, help you choose a path with promise, or be the obstacle blocking a path. The appearance of Randi’ can also be a powerful suggestion that you are currently in possession of the power of the Wanderer, soon will be, or that embodying that energy is necessary to proceed effectively. --- Nolder is the royal Air rune representing the energies of the Sage. When Nolder appears focus on tapping the wisdom of experience to find the correct path. The crossroads pointing in each direction of the compass that symbolize Nolder represent the experience and knowledge gained by traveling the many paths of life. The Sage possesses the kind of complex knowledge and wisdom one can only gain from traveling down many roads during the course of a lifetime. The Sage has learned how to learn, how to seek knowledge, and now possesses the ability to combine that knowledge into something larger than the sum of the parts. The experience of the Sage can see where a path leads before it is embarked upon, can see when a path is becoming (or has become) dangerous, and has the intuition to determine a path with promise when confronted with the possibilities of many paths from which to choose. Like the Air, the Sage has many paths available to take to any destination and will often avoid troublesome paths in order to achieve reaching the end of the path safely, or to ensure the end of the journey is reached. When necessary, the Sage can take even troublesome paths and overcome the obstacles presented by virtue of the experience gained from confronting similar obstacles on previous paths. The Sage accomplishes much by carefully looking for, and understanding, the context within which any path lies, for it is the context of the situation, the nuances on the road, the items presented along the way, from which the Sage develops actions. The Sage is unsurpassed in reading the signs of success and danger and is a clever and resourceful strategist. We all hope to attain the level of wisdom found in the Sage but often come up short because we allow something other than our knowledge (and what is definitely known) to be influenced by the desire to see things as we want them to be, rather than acknowledging them for what they are. See clearly, remember truthfully, and apply your knowledge to find the correct path. The appearance of Nolder can also mean that a person possessing the qualities of the Sage has entered your life, or is about to, in direct association with the challenge or issue you face. If such a person appears, pay attention to the focus they bring (or have already brought) to the situation as they may be here to help you better understand the paths you must choose from, help you choose a safe path, or be hiding a path from your view. The appearance of Nolder can also be a powerful suggestion that the you are currently in possession of the power of the Sage, soon will be, or that embodying that energy is necessary to proceed effectively. ---- Kerim (keh-reem) is the symbolic rune representing strength. There is significant strength behind the current situation to achieve a satisfying result. Not only is there strength, but that strength is in full view and should be recognized, or is already being recognized, for what it is. Kerim could mean that strength needs to be asserted, recognized, defended against, even overcome. Regardless, the issue or situation has weight behind it that will overcome and resist simple (feeble) efforts to block it. You possess a position of strength in the situation and those strengths should be sufficient to provide a good result. If you are clear on what strengths you possess, and apply them, your efforts will find success. The correct path finds the wind at your back. *Kerim (keh-reem) is the symbolic rune representing strength. There is currently sufficient strength available to successfully address the task or situation. In reverse, Kerim indicates that strength must be drawn from the situation rather than applied to it. This suggests that the strengths necessary to address the situation are not in full view, though their presence is undeniable. Therefore, when discovered, these strengths, might be underestimated or not recognized for what they are by others. You currently have a heightened ability to develop strength in a situation and should take advantage of this skill while you possess it. You need to discover where the strength within the situation lies (from another, from a tool, from the environment, etc.), and direct it effectively, before a good result can be achieved. The correct path is not the obvious path. --- Nint-ta (neen-tah) is the symbolic rune representing reflection. Reflective energies are required to address the task or situation. The reflection may be a simple mirror and resemble something from your past, which would indicate that this situation might be addressed in a manner similar to another (strategy, perspective, caution, assertiveness, etc.). If this is the case, you must fully consider and understand the situation, paying close attention to the details and context within which the issue lies. Should your understanding be incomplete the full reflection may be misinterpreted and action taken with this poor perspective will likely end in an unsatisfactory result. Reflection may also mean you need to look deeply within the Self to gain the proper perspective to achieve a successful result. If this is the case, the situation is likely quite complex and demands careful and complete analysis…anything less will result in failure. In either case, fully reflecting on any situation, or on the Self, requires time, focus, and an uncompromising willingness to accept the truth. Reflect until the truth emerges, only then will a positive result be possible. Do not take the path until you know where it leads. ---- Charasil (kar-uh-seel) is the symbolic rune representing truth. The truth has emerged or is emerging, move towards it to achieve success or before continuing down the path. The momentum of the situation has placed the truth in front of you and it is now time for you to follow that truth. If you cannot yet see it, stay alert for it will appear soon and you must be ready to embrace it. If you are currently focused on the path, examine the path to find the truth; if you are currently focused on the Self, look within to find the truth; if you are currently focused on the world, look at the environment to find the truth; if you are currently focused on another, look to them to find the truth. Knowing the truth can set you free, however, freedom is not always what you might expect. Finding and embracing the truth is necessary for your journey to continue. Find and follow the path truth presents. --- Minra (Meen-rah) is the symbolic rune representing a path. The correct path is currently available for the journey. The path to move forward is clear but might not be completely visible, or straightforward. Do not waste time or energy on developing a path, or creating a new path, because the correct path already exists and is ready to be taken. Heed the token and begin the journey now or continue on the current path, it is the correct one. The current path is a good path, so trust your moral compass. Minra is a powerful confirmation that you need not fear the path that lies directly ahead. If you cannot see the path, put aside your fears, it lies directly at your feet, and will