The princess Psyche was so beautiful that even Venus was jealous of her. Venus instructed her son Cupid to punish the innocent girl. Venus wanted Psyche to be tricked into loving some low, unworthy person.
Cupid found Psyche lying asleep. He may have been overwhelmed by her beauty, or he may have been wounded with one of his own arrows. At any rate he fell in love and whisked Psyche off to a magnificent palace. There Psyche was deeply affected by the beauty of the building. Golden pillars supported the roof. Magnificent paintings and carvings were everywhere.
As she was admiring the interior, an invisible person spoke to her. He said, "Everything you see is yours. I am the husband for whom you have been destined. We shall always be happy, but there is one requirement. You must never look upon my face." The voice was that of Cupid, though Psyche didn't know it.
And so Psyche lived happily...but not forever after. After a while, she missed her family. She asked that her family be brought to her. Cupid unwillingly agreed. When they arrived, everything went well for a time. Then the sisters asked Psyche about her mysterious husband. They aroused all kinds of suspicious in her. They advised her to take a lamp and a sharp knife into the chamber with her. If the husband proved to be a monster, she could kill him.
