I was never much one for franchise tie in novels. As a result, the only Star trek novelization I ever bothered with was Stitch in Time. This is because Garak is one of if not the most interesting of the star trek characters to my particular interests and way of thinking. Klingons may be sexy, but it's the Cardassians who have the most fascinating culture. It's not a pleasant culture to live in, mind, but it's complex and well designed both as a culture and for dramatic interest. So rumor had it Andrew Robinson had a short story in Prophecy and Change and my library had it, so i checked it out. I haven't quite reached the Robinson story yet.
It's been slow going. It turns out, that while DS9 was my favorite of the star trek franchises, I've hardly thought about it since it went off the air, unlike, say B5, which I think about quite often still. I do remember the main characters, whom I genuinely liked as a group, but it turns out whole sections of plot are barely remembered, particularly the early season Bajoran politics. I'm am having to scramble to fill in the missing bits with context and shreds of memory. It's easier later on with bits that were more memorable, like Grilka or Terok Nor, but I'm sure if I'd seen these more recently, I'd be picking up more nuance. It's also not helping that the writers are less interested in the characters that I cared about like Garak, Sisko, Warf, and Odo, though there is a reasonable amount of Kira. It's very Jadzia Dax heavy. On paper, I should have loved Dax, but I often found Jadzia boring and bland. For better or worse, I just didn't care that much until she hooked up with Warf, when the Klingon culture stuff got interesting. Also, the quality varies wildly. The first story and several others were slower than zombies playing monopoly. Luckily, further in, the quality is much higher. I'm hoping the Robinson story is worth it.