deliver you to the destination you desire. You are traveling the correct path. ---- Kalassay (cal-oss-say) is the symbolic rune representing clarity. The Self is aligned, its energies stored, and its resolve pure. You are in a heightened state of awareness that is pushing aside the noise of the environment, leaving you unusually able to see and understand all that is around you. Your mind is clear, so pay special attention to all that it perceives. If you perceive a situation in any way, the situation is as you perceive it, so do not hesitate to trust your instincts about the situation, or the path. Feel comfortable speaking your thoughts, sharing your views, or explaining your conclusions because you will bring great insight to any situation at this time. Clarity is a gift of the Self, though often fleeting, and knowing this it should be embraced while you possess it. Clarity often appears when you least expect it so do not ignore what it tells you when it appears on the path. Use the time you have with clarity wisely and learn what you can while it walks the path with you. ---- Godan (go-dahn) is the symbolic rune representing the end. With few exceptions, all things begin and end. Godan is the rune that brings finality to each path in life, but it also brings the promise of a new beginning. When Godan appears you can be certain that some path has been traveled to its conclusion. Godam is sometimes associated with mourning, sometimes with celebration, but always with some mix of emotions that you must accept and incorporate into your reflections of the path just traveled and the implications on your choices for the next path. Godan is merely is a token of finality, and should not be interpreted as anything more than that. The simple line which separates the Godan rune into two parts leaves no room for interpretation, there are two parts, separate from each other, the past and the future are no longer connected on this path. The path has ended, look for a new path. ---- Naer (na-ear) is the rune representing the basic element Fire and is a powerful and forceful influence. When Naer appears focus on the personal power of the Self. What you see as changing or in need of change should be the focus of the situation you are addressing. When Naer appears your personal power and/or convictions are being tested and the test is one of your strength, will, and character, so you must gather these fundamental elements of the Self and create a new path, or transform the one being presented to you. Approach any obstacles with conviction and the strength of your will by addressing the challenges presented without fear, transforming the very nature of the blockage, even destroying the obstacles, if necessary. Do not shy away from the challenge presented, instead, gather the power of the Self then impose it on the situation, it is the only choice. Tests of your character, such as those suggested when Naer appears, require answering with an uncompromising sense of the Self in a way that is strong enough and wise enough to choose the right course if it is available, changing it if it is flawed, or creating a new one if necessary…and this must be accomplished without compromising who you are or what you believe. To find the correct path, know thy Self, be true to thy Self, and engage thy Self.
When Naer (na-ear) appears in reversal it indicates that you may not yet have gathered enough personal power to proceed effectively. The situation you face may directly challenge your convictions and/or power, and require a response, but the time is not yet ripe to proceed, The jumpy and passionate nature of Fire suggests to you that an answer is necessary, and the battle must be drawn, but it is not yet time. Consider the environment of the situation and determine what is influencing the primary challenge and, therefore, must be addressed first. In other words, what do you need to change, transform, or eliminate in the environment before the strength of your will and Self can proceed with conviction? Consider other runes in your cast since one of the most potent weapons of Fire is the ability to transform the other elements. Other Fire related runes in the cast will likely provide focus, while Air, Water, and Earth runes may suggest the element most in need of transforming. Naer in reverse suggests more the preparation for the coming battle than the battle itself. Once the preparation is complete you will have gathered the personal power and circumstances required to achieve your goal. Rushing to battle can create heroes that are remembered, planning battles creates champions that continue on the path. ---- Matar (mah-tahr) is the royal Fire rune representing the energies of the Warrior. When Matar appears focus on your convictions to find the correct path. The simple, yet somehow intimidating shape that symbolizes Matar suggests the tip of the spear, the sharp edges of a sword, even the shape of a shield and represents the many forms of strength required to travel the paths of life. The Warrior is ready to assert power or stand firmly in defense of any challenge that presents itself. The Warrior is unbending in defending the good, unafraid to take on that which is evil. With furious conviction, the Warrior will defend the principles of good at all costs, and is uncompromising in vanquishing the enemies of what is right and correct. A black and white perspective dominates the Warrior’s desire to serve justice and the Warrior knows only two results: victory and defeat. Like Fire, the Warrior will overwhelm enemies until they are exhausted, destroy them completely if necessary. It is the unrelenting spirit of the Warrior and the conviction attached to that spirit, combined with sheer strength, that provides the Warrior with the power to overcome obstacles, challenges, and foes. Direct, swift, and unrelenting action characterize the offensive tactics of the Warrior, while unyielding stubbornness, deeply held beliefs, and loyalty to the protection of the good, define the defensive motivations of a Warrior with conviction. Combined with the strength and conviction inherent in the Warrior, the ability to swiftly see weakness and exploit it makes the Warrior a most fearful and cunning foe. The skills of the Warrior are many, and formidable when focused, but it is the conviction of the Warrior that lies at the heart of the power the Warrior possesses. The power of the Warrior is often an unnoticed and untapped force until a cause, a belief, or a higher good is threatened, it is then that the Warrior emerges to vanquish the foes of the cause. A Warrior needs a reason, and so armed, can be defeated only at a great cost to those in opposition. Attach yourself to that which is right and good to find the correct path. The appearance of Matar can also mean that a person possessing the qualities of the Warrior has entered your life, or is about to, in direct association with the challenge or issue you face. If such a person appears, pay attention to the principles they bring (or have already brought) to the situation as they may be here to help you focus on what is right, help strengthen your conviction, or be challenging your will. The appearance of Matar can also be a powerful suggestion that you are currently in possession of the power of the Warrior, soon will be, or that embodying that energy is necessary to proceed effectively.
