Chapter Three
Jade woke up Friday morning smiling. She had no classes today and she didn’t have to go to work. She had until 7:00 tonight to have an easy day. Her entire morning consisted of her morning workout and taking a shower. And the rest of her afternoon involved sitting at her desk studying until her stomach began to growl in protest. She ate her honey flavored Greek yogurt while she studied some more and then blow dried and curled her hair and put her face on and put on an old t-shirt David had given her during freshman year. This thing was probably so outdated but she didn’t care. He’d probably get the biggest kick out of it. She put on her nicest black jeans and put her favorite boots on over them. She was pretty sure she’d regret being inside of a hot stuffy club with the pants, boots and leather jacket but she didn’t care. She didn’t do this very often. Why not milk it for all it’s worth?
She met David at the parking lot in front of the club. He was leaning against the wall a few feet from the front door smoking a cigarette with the rest of his band members. Jade recognized one of them but other than that she didn’t know any of them. David shoved them out of his way so he could bring Jade into the circle, “Guys, this was the girl I was telling you about. Jade, you remember Allen my guitar player. And this is Stan, my bass player and Robert my drummer.”
“It’s nice to meet you guys,” Jade shook each guy’s hand, “I haven’t seen David play since freshman year. I’m excited to see how he’s changed musically.”
“I think you’ll like his new sound,” Allen said. David put out his cigarette and patted his shoulder, “Come on you guys we need to start setting up. The last band finished playing.”
“Come backstage with us,” Allen, being the only member paying attention to her at that point led her into the club with them and headed backstage, “I like that shirt by the way. Didn’t even think you still had it.”
“I save lots of things,” Jade said, “I still have old tickets and backstage passes and stuff. I never got rid of those things.”
“How cool!” he laughed and frowned when he noticed David just walking right past Jade without even acknowledging her. Back in freshman year, Allen was always the one to point out to David that he was totally ignoring Jade. He was always Jade’s favorite friend. She was glad he was the member to remain in the band, “Do you want something to drink? I know you’re not twenty-one but they have soda here and stuff.”
“A coke is fine,” Allen nodded and disappeared to get her drink. David finally approached her and hugged her, “Are you excited? I’m excited! You haven’t been here in so long.”
“I’ve barely been able to talk to you since I got here,” Jade grumbled, “I might have to leave early. My mom doesn’t like it when I come home late. The dogs freak out and wake everyone up.”
“No you don’t have to go early!” David grabbed her by the arms and shook her, “You can just spend the night at my place.”
Jade laughed, assuming at first that David was telling a joke. When he didn’t laugh with her, she stopped and touched his shoulder, “You can’t be serious David. I can’t stay with someone I haven’t even seen in four years David. We’re not even dating. We’re practically strangers.”
“We have a history together,” David said, “It’s not like you’d be going home with a complete stranger. You can take my bed and I can take my couch.”
“I don’t have any pajamas or extra clothes,” Jade smirked, suddenly amused with this argument.
“I have something you can sleep in and you can leave in the morning and you won’t have to worry about having extra clothes,” David countered. Jade crossed her arms and pulled her phone out of her pocket, “I suppose I can call my mom and tell her I’m sleeping over with a friend.”
“Great!” The other band members were rushing onto the stage, the curtains still closed with their instruments. Allen was right on their heels and he passed a cup of soda to Jade while he headed for the stage, “I’ll see you in a minute!”
Jade watched David perform and suddenly remembered why she started liking him in the first place. He had such presence and you couldn’t help but be attracted to him. He had such energy, being able to run around and jump around and sing nonstop for an hour. It was amazing watching him. She could never do what he does. She had to give him credit for that. David came back, his face glistening with sweat and Jade tossed him a towel, “You were great. Nothing has changed at all.”
“I’m glad you liked it,” David wrapped her into a hug and she kissed his cheek. She was going to turn away to commend the other guys but he stopped her by grabbing her chin and gently pressed his lips against hers. She closed her eyes and kissed him back, pushing her body against his, deepening their kiss. He broke the kiss and stroked her cheek with his fingertips.
“So…are we giving us another chance?” David asked. Jade grinned and closed her eyes, kissing him again, needing no words to tell him yes.
After a horrible, horrible day with Vivian and Gerard on Monday, Maya had ignored Frank the whole ride back to her house. After he finally managed to get a response out of her, he promised the best date ever Friday night, which just so happened to be the anniversary of the day they first met. Maya didn’t know that but apparently Frank had remembered the exact day they’d met which she found to be the cutest thing ever, which made her forgive him for forcing her to endure Vivian’s stupidity. On Friday night, he picked her up and took her to a small coffee shop. It was a real classy shop. There was a guy in the corner playing the piano and had black and white linoleum floors. They were clean and shiny. Frank knew Maya was never interested in expensive restaurants. She was content with a small, quiet little coffee shop where they could sit and have a nice conversation away from everyone else. She loved that he remembered little details like that.
“This was really nice Frank. Thank you,” Maya said as she sipped her tea.
“Anything for you,” he grabbed her free hand and squeezed it, “I’m so happy I got to spend four years with you.”
