Awry was born, pigeon-toed, to a distant cousin of Prince Carbrey. Rather than dealing with the shame of having born a pigeon-toed son (too ashamed to even attempt surgery), Awry's parents sent him away to be jester at Carbrey's court. He has lived there since age 4.
Being a jester, he has no fear to tell Carbrey or any other noble exactly what he thinks - as long as it is done in a comic manner, it is within the lines of his job. Awry is one of the few people who will attempt to strike up a conversation with Carbrey and seemingly takes no offense to the Prince's holier-than-thou attitude. He is the only person Carbrey would consider a friend and he knows it, though he barely qualifies. However he remains determined to get in good with the Prince, thinking that no one should feel as alone as he knows the prince must feel.
He is an excessive flirt, making a pass at pretty much anything that moves. All in good fun. He especially like flirting with stuffy older nobles just to see the reactions he gets.
A note about his hat - the Prince makes him wear it, even though he hates it. It's a big thing between them. The Prince actually decides on all of Awry's clothes.
His original last name has been discarded and Carbrey added the "Marcellus Eryx Constantius" part to it.