When Matar appears in reversal it indicates that a lack of conviction is depriving you of the power and energy required to correctly address the challenge presented. Set aside thinking that confuses an issue, or acts to make it overly complex. What is right and good is often easy to know, and is often easily found by listening to your heart. Politics, double-meanings, and deception that can hide or distort what one believes must be confronted daily on the paths of life and often the easiest path is to compromise in order to make the way easier. The Warrior, however, does not compromise on what is right and good and neither should you when determining how to proceed. Take note of those things that have weakened your conviction and overcome them. Without conviction, the fight is already lost. To find the correct path, you must believe it is the correct path before taking it. The appearance of a reversed Matar can also mean that a person possessing qualities contrary to those of the Warrior has entered your life, or is about to, in direct association with the challenge or issue you face. If such a person appears, pay attention to the principles, or lack of principles, they bring (or have already brought) to the situation as they may be here to distract your focus on what is right, weaken your conviction, or be attacking your will. The appearance of Matar in reversal can also be a powerful suggestion that you are currently in great need to posses the power of the Warrior, soon will be, or that embodying that energy is necessary to proceed effectively. ---- Hicel (high-sul) is the royal Fire rune representing the energies of the Outlaw. When Hicel appears focus on change to find the correct path. The opposing points that symbolize Hicel represent the antithesis of symmetry, and discomfort with convention. Like the Warrior, the Outlaw is ready to assert power on a situation in order to come to a successful conclusion. In the Outlaw, however, the good is not a simple matter. Sometimes the good, left untended, becomes less than good and requires challenging and change in order to emerge as good again. The Outlaw, then, is not a black and white thinker, but one that can understand the differences between perceptions of what is right and what is actually right. Merely believing that the path is correct does not convince the Outlaw that the path is unquestionably correct. The Outlaw knows what is perceived as correct, but challenges it anyway when circumstances suggest what is correct is not also good. The Outlaw embraces change when change is required, promotes change in defiance of authority, and will relentlessly challenge conventional thoughts and deeds when they fall short of their intent. In many ways, the Outlaw’s willingness to challenge tradition and convention strengthens them by forcing the issue, forcing a defense of them when challenged. A difficult, often annoying, yet powerful force, the strength of will of the Outlaw is formidable. Despite the good often produced by the Outlaw, fear is often the effect the Outlaw has on those facing an Outlaw’s challenge. The fear of an Outlaw is derived from those who shudder at the possible consequence of defying tradition or authority, the passion with which an Outlaw will openly defy established powers, and the skill with which an Outlaw can bring into question even the most honored and scared traditions. The Outlaw understands this and fear is a favored weapon in the Outlaw’s arsenal. Despite the unrest the Outlaw brings to any situation, the Outlaw embodies the energy necessary for progress to occur, for wrongs to be righted, for justice to prevail when the path has become deceptive and complacent. The correct path is the one that has not been compromised. The appearance of Hicel can also mean that a person possessing the qualities of the Outlaw has entered your life, or is about to, in direct association with the challenge or issue you face. If such a person appears, pay attention to the challenges they bring (or have already brought) to the situation as they may be here to help you challenge convention, reaffirm your beliefs, or be challenging your motivations on the matter. The appearance of Hicel can also be a powerful suggestion that you are currently in possession of the power of the Outlaw, soon will be, or that embodying that energy is necessary to proceed effectively.
When Hicel (high-sul) appears in reversal it is often an indication that the strength of will required to challenge an existing situation is not currently in your possession, but that it needs to be. Focus on developing the energies necessary to not only see how things are, but how they may be failing as the result of complacency or tradition. Once identified, the will and conviction to challenge a misguided path must be found in order to proceed effectively. Transform any fear into a source of strength for addressing the issue, knowing that there is power in a strong and passionate voice for change, but no such power when one retreats from a challenge or lacks the confidence to assert oneself with passion. Changing the circumstances of the situation are necessary and the strength to make change is your challenge. Make peace with your fears, announce your challenge, and the correct path will appear. The appearance of a reversed Hicel can also mean that a person possessing qualities contrary to those of the Outlaw has entered your life, or is about to, in direct association with the challenge or issue you face. If such a person appears, pay attention to the traditions or conventions they bring (or have already brought) to the situation as they may be here to defend convention, standardize beliefs, or arbitrate conventional thinking on the matter. The appearance of Hicel can also be a powerful suggestion that you are currently in great need to possess the power of the Outlaw, soon will be, or that embodying that energy is necessary to proceed effectively. ---- Farenae (far-n-nae) is the royal Fire rune representing the energies of the Magician. When Farenae appears focus on transformation to find the correct path. The symmetrical and balanced design that symbolizes Farenae represents the focusing of the power of Fire. Fire alone can transform the other basic elements, and this magic is personified in the power of the Magician. Transformation is available to the Magician by combining the conviction of the Warrior and the will of the Outlaw with the knowledge of transformation to construct new realities, new perspectives, new designs. When the Magician works the magic of transformation, things do more than change, they morph into something entirely different and new. The Magician can alter anything in the environment: words, substance, beliefs, lives, paths, waterways, rocks, etc. With the ability to control such power, the Magician can be either an astonishingly amiable ally or a fiercely formidable foe. Like Fire, the Magician typically acts quickly, is unpredictable, and has a reputation for appearing when least expected. Transforming the elements is no easy task and, therefore, it is only over the course of a lifetime, and through traveling down many paths, that the Magician develops the wisdom to determine when the circumstances are correct to proceed with altering the world. Magicians are usually young when they begin to learn the power of transformation and it is for that reason that a younger Magician is sometimes viewed as a trickster, displaying fundamental magic both as a way to learn the craft, but also to impress onlookers. The older, wiser, Magician is less enamored with displaying the power of transformation and much more discreet when tapping the powers of the Fire, preferring to work behind the scenes or misdirecting others to believe the power is coming from somewhere other than the Magician. The secret of the Magician’s powers lie in the ability to gather