His SPECIAL is from my proposed arrangements to have Fo2's Talking Deathclaws be an available species, which was based on their cannon info: (@ 3rd Perk achievement: His Total = 50: +42 from Racial Base, +2 from the Scholarly Trait and +6 At his current rank)
Even with Scholarly's bonus, I wouldn't be reaching the in-game SPECIAL counts found with Gruthar or the final-stage of Goris for a while. For Gruthar's 52 I need 2 more ranks (Senior Scribe) and for Goris' 58 I need 8 more ranks (High Sage); the only ranks above that are Elder/Council/General, any of which would put me at 60.
Though I've considered Recon for an occupation (I'd like Espionage, but job requirements make it impossible given his species and personal honesty), I went with R&D because (A) that's what he would personally lean furthest towards and (B) his education/intelligence allows him to think/theorize/direct for projects as needed; though he'd be dependent on others for tasks requiring tiny human fingers.
I also have issues with the 'tag' skills, as they generally focus on ability to perform, not just understand, and his performance is severely limited by his form. (Understanding of language, science and other educational fields is limited when it comes down to practice purely on grounds of his limitations as a deathclaw.) I'm considering changing that list to show the skills he has furthered and is best at in regards to both understand and performance of technique. This would likely leave him with Unarmed but trade (Medicine and Science) for (Sneak and Outdoorsman).
Gyrldrysk's Profile
Name: Gyrldrysk
Rank: Journeyman Scribe
Medals: N/A
Occupation: Research and Development
Race: Talking Deathclaw (3rd generation; Goris' son)
Age: 23 (Hatched 2254/09/02)
Sex: Male
Appearance:
Form: While Gyldrysk’s anatomical parts are identical to those of other deathclaws, a variety of his features veer noticeably from their general range of physical traits. He is extremely small by deathclaw standards, a mere 6’4” when standing in the standard crouched and quadrupedal posture; this assumes exclusion of any additional height provided by the spines of bone that protrude along his vertebral column. The spines themselves are solid, yet somewhat flexible, varying between 1 to 17 inches in length and presenting the first just behind his brow, which initiates the trail down his back and stops at the same thoracic vertebrae where his inferiormost spine-attached ribs meet (equivalent of T10 on humans). He has, through observation and tail-use, learned to balance himself in a more human posture and can comfortably stand upright at 10’3”, meeting what would be a normal height for his species. His overall musculature appears much more compact, making him sleeker and more firmly balanced. Its end affect appears curiously similar to mammalian structures, possibly explaining why he is able to imitate bipedal postures.
Countering that, a number of features present are so reptilian in nature that the end result, as he jokingly muses, leaves him resembling what Theropods might have looked like had they survived and evolved long enough without losing their land-dwelling and carnivorous orientations. These features include his narrow, lengthy and muscular maw, the aforementioned spines and the three horns protruding anteriorly from his face (with the two longest located above respective eye sockets, and the third being a much shorter protrusion above and between his nostrils). The impressive length and musculature of his tail, as well as the overall reptilian overtones of his face and limbs combine with his more mammalian features as a form that represents both and fits amongst neither; hardly surprising given his species’ genetic roots. (click for a visual example of Gyrldrysk).
Color: Gyrldrysk’s coloration, like his form, expresses numerous uncommon phenotypic portrayals. His thick, durable flesh is a mild ashen gray with a pale, bluish-tint that appears to provide a dim yet vibrant translucent glow; much akin to that of his father. Unlike his father, however, he has spots of a potent reddish-orange coloration, akin to that of a tangerine, which appear as though painted atop the more constant bluish-gray pigmentation of his hide. These are scattered along his muscular back, around his legs, over the backs of his hands and up along his arms.
His eyes are a strong yellowish-orange, almost a charred version of the color seen in uncooked egg yolks, with significantly darker, venous lines stretching towards the pupil. His pupil extends down the median of his eye as a pitch-black slit with jagged edges, its shape resembling Rorschach’s ink-blots or an old-fashioned keyhole. In context of his eye as a whole, the yellowish ‘whites’ appear as a root-ridden surface, with his pupil being where that surface had been torn open to reveal the abyss expanding below (click for a visual example of his eye).
Sound: His voice, though not always quiet, is a soft croak; well-bodied and with a resounding semi-squeak. This provides it with modest tone, significant enough that he can replicate the emotional expression often heard in a human’s natural vocalizations. As human chords can cover a variety of pitches, his can change by dropping as low as the deep and terrifying guttural growl commonly associated with his wild kin from the West Coast (click for higher-pitched auditory example of his ‘toned’ voice).
Personality:
Gyrldrysk, like most, can be described as being many things and holding many traits. For all that he has been born with and further pushed himself to learn, grasp and be capable of… he is himself; he has been and intends to be nothing else. If asked who he is, he will consistently state his name and deliver any other details purely as additional titles provided on the basis of context. This is because he understands that, in most cases where a human asks someone who they are, the request is not made expecting an answer that delivers any significant degree of satisfaction for how encompassing the question sounds. When the Brotherhood asked this of him upon his recruitment, he took a few seconds of silence before deciding to answer them with more than he gave most. “I am Gyrldrysk, son of Goris, himself the only living descendant of my grandfather Gruthar. I am a scholar, simultaneously a student eager in naivety and sage candid in convictions; I am a fighter, simultaneously seeking annihilation and ascendance for every opponent. I am one who chooses to comprehend instead of judge, that my knowledge might be whole, and react instead of act, that my efforts might be earned. Soon, I may be to you a devotedly obedient yet consistently questioning Brother; such is already the case, but we have not yet taken the steps to realize that.”
