The sun was lowering in the distance, its great radiance fading slowly as it sank deeper into the horizon. The blue sea of the sky turned to a brilliant orange, hoping to light the world while the sun slept, but as time went on, the orange faded into black, and was sprinkled with white stars that gleamed and shone high above. No moon rose to greet the night sky and stars, so darkness soon devoured the land in a rage, eating up all it could. Agni grimaced at the black curtain that hung over the land, and quickened his pace, each step becoming wider than the last. "The sun wakes up after me, then goes to sleep before me! How lazy." he mumbled grudgingly as he walked down the beaten dirt path. He combed his thick black hair with his fingers, and breathed a low sigh. "Did they start without me?" he wondered. It was his eighteenth birthday, and it meant he was finally a man of his own. He could finally join his father on the voyages that so many boasted of. Every year, he would ask if he was ready, and his father would only laugh, shake his head slowly, and tell him to wait until he was older. Last year, when he asked, his father had told him that next year would be his year.