all of the ingredients necessary to perform a transformation, the conviction to harness the Fire without fear, and the will to replace that which is for that which can be. The magic of transformation is not a power to be taken lightly because, once transformed, returning an item to its original form is not possible. This is true for all the items a Magician transforms: words, objects, perspective, the environment, alliances, outcomes, etc. To make the path correct, it must first be transformed. The appearance of Farenae can also mean that a person possessing the qualities of the Magician has entered your life, or is about to, in direct association with the challenge or issue you face. If such a person appears, pay attention to what they are transforming (or have already transformed) in the situation as they may be here to help you focus on the element needing transformation, providing insight into how the situation should be transformed, or be challenging a transformation you’ve begun. The appearance of Farenae in a cast can also be a powerful suggestion that you are currently in possession of the power of the Magician, soon will be, or that embodying that energy is necessary to proceed effectively. ---- Miame (mee-ah-may) is the symbolic rune representing manna. You have unusually high levels of energy available to you at this time. When Miame appears, it is likely that you are feeling particularly strong, confident, and capable…this is the effect stored energy, or manna, has on the Self. When your manna levels are high it suggests that you have recently learned, or are quickly learning, an important lesson on the journey. The strength this lesson is providing to the Self translates into enhanced abilities, resulting in a perceived sense of power. Miame is the primary source of the Magician’s power to transform the elements and, like the Magician, all of us have the ability to draw manna from the environment though few of us have learned how to recognize it and capture it. More likely, manna comes to us through the elements in ways we are not able to perceive, but the inherent sense of increased power and energy that manna provides rarely goes unnoticed. High levels of stored manna provide the power necessary to accomplish things more quickly, with greater impact, or in more substantial ways than we might otherwise be able to muster. At rare times, the levels of manna we store (or receive) can be so intense that we feel an almost obsessive need to interact with the world in some way, knowing our efforts will find successful conclusions. Though we are constantly receiving and depleting manna by merely interacting with the world, at times of learning the amount of manna we attract to us can be significant. When manna levels are high most of us will feel compelled to take some kind of action in our lives, conversely, when we possess low levels of manna even the simplest tasks can seem undoable. The challenge of understanding the power of Miame is to first become aware of it, then to channel it in ways that help us with the journey. When Miame appears in connection with other runes that suggest action, use this collaborative sign as a guide for how you should proceed. Take action to find the correct path.
Miame (mee-ah-may) is the symbolic rune representing manna. When Miame appears in reverse it is a strong suggestion that the time is not ripe for action. You do not have sufficient energies stored to successfully complete the task, or deal with the situation. Since manna is attracted to us as we learn about the world, or as we positively interact with it, we have the ability to draw it to us by increasing our knowledge of the world. Focusing on activities that provide new knowledge, introduce us to new things, or enhance our perceptions of the world can serve to replenish the Self with manna. Therefore, you should engage in these kinds of endeavors until your sense of power feels sufficient to address the current issue or situation you face. Over time, if these endeavors are ones that you incorporate into your daily life the appearance of a reversed Miame will occur less and less frequently over time. Feed the Self to find the correct path. ----- Vendel (vehn-dehl) is the symbolic rune representing focus. Your ability, or inability to focus is impacting the situation. Focus is represented by a wand, which typically is pointed towards items that are about to be acted upon. Likewise, in order to accomplish successful actions on the path, you need to be able to single out those situations, people, actions, etc., that require acting upon. Throughout the course of a day (or a lifetime) we must interact so many times, in so many ways, with so many things, that we can become complacent as we journey on the path. When we lack intentionality in our lives, few gifts come to us, or are won, which further increases our complacency. Such an unfocused life leaves us unsatisfied with the journey, unsure of the path, and we must constantly battle ourselves to avoid this state of mind. Maintaining focus is the weapon we have to avoid such a fate. When Vendel appears it may be a sign that you have lost focus, that you are meandering on the path instead of moving towards its destination. If so, reassess your situation, your resolve, your intent and refocus your efforts…move forward with intention. Conversely, Vendel could suggest that you have focused on the wrong things and this misguided focus is blocking the path. Typically, when you know you are intensely focused and the results you desire are not materializing you may find that your blinders are set improperly and are causing you to miss an important element requiring attention (and focus). Especially during those times when your ability to focus is unquestioned, it is often the item you are holding in focus that must be let go of before progress can occur. Finding the correct path requires focus. ---- Torthara (tor-tha-rah) is the symbolic rune representing control. When interacting with the world, the skill to channel energies, act intentionally, even perceive things truthfully, all require the Self to assert some level of control. When Tothara appears it indicates your abilities at this place and time are sufficient to allow you to take control of the situation, perhaps, that you are already in control but do not perceive the strength of your influence at this time. You are operating from a position of strength and likely have an unusually high level of insight into the situation, a bird’s eye view, a perspective that will allow you to take in all of the relevant elements in the environment and orchestrate their interactions to produce a positive result. When we find ourselves in a position of great influence we all react differently and many feel discomfort with having such power at their disposal. This is the challenge of Torthara to both feel comfortable with orchestrating action, and to not abuse the influence we currently have. On the journey, we must learn to accept control when it finds us on the path, and be comfortable with it when it lies in our grasp. Without the ability to accept and use control when we possess it our attempts to be intentional are weakened. Sometimes having control requires us to delegate it to others, sometimes to exert it forcefully, sometimes to battle our Self to keep from abusing it, sometimes to merely acknowledge it and move forward. Used wisely, the ability to control our actions, or those within the environment, is a great gift, used unwisely control can be an incredibly harmful power to command. The irony of control is that abusing its power is actually the loss of control as a result of having control. The correct path is the one you can influence ---- Ceru (say-roo) is the symbolic rune representing skill. Take inventory of your strengths and talents, one of them is heightened at this point in time and