Chapter Two
The three of them met up after their morning classes were over. Jade had some time before she had to leave for work and Audrey and Maya didn’t have classes for a couple of minutes. They were free to quickly discuss their first few hours.
“So how was that creative writing class?” Maya asked. She looked over her schedule, “I have that Professor Winters guy later today. What’s he like?”
“He’s pretty cool,” Jade shrugged, “He scared me and thought it was funny that I dropped my phone.”
Audrey and Maya’s lips quivered as they fought the urge to laugh themselves. Audrey finally contained herself long enough to reply, “Well, it is funny when you get scared.”
“It is not-” Jade raised her hand to stop herself before she got angry, “So enough about me. How were your mornings?”
“I’ve got Professor Gray for English,” Maya said. Jade’s eyes lit up and she grinned, “I’ve heard he’s ******** gorgeous. Is he?”
“Oh don’t tell me you’re gonna be like those girls who huddle together and drool whenever he talks,” Maya imitated the girls, resting her head in her heads and sticking out her tongue, making an “Ahh” sound. Jade smacked her until she stopped and they both laughed together, “No. I don’t even have his class. I have a different guy for English. I’ve just heard he is perfection.”
“He’s pretty good looking,” Maya said, knowing that was a huge understatement. But she didn’t want to appear annoying like those other girls. He seemed to like her more than those other girls so she didn’t want to look crazy in the middle of campus. She turned to Audrey, changing the subject, “And you? Didn’t you have art history?”
“Oh yeah,” Audrey smiled and she folded her hands excitedly under her chin, “I’ve got Professor Brooks. He makes you all excited for his class. And he’s going to be working on this project later on in the semester and he’s going to eventually pick one of his students to work with him.”
“You’d be perfect,” Maya said.
“Yeah. You’re the hardest worker I’ve ever met,” Jade added, “I’d be shocked if he didn’t pick you.”
“I’m trying not to get too excited,” Audrey said. Jade’s phone buzzed and she jumped onto her feet as she turned her alarm off, “I’ve gotta go if I wanna be early to work. Good luck today you guys. Kick a**!”
Jade waved over her shoulder as she ran to the parking lot and into her car. She worked at a bookstore that conveniently wasn’t too far from the school. The only pain was she had to wear slacks and couldn’t wear her sandals. She had to bring her damn work clothes with her. But it was worth it to work at her favorite bookstore. She got a discount on books and a discount for everything at the café. So she could deal with having to run into the bathroom before her shift to change into her nice slacks and tucked in polo shirt. After that, they stuck her in the customer service area where she’d have to try and find books for someone who wasn’t giving her any real details at all and then get mad at her because she can’t find the book. Oh she hated working in that area. But this was better than being without a job so again, it wasn’t worth complaining about since she was employed at a bookstore.
She had her back turned, reading one of her books she always brought with her on slow days like today. People rarely came to this area anyway. It was always slow and boring over here. She felt the counter shake a little when someone placed their books on it, “Excuse me. Can I get some help?”
Jade stuck her bookmark into her book and turned around, “Sure what can I-”
“Jade!” in front of her, with only a wooden counter between them was her ex-boyfriend, David. She ran around the counter and threw her arms around him and he squeezed her tight, “It’s really good to see you.”
“I don’t know why this is such a huge reunion,” Jade laughed, her chin rested on his shoulder, “We saw each other at graduation back in June.”
“Yeah but after we broke up we never talked again,” David said, “Makes me a little sad ya know?”
“Well the whole music thing seemed to keep you busy,” Jade shrugged, “And it didn’t take you long to find a new girlfriend. How is that b***h by the way?”
David’s cheeks turned red and he looked away, “Jane and I didn’t stay together very long.”
“I can imagine,” Jade went back behind the counter and rested her elbows on it, smiling triumphantly, “She never did learn to commit to anyone.”
“Well that was my mistake,” he said, “We never should have broken up Jade.”
“Well your priorities were all screwed up,” Jade dug into a tiny hole in the wooden counter with her fingernail and her shoulders fell, “You chose your music over me. I lived with that for eighteen years of my life but it’s a different feeling when it’s your boyfriend instead of your dad. And besides, we were what, fourteen? High school romances rarely ever last.”
David smiled and rested his elbows on the counter so his face was a few inches away from hers, “I’m not gonna give up on you Jade.”
Jade pushed herself off the counter and folded her arms across her chest and smirked, “I’ll tell you what. I don’t have classes on Friday and that’s my day off. We can go out somewhere then. Will that make you happy?”
“I’m playing a show Friday night,” he said, “Come see me play and then we can hang out afterwards.”
A customer appeared next to David and waited patiently for their conversation to end. Jade sighed and nodded, “Alright. I’ll come. Now scoot, I have a job to do.”
