Third Encounter
Kit and Mora stared in shock at the sight before them. There was someone actually slipping a sword down their throat. Mora grasped onto Kit's sleeve looking more then a little freaked out.
"Kit? Um...Can we move on?"
She asked quietly. Smiled at her younger sister, she looped her arm around the girls shoulder, leading her away from the sword-eating man. The main tent was their last destination, and there were several interesting things along the way. Though she wouldn't necessarily call someone sliding a sword down their throat interesting. Just slightly, morbidly disturbing.
So far, they had briefly stopped at a fortunetellers tent -because Mora had been listening to other peoples fortunes but had drug Kit off in a hurry when the fortune tell tired to tell theirs- watched a mini performance put on by the children on the circus -they had all been adorable in their little costumes- and watched with interest as a 'Mage' made his assistant turn into an elephant.
Kit had no idea how to explain away the last one, she still didn't know where the elephant had come from as it couldn't have possibly, really squeezed out of the three by three box, but she was trying to ignore that. Maybe the entire thing had been a hologram?
"Where to now? Oh, they have a mirror walk and a 'Snake Den.' You wanna try one of those?"
She asked her sister, smiling at the way the younger girl grasped onto her arm and stopped them, her gaze thoughtful.
"Why don't we do the 'Snake Den' first? Then I'll have something to walk through to calm me down afterwards."
She replied, nodding her head. Her little sister was actually terrified of snakes and serpentine creatures, probably because she had been attacked by one when she was little and never gotten over it, but she was trying to conquer that fear. Nodding, Kit lead her across the way, through the crowd. She wasn't sure when it had stopped raining, she was just glad that the ground beneath them was thick with grass and not mud. She hated mud.
They walked into the 'Snake Den', which was a closed off canvas tent, lit with green, eerie lights and just the slightest bit dim, and waited in line for a total of three minutes before a crowd rushed out and they were ushered in. The ushers themselves looked a little scaly, and Kit marveled at the quality of their make up as she passed. Mora tried not to shiver.
Smiling at her sister's tense shoulders, she slipped her arm around Mora's waist. Within an instant, her sister clutched onto her, her eyes watery and her hands grasping hand fulls of Kit's jacket. and they hadn't even seen any snakes yet.
'Maybe it's the sound of slithering?'
Kit mused thoughtfully, eying the green lights they passed that were set up strategically. When they came to what Kit assumed was the middle of the tent, they were stopped by a sign bearing usher. The sign itself read 'Enter at risk' which made Kit frown. Enter at risk? What exactly did they do that made it risky?
"I've changed my mind, I can't do this, lets go."
Mora muttered, quivering. Kit shook her head silently. She wasn't going to let her sister back out of this one. Instead, she tugged Mora past the ushers and through the curtain. There was a red velvet rope set up, and behind it, a lit, upraised stage. Someone sat in the middle of it, cloaked and mysterious looking, and something brushed against Kit's feet as people piled in after her. Mora tensed and squeaked, her head bowed to the floor. When Kit followed her gaze, she was almost shocked.
There were all sorts of snakes slithering around the grass, and several of the fellow watchers hustled to get out of the tent as soon as possible. Kit and Mora stayed where they were only because Kit didn't want to risk stepping on one of the animals. Mora was simply too terrified to move.
"This was a horrible idea."
Mora whispered, her voice cracking. Kit could feel her trembling, her thin arms desperately clutching at Kit in her fear.
'Maybe this wasn't a good idea?'
She mused thoughtfully. The snakes seemed to make up the entire surface of the floor, so moving carefully would be difficult if Kit was going to get the out of there. The the cloaked figure moved, the snakes stilled, and Kit lost all the breath in her body when the cloak fell away.