available for you to apply to the situation or challenge you face. To be skillful means that you are capable of more than simply accomplishing a task, that your abilities in a particular venue are precise, powerful, and intentional. As we walk the path, too often we are faced with situations for which we are unprepared, or under-prepared. This is not the current situation you face. The challenge in front of you, though it may be difficult, can be overcome with a skill you possess. As in any situation, look carefully at what needs to be done and apply your skills to it, you will achieve success. The challenge of skill, and the assumption that goes with having skill, is that you command enough control, experience, nuance, and expertise to apply it appropriately and will not overuse or exploit it. When you have determined which of your skills should be employed, or have a sense of which of your skills will be most useful in the current situation, take care to be skillful in your skillfulness. The correct path is the one you can skillfully navigate. ---- Essgam (ess-gahm) is the symbolic rune representing a mask. Masks have many uses: to deceive, to hide you from view, to intimidate, to misdirect attention. Masks are typically defensive in nature, hiding something from the light. When Essgam appears consider whether you are intentionally masking your intentions or efforts and, if so, is this the appropriate use of the mask in relation to the situation you face. Perhaps you have donned a mask unintentionally and this is making it difficult to proceed. The challenge of the mask is to be fully aware of when one needs to be donned, what purpose it has to the situation you face, and whether you are using the energies of the mask from a position of strength or weakness. The danger of using masks occurs when, rather than employing them for intentional reasons related to intentional actions, we hide behind them as a way to avoid or ignore a situation that must be addressed. One way or another, a mask has entered the situation, hopefully, you are aware of that and are applying its use appropriately. If this is the case your efforts will likely find a positive result. If, however, you are unaware of the mask in the center of the situation, you must find it (whether it is yours or someone else’s), consider its purpose, and respond to it intentionally and with resolve. Masks appear when direct action is somehow either a dangerous route to take, or because deception has entered a situation. If the mask that is influencing a situation is not yours, unmask those who are wearing it, and force an honest resolution to the challenge. The correct path is the one that can be fully seen. ---- Tuempli (to-wem-plee) is the symbolic rune representing magic. Tuempli is referred to by some as the fifth element and represents the unseen forces in our lives, the powers and energies that act with us (sometimes on us) in the world, but go largely unperceived as we walk the paths of life. When Tuempli appears you can be certain that abnormal levels of power and energy are influencing the situation. In ancient times Tuempli usually appeared as the result of a person with impeccable character influencing a situation with intention. Today, Tuempli typically appears when an unconscious balance of will, stored power, skill, clarity, wisdom, etc., achieve a convergence that somehow awaken its energies. This suggests that, even though we cannot directly influence Tuempli, each of us has the potential to awaken the power of Tuempli if we can more towards a life of integrity. It is the impeccable Self, then, that provides us with a path to tap into the powers of Tuempli. The magic of Tuempli has not appeared at this time to appeal to the rational Self, but to awaken the impeccable Self. The character and integrity of the Self will determine how (or if) you can tap into the fifth element’s potential with the situation you face. Preparing the Self for each encounter with Tuempli is a part of the life journey, and if you have wasted time on your paths to things other than developing an impeccable Self, it is likely that this encounter with Tuempli will pass by, wasted. However, know that other encounters may come so prepare for them. The correct path leads to the impeccable Self. ----- Nen is the rune representing the basic element Water and is a powerful and forceful influence. When Nen appears focus on the emotional Self. What you feel is of paramount importance and the deep-rooted catalysts for those feelings should not be ignored. The primary reasons for your feelings can come from the external forces of the surrounding environment or the internal forces of memories over time. Either way, your Self is being saturated and you must pay attention to how it feels to be so engulfed. It is likely that you are either about to experience dramatic change or have just come through such a change and how you contain yourself will be of great import on the path ahead. Above all, trust what you feel and do not allow the surface to override the depths of your feeling. To find the correct path, believe in what you feel and intuit the way.
When Nen appears in reversal it indicates that the issue at hand is currently being reconciled below the surface. This can suggest that more emotion needs to be brought to the situation, or that in order to proceed effectively the display of emotions will not be helpful. This does not suggest suppressing your emotions, only that placing them on display at this point will not help the situation, and could exacerbate it in a way that is not helpful. Regardless, understand that the depth of the issue is running unusually deep and to proceed effectively requires that you have a firm understanding of the emotions in play, not merely those on display. You must be absolutely certain of your emotional state before the correct path will surface. ---- Ereda (air-ray-dah) is the royal Water rune representing the energies of the Orphan. When Ereda appears focus on the simple things in life to find the correct path. The single wave that symbolizes Ereda represents the strength and conviction required when traveling alone in life. The Orphan depends on few and never expects the help of others. Life has been, and is, a singular endeavor for the Orphan and, as such, little is needed, nor asked for, by the Orphan when a journey must be made, an obstacle overcome, or a confrontation accepted. The Orphan believes, above all else, that the powers and energies required to succeed are contained within and only need to be channeled correctly to overcome any obstacle. Unfettered with the nuisances of wealth and resources, the Orphan can accomplish much with very little and is ingenious by nature, able to perceive how simple items found on the path can wield great power when combined with cleverness. Like Water, and a single wave, it is difficult to hinder the momentum of an Orphan when a path has already been chosen and taken. The trappings of the Orphan are few, and a wealth of available resources can confuse and cloud the focus of the Orphan by making solutions appear more complex than they actually are. The answer will be best found by believing and relying on the Self, taking the simple road. To find the correct path, keep it simple. The appearance of Ereda can also mean that a person possessing the qualities of the Orphan has entered your life, or is about to, in direct association with the challenge or issue you face. If such a person appears, pay attention to the simplicity they bring (or have already brought) to the situation as they may be here to help you see the obvious, maintain your focus, or be hiding what needs to be seen. The appearance of Ereda can also be a powerful suggestion that you are currently in possession of the power of the Orphan, soon will be, or that embodying that energy is necessary to proceed effectively.
