With the strange spirits chased away I was ready to scry for information about Edward's killer.
Scrying spells come in several types.
Scrying the distance is the most common, and frequently people who are aiming for past or future scrying actually do that.
Scrying into the future is like staring into the sun. You can make things out, and sometimes even details, but the things you think you see aren't always what you think they are. Besides, the future is always changing. So scrying the future is generally not worth the trouble, or the headache.
Scrying into the past is like watching something at the end of a long tunnel. While it's easier to see it, it's still removed at such a distance. The stronger spells make the tunnel shorter, but many of the details are still dim. The better target you have, the more preice the spell can be.
I knew the night I wanted, the basic area I wanted, and I even knew one of the people involved intimately.
My spell was as good as it was going to get.
