Chapter Two: Wild boy/ Spring 8th
Elli woke up with her normal bed head. She walked over to her mirror and gently brushed her hair as her grandmother and brother still slept. She walked over to her grandmother and her dresser to get on her work dress. She yawned as she looked at the clock. Ten till eight. Well she could go say good morning to Trent or she could go pick some herbs. She said hello to Trent every day, why not she go get a herb or two for him.
She walked down the road and rubbed her eyes a little while yawning. Why couldn’t she sleep in like everyone else in this village? She made the normal turn at the black smiths and another turn between Yodel Ranch and Chicken Ranch. She walked into the woods where the woodman, Gotz, lived. He was kind of to himself and came out once every now and then. The only time she had really seen him was when they were having one of their cooking holidays. She picked her normal herb that was used for her grandmother behind Gotz’s huge pile of lumber wood, but all of the other herbs were gone. Shed even looked by the old weeping willow where there was almost always herbs, but not today. She gave the ground a puzzled look at she looked up the hill where Mothers Lake was. “There’s got to be some herbs up there.” She walked up the hill. She breathed heavily as she reached the top to see a figure hunched over picking the herbs. She noticed that it started to stand. She didn’t know what to do so she hid behind a large oak. It was Adam.
“s**t… he gets up earlier than I do.” She just stood behind the tree. She felt somewhat like a stalker but she didn’t really care, and she doubted Adam would too. He seemed to be humming something as he was picking the herbs and setting them in their cases. He seemed so happy, despite that it was probably eight something in the morning. He then looked up toward the oak. Elli slumped lower by the tree. “Crap, crap, crap. Did he see me?!” Elli looked back around the oak to see Adam sitting down and eating what seemed like toast, jam, and some milk. Her stomach growled. She looked at her watch to see what time it was. A quarter till nine. “Oh shoot!!!! I’ve really been spying on him this long?!” She got up from the tree and sped walked down the hill. She started to run to the clinic looking behind her every now and then to see if Adam had saw her and followed her. She slammed the door to the clinic as Trent gave her a look of what the hell is your problem? She smiled as she panted, as she plopped behind her desk in her chair.
Later that afternoon
Elli spun in her chair when she saw Adam walk in with his bag of herbs. “I wonder if he saw me earlier…” She kept her head low as he walked over to Trent’s office, to get paid. He soon came out. His bag empty, and his right pocket bulging from his amount of loot he had collected. He stopped before he went out the door and walked over to her. “What is he doing?” He stood in front of her desk.
The upper part of his cheeks where slightly red. Elli couldn’t tell if it was sunburn or if he was blushing. “Afternoon.” He smiled. “Afternoon. May I help you?” She stared at him. “Um… Well… I was picking herbs this morning and I saw these flowers and I wanted to pick one for you… since we’re friends and all.” He shifted his boots slowly. “I love these flowers! Thank you so much Adam!” She smiled as she felt the upper part of her cheeks blush a little too. He quickly dashed out of the Clinic a few moments later.
Towards the end of work, Elli was curious what Adam’s Ranch looked like. Elli said good bye to the doctor as she closed and locked the door from the outside. She arrived at the turn between the black smiths. Should she really go down or should she chicken out and go home. She took a deep breath as she walked towards the ranch.
She looked around the ranch. It looked nothing like the others she had seen. This one was more… plain. There was a small section at the end of the field that crops seemed to be growing. Then a large part of the ranch was fields, and then in the very far corner, it looked like something else was growing, but she couldn’t tell what it was.
“Hey you.” Elli jumped at hearing a voice. She looked to her side and saw Adam not too far away brushing his cow. “What brings you here?” He smiled as the cow’s tail swayed and it seemed to moo happily. “Um… I just wanted to see what your farm looks like.” He got up and patted the cow on her back. “And?” She chuckled slightly. “It looks great.” He had the curves at the end of his lips as he opened up the door and rang a bell for the cow to come inside. She slowly stood up and walked into the barn. Adam slammed the door shut behind her and locked it. “Wild dogs come out at night. One got my sheep’s legs. Poor girl.” He lifted up his cap and twisted it behind his head. “Wanna help me gather up the chickens?” He laughed as he said the words. “I guess so. Where are they?” He pointed into the field “In there.”
He laughed some more. Elli just stared at the grass. “You’ve got to be kidding me!” Adam stopped laughing a little to talk to her. “Nah, I’m messing with you. They come out when you call their names. Watch.” Elli got on her knees as she watched the grass. Adam yelled the name “Emily” and shortly out came a chicken. She was beautiful. Her feather’s were so white and she was so fluffy. She laughed as it clucked and stared at her. “Here, hold gently under her. You can stroke her and that’ll make her like you more.”
He handed Elli the chicken as he called two other names and the chickens slowly came out. Emily stared at Elli. She didn’t know what to do with the chicken, so she slowly raised her hand on its head, and started to pet it. Emily seemed to be enjoying herself. Adam carried the other two under his arms. “Let’s put these ladies in their coop.” He continued to laugh as he kicked open the bottom half of the door and tapped the chickens to go inside. They quickly clucked and ran inside to their food and started to peck at it. Emily squirmed and jumped out of Elli’s arms. Elli screamed and fell down on her a**, as Emily dashed inside to the food and Adam closed the door.
He helped her up as she brushed off her dress. Elli sighed then she remembered something. “Hey. Why did you give me the flower this morning? I mean I understand that you said because we’re friends but…” “You’re still curious?” Adam replied back looking away. Elli slowly nodded. He kept his head low. He got closer to her. She felt her heart bounding but she didn’t know why. He spoke softly “Because I saw them and they looked nice. And besides I gave one to all the other girls.” He stuck out his tongue.
That royal jerk! She didn’t know why he was but that jerk! He sighed finally from laughing. “Alright I better take a shower and get off to bed. You too little missy.” He smiled. “You want me to walk you home?” She started to walk with her nose somewhat in the air. “I’m fine.” She was upset at him but she still didn’t know why. “Alright. Talk to you tomorrow.” He waved as she walked away. Elli got home and plopped on her bed. She yelled in her pillow. At least tomorrow was a new day. She flipped over and decided to take a small nap.