When Ereda (air-ray-dah) appears in reversal it indicates that focus has been lost. The challenge at hand is likely being perceived too complexly and simplifying the matter is essential for success to occur. Concentrate and put aside the items or beliefs of others that are interfering with taking action. The answer does not lie in the complexity of the situation, nor in the magic of others, or the items they possess. Everything necessary to proceed correctly is at hand, you need look no farther than yourself, or the things you possess. The power and energy you require is here, tap it, choose a course and take it. Finding the correct path is obvious and likely right in front of you…take it. The appearance of a reversed Ereda can also mean that a person possessing qualities contrary to those of the Orphan has entered your life, or is about to, in direct association with the challenge or issue you face. If such a person appears, pay attention to the complexity they bring (or have already brought) to the situation as they may be here to keep you from seeing the obvious, clouding your focus, or trying to distort what you see. The appearance of a reversed Ereda can also be a powerful suggestion that you are currently in great need of possessing the power of the Orphan, soon will, or that embodying that energy is necessary to proceed effectively. --- Dil (dee-el) is the royal Water rune representing the energies of the Lover. When Dil appears focus on the most cherished things in life to find the correct path. The ornate and balanced cup that symbolizes Dil represents the complex and synergistic nature of Love, as well as its fragility. The symbol of the Lover has also been associated with the head of the infant in the mother’s breast. Interpreted either way, the Lover is devoted to another and is incomplete without the Other. The Other has no symbol in the runic order but is a necessary component of a fully realized Lover. Much of the Lover’s power comes from the relationship with the Other and the strength the Other provides. Like two streams merging to flow as a river, or rivers flowing into a lake or the sea, the Lover is incomplete until joined with the sprit of the Other. Unlike the Orphan, the Lover cannot typically succeed alone, but needs the Other in order to overcome the obstacles and challenges of the journey. Understanding the complexity and emotion of the Lover is essential to addressing the challenge you face. The person or things in life that hold your passion also hold the keys to the power you need to successfully overcome what blocks the path, and devotion and an unwavering allegiance to that which is dear to you is an absolute requirement to finding the correct path. Often, the Lover appears when the things you most care about are central to the situation: values, belief systems, simple right and wrong. As one would not forsake the beloved, one cannot expect to forsake those things that are loved and expect a satisfying result. Hold true to that which you truly love because a loose grip will cost you both the love of the Other and the power the Other provides you. The dedicated, passionate, and heartfelt path is the correct one. The appearance of Dil can also mean that a person possessing the qualities of the Lover has entered your life, or is about to, in direct association with the challenge or issue you face. If such a person appears, pay attention to the passion they bring (or have already brought) to the situation as they may be here to help you rekindle a lost passion, refocus you on what is truly important, or be keeping you from the Other. The appearance of Dil can also be a powerful suggestion that you are currently in possession of the power of the Lover, soon will be, or that embodying that energy is necessary to proceed effectively.
When Dil (dee-el) appears in reversal it indicates that the synergies of the Lover and the Other are especially fragile. There is likely something, or someone, interfering with the balance of the Lover and the Other, potentially sapping the energy of the union. A rekindling of the passion, or a reaffirmation of love may be in order, or eyes cast away for too long may need to return to that which, though temporarily lost, is always found in Love. The light of true love always shines through and if that is no longer the case, cast off that which is hiding the light in the darkness. Rejoice again in the passion found in the Other and declare it as such. Search out the Other, embrace the Other, Love the Other, because the Other will help you to find the correct path. The appearance of a reversed Dil can also mean that a person possessing qualities contrary to those of the Other has entered your life, or is about to, in direct association with the challenge or issue you face. If such a person appears, pay attention to the passion they bring (or have already brought) to the situation as they may be here to reignite your passion, remind you of what you hold dear, or cast a shadow on the Other. The appearance of a reversed Dil can also be a powerful suggestion that you are currently in great need to possess the power of the Other, soon will be, or that embodying that energy is necessary to proceed effectively. You may not be the Lover, but the Other. --- Wealai (we-ah-lay) is the royal Water rune representing the energies of the Fool. When Wealai appears focus on the pleasurable things in life to find the correct path. The balanced, though unusual, image that symbolizes Wealai represents the beauty that can be found when convention does not dominate life – there are no straight lines, no clear paths, and the complex image is made from configuring one simple shape. The Fool represents the power of play, in action. Letting the heart lead, pleasure dominate, and fun rule, the Fool reminds us that life need not always be the serious endeavor we sometimes box ourselves into. Like Water, the Fool typically travels the path of least resistance, finding joy in the journey and drawing energy from the experience. Perhaps lazy, perhaps simply unwilling to worry about the little things, the Fool instead soaks life in and revels in the pleasure of the moment. Spontaneous, the Fool is quick to laugh, quick to forgive, difficult to anger and has an uncanny ability to find the good in any situation. Anxious to experience life, the Fool looks for opportunities to try new things, take a risk, and generally go with the flow. Life is too short, there is so much to be seen and enjoyed, and the Fool intends to see and feel all that is possible in the course of a lifetime. The correct path is the one with heart. The appearance of Wealai can also mean that a person possessing the qualities of the Fool has entered your life, or is about to, in direct association with the challenge or issue you face. If such a person appears, pay attention to the joy they bring (or have already brought) to the situation as they may be here to help you remember that all is not as serious as it sometimes seems, help you rediscover the playful side of your nature, or be distracting you with nonsense. The appearance of Wealai can also be a powerful suggestion that you are currently in possession of the power of the Fool, soon will be, or that embodying that energy is necessary to proceed effectively. --- Embrathka (em-brauth-kah) is the symbolic rune representing acceptance. There is nothing you can do to alter a recent situation because this part of the journey has been played out to its conclusion. Accepting the result of this particular path is now your task, and your ability to acknowledge the outcome is necessary in order to move forward. Whether a path has been completed with a positive or negative result, understanding that it is complete is the key to moving forward effectively. Once acceptance of a situation has been truly embraced, the energies that were being devoted to it can now be refocused on other issues of importance. Refocusing is critical since wasting time trying to change something that cannot be changed, dwelling on ‘what might have been’, or basking too long in the glory of a success, merely draws energy from you and tangles your emotions in ways that can keep you from moving forward on the journey. Accept where you are now, and begin preparing to select the next path.