She set down her cup of iced tea and grabbed the lemon wedge off the rim of the cup and squeezed it over her drink, then stirring it with her straw. She took another sip of her tea and her eyes moved over to the counter. She adjusted her glasses, wondering if the person at the register was who she thought it was.
“Is that my professor?” she asked quietly.
“What professor?” Frank leaned over so he could see what she was seeing. He turned around completely and Maya could tell that was her English professor for sure. He was still wearing a suit, which Maya enjoyed immensely. She hid a smile and turned back to Frank. But he’d seen her anyway.
“Maya!” he called her and walked over to their table in the back of the shop. He held a hot paper cup of coffee in his hand.
“Professor Gray hi!” Maya’s entire face lit up when he came over to the table, hoping Frank wasn’t noticing that.
“Who’s this?” Professor Gray held his hand out for Frank to shake. Frank slowly lifted his hand to shake the Professor’s, glancing at Maya every few seconds as he grabbed his hand and shook it.
Frank answered for her, “I’m Frank. I’m Maya’s boyfriend. You’re Professor Gray huh? I’ve heard a lot about you this past week.”
Maya blushed and kept her eyes on the lemon wedge floating in her tea, knowing Professor Gray was staring her down. He finally started laughing, “You have? Good things I hope.”
“Oh they are don’t worry,” he said, “It’s nice to finally meet the English Professor my girlfriend likes so much.”
The more Frank spoke, the redder Maya’s face became. She couldn’t even look at Professor Gray even though she really wanted to look at that bearded face of his. He laughed again, “Well it’s nice to see English is always on your mind. I’ll see you Monday Maya.”
“Bye Professor Gray,” Maya hid her face and waved.
“We’re not in school. You can call me Richard,” Maya’s head shot up and she looked him dead in the eye, “Ok. Bye, uh, Richard.”
He left the shop and Maya for some reason watched him go until Frank snapped his fingers to get her attention, “Maya! Hello? Your boyfriend is right here!”
“Sorry,” Maya cleared her throat and sipped her tea, “I just never knew his first name. It was fun to say it.”
Frank paused and Maya was expecting him to get really mad at her. Instead he laughed and shook his head, grabbing her hand again, “You’re so funny sometimes Maya.”
Frank drove Maya back to his apartment after they finished their date and he led her to the middle of his living room and stopped her, “Now I want you to wait here. Don’t move.”
“Frank what are you up to?” Maya smirked as Frank disappeared into his bedroom. After a few minutes he opened the door enough to fit his head, “Come here. I wanted to do something special since we’ve known each other for four years. You deserve something special.”
Maya came into his bedroom and was greeted by scented candles all over the place. There was a combination of smells coming for all different directions. Candy apple, cinnamon bun, cherry blossom, all kinds of smells. He’d scattered rose petals all over his bed and held a rose in front of her, “To show you I love you.”
“Frank you’re so sweet,” Maya reached out and grabbed him by the neck, kissing him passionately. He grabbed her by the waist and fell back onto his bed. He rolled over so she was on her back and kissed up and down her neck, nipping at her jaw every now and then. In that moment, seeing how sweet Frank was and how much effort he’d put into tonight, she hated herself for even glancing at another man. Especially her goddamn teacher. She definitely wasn’t going to win girlfriend of the year for this.
Audrey wasn’t sure why she was dropping off the first draft of an essay Professor Brooks had assigned the day before. Maybe she was trying to show him how quick she was so maybe she’d have a chance of being picked to work with him on his project. Or maybe it was just an excuse to see him for a minute before she went back to her dorm. She didn’t really know the exact reason but she entered his classroom anyway. The lights were off except for the faint glow coming from the other side of the room were his office was. She came in slowly to not scare the holy hell out of him and she lightly knocked on his office door, “Professor Brooks?”
He looked up and smiled, “Audrey! Good to see you! What do you need?”
“I wanted to hand in my um, first draft,” Audrey mumbled, holding the paper out in front of her.
“That wasn’t due for another week,” Professor Brooks took her paper anyway as he said that and he set it down next to his other pile of papers, “I’ll read it when I finish with this work here. You don’t mess around do you?”
Audrey shrugged, totally embarrassed now, “I guess I just like to get things done as soon as possible.”
“That’s a good thing to do of course,” he said, “I didn’t think you’d finish in two days. I must say, I’m excited to read this.”
“Thank you Professor Brooks,” she said.
“But, this tells me you’re not taking my advice,” he stopped her and folded his hands on his desk.
“Well, I…well…um,” Audrey really had no explanation for that other than, “It’s only the first week Professor. I have four years to ya know…get crazy.”
Professor Brooks laughed a bit, “Well, I’ll tell you what. A friend of mine is showing his work at a gallery tomorrow afternoon. Would you like to come with me?”
“An art gallery?” Audrey smiled and nodded faster than she should have, “I would love to. I love art galleries.”
“As do I,” he replied. He pulled a notepad out of his drawer and scribbled an address down on it, “There’s the time and the address. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow Audrey.”
Audrey took the small paper from him and left with it, “Goodnight Professor Brooks!”
“See you tomorrow Audrey,” he called.
