a little brown book
finding the life of Alexander Shaw, a kind of serial story.
Physically, it wasn't that impressive, it started out looking like a wisp of fog, and thickened to a ribbon, gaining legs, arms and claws. Over all, the effect was like a Chinese Dragon, but with none of the Dragon's majesty. In fact, had I come across it suddenly, my first instinct would have been to step on it, like some sort of foul thing. A cat would have kicked sand over it automatically.

Thinking back, I cannot describe the voice, or even give a more precise description than my impressions. It is as if it defies words. But I can remember what it said, and what it did.
"So. A sacrifice, a binding, a request." for such a small thing it had a booming voice. I was sure the landlady would appear, but the others were simply enthralled. light gleamed around the edge of the demons eyes, but it did not move. It was more still than a lizard. "Small, insignificant, simple is all that you will gain from me. Let me go. I am worthless, pointless, weak."
"No." Cedric said. This dissimulation was expected.
"We will not let you go." Henry confirmed.
"You will do as we say." I continued.
"And only then will we return you to your place."
"Then name your price, your gift, your doom." (on this Henry and I disagreed, it seems everyone else heard 'boon') "You do not need to speak, it would take too long."
This I did not like. This gave each of us the ability to make our requests secretly. Secrets I had found, tended to attract deceit. Though we had discussed what we would want, who is to say that any of them could not change their mind?

What I asked for was paltry indeed, and I could have gotten it just by asking around the group- noble patronage for my theatre. Henry told me later that his mind froze, and all he could think of was a broach his mother had given him once, and he had lost. (the broach turned up in the pocket of his waistcoat when his valet pressed it.) but none of the others cared to share what it was they required from the demon.

After a mere second, there was a crack, like a whip, or like skater's ice come thaw- we all jumped, and the candles from the circle extinguished. I fumbled a pack of Lucifer matches from the inside pocket of my coat, and struck one. The creature was gone, and the white chalk inside the candles had turned black, with a texture like tar.

Our first summoning was complete, and as everyone else declared, a success.