Embrathka (em-brauth-kah) is the symbolic rune representing acceptance. There is nothing you can do to alter a recent situation because this part of the journey has been played out to its conclusion. When Embrathka appears in reverse it is important that you find the strength to accept the result because an important lesson awaits you. The recent result is less important than the lesson it teaches so you must try to discover the lesson and learn from it. If you allow your emotions to interfere with the lesson, you are likely to follow a similar path in the future because the lesson to be learned is essential to your life journey. Regardless of whether you have come to this point with great joy or in bitter despair because of the recent result, the lesson is one that will help you to attain similar joy or avoid despair in the future. Typically, success results from doing what is right and failure is the result of doing wrong, however, sometimes the opposite is true. Accepting how you have come to this point, at this time, is often the lesson you must learn. The correct path lies in front of you, the one behind you merely circles around to this same point. ---- Ramora (ruh-more-rah) is the symbolic rune representing storms. Strong and powerful emotions are impacting the situation and blocking it from resolution. The storm represents the unleashing of the emotional Self and indicates that the Self is under attack at a most fundamental level. Resolving the issue, and protecting the Self, may require focusing your emotional energies so that action can be taken, or releasing the energy in a manner that does not harm the Self. Either way, some level of control is necessary before the storm will pass. Riding out storms of emotion can be difficult, and often leave debris scattered in their wakes. Understanding that storms require a mix of unstable elements in order to manifest makes it possible to take action against a storm by identifying what is feeding it and refusing to supply it with the energy it requires to sustain itself. This power to refuse to cooperate with the needs of storms lie at the heart of surviving them, and serves to protect the Self. To find the correct path, control and protect the emotional Self.
Ramora (ruh-more-rah) is the symbolic rune representing storms. When Ramorra appears in reverse, a storm is brewing. The current situation is becoming unstable and, if not addressed, an emotional storm is likely. Fortunately, Ramorra in reverse suggests the temporary gift of foresight is within your grasp. Look…listen…feel. What is the source of the unstable energy being drawn to the situation? If you can find the source, you can possibly prevent it from becoming manifest. Look to your emotions, or to the emotions of someone nearby. The emotional Self of someone is under attack and, unless addressed head on, the instability of the situation will soon coordinate into the chaos of a storm. Apparently, there is time to address the situation and avoid the storm, so do not ignore the token. Find the will and emotional courage to act now, before the situation takes an undesirable turn. The path is unstable, look for the source of its weakness and repair it before moving forward on the path. ---- Ahreb (ah-reb) is the symbolic rune representing solitude. The current path requires you to travel alone. Walking a path in solitude can rejuvenate the Self, allowing it to take in all that surrounds it, undisturbed by the distractions of the world. Solitude can bring introspection, insight, and new knowledge to the Self. Sometimes, feelings of freedom and oneness with the world can only be achieved in solitude and, therefore, it should be embraced. But solitude cannot always be contrived or arranged, and it is not unusual to suddenly find ourselves alone unexpectedly. The challenge of solitude is to understand the lessons it is trying to convey to the Self, and not to fall into feelings of loneliness when confronted with those lessons. This is the greatest challenge of solitude - not to submit to the darker energies that hover around it, jealous of the power it commands. If despair and loneliness present themselves in the presence of solitude it is essential that you not succumb to their siren call. Refusing to turn solitude into something dark requires strength and conviction, and above all else, the ability to be comfortable being alone. When solitude appears on the path nourish the Self with knowledge, expose the Self to new things, allow the Self to heal if that is what is necessary. Quiet, tranquility, and harmony are some of the most powerful gifts of solitude, focus on these when you are lucky enough to have the Self to yourself. The path ahead is open to you alone. ---- Iluvame (ih-loov-ah-may) is the symbolic rune representing wholeness. The elements of the world, and the Self are balanced. Iluvame is a powerful source of energy for the Self and suggests your powers are in a heightened state, prepared for anything you may encounter on the path. The energies of the world are flowing through you and nourishing the Self. Likewise, the world is allowing your energies to flow through it, accepting the powers you are exerting on the environment. This is a time of tranquility and oneness with all that is around you, a time of great potential, an important moment on the journey. Embrace the moment and revel in your skill at finding this place and time on the path. The world is at your command so move forward with enthusiasm and focus, shining brightly. And do shine, because that is the challenge of Iluvame, to share in the good fortune that has appeared on your path. You have traveled so far to reach this place, now that you have arrived, what actions will you take next? The correct path is the one you can share. ---- Aavarae (eye-va-ray) is the life rune representing the Self. The Self is, simply, all that your are. The Self is you as a whole person, one that is both ego and alter ego, spirit and soul. The Self is unique, and each Self follows an exclusive path in life, takes a different journey than any other. The Self is you, manifested as an evolving and unique individual. When Aavarae appears, above all else, consider the uniqueness of your journey, of your path. You alone can find the correct answer, the correct action, the correct path. No one else has seen what you’ve seen, learned what you’ve learned, feel what you’ve felt and it is this individual journey that has led you here, to this time and place, confronted with a challenge that only you can resolve. When Aavarea appears the quality of