Despite his fearsome form, philosophical leanings and educational drive, however, Gyrldrysk’s predisposed to a number of personal quirks which leave him, in the eyes of those who have known him, adorable. He’s personally never quite caught on, as despite the obvious differences that left him segregated amongst company throughout his travels beyond his pack, he’s always thought of himself as being rather ‘normal’. Regardless, be it his combined humanity with an animal form, his maintained innocence despite experience, the sound of his voice or whatever seems to make most people want to pet him, he comes across as being undeniably cute.
Background:
Pack: Goris knew, from the moment the oddly colored egg was lain, that its occupant would grow and develop with features similar to his own. As Gyrldrysk matured, the impression became supported by the youth’s frequent displays of rapidly maturing awareness. While Goris held no favoritism amongst his pack, he was not so fixated on equality as to cost any of his spawn what opportunities they could use. As such, Gyrldrysk was provided with a uniquely comprehensive education and extensive stimulation for his budding creativity throughout his younger years, effectively furthering his rapidly expanding mental prowess. While this more than satisfied his needs coming into adulthood, and despite the irreplicable state of bliss experienced amongst his kin, he began to feel that something was missing. The feeling hit prior to his sixth birthday and was mild enough to ignore at its onset, but did not bide its time in intensifying to an alarming severity. Gyrldrysk soon found himself more conflicted than he had ever thought he could feel, for though he would never want to abandon his family, it seemed as though something extremely essential had been lost and needed to be found.
His father, Goris, knew of the unspoken change, recognizing the feeling’s signs with more familiarity than his son could have known to expect. Lead by that understanding, Goris approached his son and ordered Gyrldrysk to leave the pack; not forever, but for as long as he needed to satisfy his unmentioned hunger. He was welcome to return any time he wished, and equally welcome to depart again with the same liberty. All that was required was that he truly remembered his family, never forgetting all that they were. As a gift and symbol from his father, representing the love held and approval given, Gyrldrysk was handed a set of old, heavy robes which he could use in his travels to conceal himself from the sight of men; robes his father had once used for the same purpose.
World: Gyrldrysk left, coming to wander to, through and beyond settlements of such contrasting natures as to put him in awe. His surprise, however, was not primarily with their contrast but instead the intricacies that so drove his understanding to flourish. As he traveled, he steadily grew in recognizing with increasing clarity the natural transformations between what and why, where and how, pieces and wholes and how all of those things seemed to tie together apart from and amongst themselves. More definable intellectual pursuits include his studies of society, culture and politics as well as more scientific fields of knowledge; from the numerous interactions within a singular organism to those that determined possible and impossible in context of that organism’s interaction with its environment. While his fingers, greater in diameter than an adolescent's wrist, were too large to easily operate most human tools, he also learned to adjust his movements with a coordinated, articulate precision that enabled him to maneuver their tips through numerous procedures once believed impossible for a deathclaw. These learned tasks included typing, precise incisions (such as with superficial surgical cuts or severing a wire) and, by dipping a claw-tip into ink, handwriting. Granted, to this day he requires thick parchment or similarly tough material for the purpose of writing as, though his touch can be delicate, it still involves the tip of a claw capable of piercing most armors. Beyond that, his speed at any of these tasks is also hindered by the unique demands for caution that his claws offer, further complicated by their size-oriented limits. (Examples: only two fingers per hand can fit on a keyboard when typing, and they are too large to meet invasive surgical needs, limiting him to superficial ones for the sake of the patient; this list goes on)
While the many years, just passing a dozen, offered immeasurable benefits that he could not have gained amongst his pack, Gyrldrysk had noted in his travels a different sort of hunger rising within him. As so much of his time had been spent alone, he had begun to suffer from the rarity of anything resembling the deep, lasting and comprehensive relationships that his pack had held for him. By the time he had realized the new feeling's source, he had become distanced from the desired remedy by nearly the entire longitudinal breadth of the former United States, and found himself yearning for something supplemental that might offset the drain of his unmet needs. Having both heard of and personally observed the potentially admirable values present in a nearby organization known as The Obsidian Brotherhood, he moved for the chance that, with luck surpassing what he usually had, it might offer something to combat his deepening loneliness and give him the strength he needed to make the journey home.
TOB: Though the Brotherhood's initial offerings were incredibly skeptical and shallow in comparison to the innate affection and understanding he had amongst his birth family, he came to find that it was not necessarily an inferior offer. For him, as for all individual members, were available the earnable advantages of the organization's resources; from medicine and technology to unique relationships and opportunities. The Brotherhood's unity was also surprisingly effective, its functions and conditional decisions being undeniably advantageous in the context of its conditions, challenges and aims. While it was true that the Brotherhood’s family system was drastically lacking much he could find amongst his pack, its compensating strengths satisfied him. Despite the continued desire to see his brothers, sisters, mother and father again, he did not regret his decision to join the Obsidian Brotherhood. From his time starting as an operative in reconnaissance to now as a scientist in research and development, he has seen nothing regrettable enough to counteract how worthwhile it has been; and intends on staying a good while longer.