When Maya finished her final class in the late afternoon, she headed straight for the parking lot, sending a quick text to Audrey telling her she was just going to head home instead of waiting for her to talk about their afternoon classes. That conversation could wait. She wanted to study for a bit and then maybe take a nap. It was a very long first day. It was still summertime and she was baking even with shorts and a tank top on. She got into her car and blasted the A/C for a minute while she pulled her hair back into a ponytail. Then she just sat there, enjoying the cool, crisp air before she finally started the car and headed home. When she pulled up her driveway, she found her boyfriend, Frank sitting on the bench on her porch. His eyes lit up when he saw her and he jumped off the bench and ran down to the driveway to throw his arms around her and kiss her like he hadn’t seen her in years, “How was your first day?”
“It was pretty fun! What did you do all day?” Maya said, wrapping her arm around his neck.
“A little of this, a little of that,” Frank shrugged and began leading her towards his car parked in front of her house, “Let’s go hang out. Come on.”
“I’m really tired Frank,” Maya resisted, looking over her shoulder at her house. It was just begging her to go inside and sleep. But Frank tugged a little harder, “Come on. I haven’t seen you all day!”
“Frank…” Maya whined, her eyes still on her house. She finally gave up and loosened up her body so Frank could take her to his car, “Fine. Where are we going?”
“Vivian and Gerard wanted to double with us,” Maya started to resist again, this time pushing him away and shaking her head, “No, no, no, no! You know I don’t like Vivian. I can tolerate most of your friends. But there has to be a line somewhere!”
“Vivian isn’t that bad!” Frank smiled as he practically forced her into the car, “You just have to get to know her.”
“The fact that she’s even in my life is crossing the line,” Maya grumbled as Frank started the car.
“Come on Maya!” Frank said with a pout, “She’s my best friend’s girlfriend! Can’t you try to get along with her?”
“I tried,” Maya crossed her arms and slumped in the seat, “I can’t get along with dumbasses.”
Frank took Maya to the little town center and met up with Gerard and Vivian by the large fountain in the very middle in front of the movie theater. Vivian had recently put obnoxious, bright pink streaks in her hair and had apparently gotten a brand new lip ring that was extra annoying and made her bottom lip protrude. And she didn’t mind red lipstick, but for some reason it was really irritating seeing it on Vivian’s lips. Vivian smiled when she saw Maya and Frank coming and she ran towards them, “Hi you guys! How are you?”
“I’m doing alright,” Frank replied. Vivian hugged Maya tightly but Maya’s body was tense and rigid, refusing to hug her back. Vivian didn’t seem to notice Maya’s anger and led her to the fountain where Gerard still sat, “So how was your first day as a college student?”
“Fine. Just fine,” Maya replied shortly, “I was gonna go home and study because I’m in college you know but Frank just begged me to come,” Maya smiled, feeling the need to rub in the fact that she was a college student and Vivian had probably spent her day getting stoned and maybe hanging out with Gerard. Vivian flinched a bit but kept her smile on her face while the four of them hung out together. This was going to be a long, long night.
Audrey got the text from Maya after their last class that she was just gonna head home. She was ok with that. She hadn’t really had a chance to enjoy being in her dorm room yet. She finally got to have her own space even though she did unfortunately have a roommate. She didn’t mind. Her roommate would have classes tonight so she had the room to herself to look over her school stuff and just relax in the silence of her dorm room.
She walked across campus, surrounded by other busy students trying to rush to get to their next classes. Audrey was glad that wasn’t her at the moment. Her feet were so tired from walking all day long. She was glad to finally be able to sit down for awhile. She ended up passing her art history class just as Professor Brooks was coming out. He stopped for a minute, narrowing his eyes and when he saw who it was he smiled and waved, “Audrey!”
Audrey laughed nervously and came to a stop, “Uh, hi Professor.”
“Where are you headed?” he asked as he locked the door to his classroom.
“To my dorm,” Audrey said, “You’re headed home?”
“That’s right!” he smiled. They stood together for a moment in silence just looking at each other, both of them waiting to say something else. He finally gave in and spoke, “So how did you like your first day?”
“Oh I really liked it,” she said, “It’s a lot different from high school.”
“You’ll get used to it pretty quickly,” he replied, “I hope you have a lot of fun during college. They can be some of the best years of your life you know.”
“So I’ve heard.”
“College isn’t just about academics you know,” he explained, “You have to get out and do things sometimes. Of course you need to study hard. It’s important but you can’t stay at home and study all day long. If you don’t get out and do something fun once in awhile, this place will eat you alive.”
Audrey wrapped the chain of her necklace around her finger and bit her bottom lip. That’s pretty much what she’d done during high school and she wasn’t sure she’d be able to change that during her college years. What Professor Brooks had said made her really nervous. She thought focusing entirely on her studies might put her ahead of everyone else. But this had a chance of dragging her down?
“Oh…well, that makes sense,” she said, “I’ll consider that. Thanks Professor. I’ll see you Wednesday.”
“I look forward to seeing your work this semester,” Professor Brooks ended with that and he gave her one last smile before he walked away. Audrey groaned loudly and started walking towards her dorm, her mood going completely south. She knew her Professor was just trying to offer her friendly advice but she really, really wished he hadn’t said it. Because he was right and she knew it.
I know there were some impatient people waiting (HINT HIIIINT) but boom. Here you go wink heart