the paths you’ve taken, the intentionality of your journeys, the evolution of you as an individual is to be tested. Understand the test, pay attention to the strengths and weakness you have brought to the situation because, as you address the challenge, you will learn what paths still need to be taken, which paths have served you well, and which paths you may not have considered along the way, but now must. Take inventory of who you are and how prepared you find yourself at the moment, understanding this is key to acting now and on the journey ahead. The correct path is the one only you can see. ---- Seredar (ser-eh-dare) is the life rune representing the womb. The womb is the most secure and nurturing place we have known in our lives. It represents the genesis of who we are, the potential of all we are to become. When Seredar appears, you are in the process of creation, of bringing forth something new to your world or to the Self. Seredar suggests that something truly unique is about to occur as a direct result of who you are, or from what you have set in motion. The womb’s place in the world is to develop that which has the energy of life, but which is not yet ready to see the light of day. Think carefully, what are you building, conceiving, desiring? If you do not know, you must find it soon and continue to nurture it, for only then will it manifest as you desire…providing you give it the care and protection it needs. When Seredar appears it is a time to feel the joy that comes from expectation, from knowing that something special is about to arrive in your life. But do not forget the fragility of the womb, take care of yourself, manage your thoughts, do not act rashly, or without proper consideration of the environment. As powerful as the womb is, it is also the most fragile of environments so protect it with as much zeal as you can muster. ---- Keme (kuh-may) is the rune representing the basic element Earth and is a powerful and forceful influence. When Keme appears focus on the identity of the Self. What your five senses tell you is of vital importance to resolving the situation you face. It is necessary that you correctly interpret how the physical world is acting upon you to determine which of your five senses are facing the challenge (do not assume it is only one). Only then will you know which part of your true Self requires nurturing before a successful result can be achieved. The test you face is a direct challenge to your identity. How you interpret the situation, allow a correct course of action to evolve, and ultimately implement the solution, will reveal the tangible elements that define who you are at this time, in this place. Take the time to gather the power and energy you need to address the situation correctly, nurture yourself and the environment so the situation can evolve, then stand firmly in the place you have chosen to take up the challenge. It will be your patience and steadfastness that will provide you with the power to overcome the challenge and reveal the correct path.
When Keme (kuh-may) appears in reversal it indicates that some part of the physical world is not in balance. What you sense (feel, taste, smell, see, or hear) is of vital importance to the challenge you face. Paying attention to the physical clues and cues that surround you, will provide the knowledge from which a solution will be derived. Something tangible (physical) lies at the heart of the matter, and you will need to nurture the situation and possibly provide the sustenance necessary for the situation to evolve. Be patient and allow for the time required to evolve the situation into what it can become rather than trying to change it into something you would like it to be. Providing balance to the environment will reveal the correct path. ---- Casta (kah-stah) is the royal Earth rune representing the energies of the Caregiver. When Casta appears focus on the basic necessities in life to find the correct path. The triangle that symbolizes Casta represents the basic building block of the Self. Described in different ways over time, the three sides have often been referred to as mind, body, and soul. The Caregiver is focused on nurturing these most basic elements of the Self, working always to keep them in balance, and properly nourished. Like the Earth, Casta provides sustenance to the Self by providing food, water, and warmth: the most basic of needs. Even in ancient times it was understood that until an individual’s most basic needs in life were met pursuing higher level endeavors would not be possible or fruitful. This is the role of Caregiver, to provide the most fundamental resources to the Self. It is not uncommon for those who understand the powers of the Caregiver to make comparisons of this energy to the love of a mother - the idealized caregiver. This is why the Caregiver is considered a selfless power, one that will sacrifice itself in order to ensure the survival of those being cared for. The Caregiver is generous, sometimes enabling, often an altruist, willing and able to place it’s own security in peril to ensure the safety of another. The Caregiver is quick to sacrifice, quick to forgive, slow to anger, and eager to serve. When in the presence of the Caregiver the Self feels taken care of, loved, cherished, accepted, and completely secure in the world because one will never want when the Caretaker is nearby. To find the correct path be certain you have what is necessary to make the journey. The appearance of Casta can also mean that a person possessing the qualities of the Caregiver has entered your life, or is about to, in direct association with the challenge or issue you face. If such a person appears, pay attention to the resources they bring (or have already brought) to the situation as they may be here to provide resources for your efforts, encourage your efforts, or be challenging your motivation to move forward by satisfying your needs here. The appearance of Casta can also be a powerful suggestion that you are currently in possession of the power of the Caregiver, soon will be, or that embodying that energy is necessary to proceed effectively.
When Casta (kah-stah) appears in reversal it is often an indication that the most basic resources required to challenge an existing situation are not currently in your possession, but need to be. Focus on gathering the basic resources necessary to begin traveling down the next path. One (or more) of those resources have not yet been accumulated in quantities sufficient to provide an effective result. Attempt to understand what is lackin
