The Minister for Agriculture was on an inspection tour of the collective farms. He arrived at one run by a Comrade Ivanov.
'What do you feed the hens on?' the minister asks him.
'We buy in grain,' replies Ivanov.
The minister was angry.
'How dare you when there's a grain shortage in the country? Fire him!' the minister ordered.
They fired him.
The minister arrived at the next collective farm, administered by a Ukrainian, Galushko.
'What do you feed the hens on?' the minister asks him.
'We buy in corn,' says Galushko.
The minister flew into a rage.
'How dare you! We are buying that corn from Canada with gold. Have him charged!' orders the minister.
They have him charged.
The minister arrived at the next collective farm, administered by Comrade Rabinovich.
'What do you feed the hens on?' asks the minister.
'Comrade Minister,' replies Rabinovich, 'we give them a rouble each and tell them to feed themselves.'
