- Awkwardly Shy - One of the first noticeable characteristics about Evangeline is that she's very shy. Socializing just isn't one of her specialties, so she's often very awkward around other people. Her shyness can almost be crippling, as she hates embarrassing herself. So she's very anxious and doesn't like to leave her house very often. One could say she's very close to being agoraphobic. But there's no way anyone can mistake her shyness for arrogance or coldness, because its apparent she wants to talk to the other people of the village but simply can't find the proper words.
Obsessive and Excessive - To make up for her extreme social anxiety, Evangeline developed a slight case of OCD. She can be very obsessive and has many compulsions to help her deal with her constant fearful thoughts. Most of the habits she has are personal rituals or unconscious actions due to her obsession with not being embarrassed in social situations. They calm her down and makes it easier for her to go through life. And when she has an interest, Evangeline can be excessive in her pursuit of knowledge about it.
Knowledgeable Intellectual - One of Evangeline's interests happens to be the books in her library. Because of this obsession with her books, Evangeline is one of the most knowledgeable people in the city (though she would never admit to it). She's very intelligent and is able to apply what she's learned for her books to her everyday life. Sometimes, she feels as though her knowledge is a bit false, as she think she really only has a good memory, but other times she feels as though its all she has.
Humble and Meek - The last thing one can call her is proud. Evangeline is a very humble girl who doesn't like to assert herself as a know-it-all, especially not in an aggressive way. She's selective in receiving compliments and hates to feel as though she's better than others. Sometimes, it can seem as though Evangeline simply isn't confident in herself and her abilities at all. But she doesn't have low self-esteem; she's just very polite in the way she shows off her abilities.
Ridiculously Clumsy - And it seems, to offset that intelligent demeanor is the fact that she can't seem to hold on to anything. Her slippery fingers drops almost everything: dishes, books, glasses, animals, etc. And there doesn't seem to be a moment where Evangeline isn't falling down. She's the most unathletic person in the entire town...maybe even in the entire world. So she doesn't like to do too many activities that require her to do something physical; she's always afraid she's going to mess it up.
Helpfully Kind - Evangeline is the type of girl who always wants to help, even when her help is completely unneeded. She's very friendly and kind, and is always willing to go out of her way for another person or animal. She loves nothing more than to suggest books to people that might help them in their current situations. She tries to become more social by doing this, though she feels as though she fails more often than she helps. Evangeline tries her best to never speak ill of anyone on the island, even if they anger her.
Secret Drunkard - She has a secret dark side...she likes to drink. Though Evangeline is a woman of humility and moderation, when one drinks several cups of wine a day, one is bound to get drunk every now and then. On those rare occasions when Evangeline gets a little tipsy, her social anxiety is thrown to the wind. She can get a little playful and boastful, and sometimes seems to be a completely different person. She hates when she gets drunk...but can't seem to actually stop drinking.
Spacey Daydreamer - Evangeline is a very thoughtful person and when she isn't reading and writing, she can be found just sitting around, thinking. She has a tendency to space out, sometimes at inappropriate times. Because she doesn't get to talk to many of the people in town very often, her daydreams are what keeps her company most of the time. Evangeline believes that one day, her dreams will come true, so she continues to think about them.
◈◈◈ xxx rewind and restart
- Before Birth
Walter Powell was born to a long line of scientists in Midnight Valley. He put a lot of emphasis on knowledge and learning all that he could about the world. He studied the Spellflowers, but didn't get to learn as much about them as he would have liked. One day, an archaeologist named Mei Hino came to Midnight Valley to study the beautiful flowers as well, and she visited Walter often to find out what he knew. The two of them fell in love and got married. A few years later, they had Evangeline Mary Powell. However, the Spellflowers disappeared soon after and with them went Mei. She said she had to pursue her career and would visit Walter and Evangeline every break she could. But without the Spellflowers, she had no job in Midnight Valley.
Younger Days
After Mei's departure, Walter became a bit obsessed with his work, often leaving young Evangeline to entertain herself. He did not neglect the child, but he felt as though he didn't have enough time for her. She was confined to the house most of the day, because Walter didn't want her to wander off where he couldn't see her, so she had to busy herself with indoor activities. Thus her love of books and writing was born. She grew up reading about the adventures she could never have and wrote about what she dreamed up. It became her goal to read all the books in the world.
Teenage Years
Books became a large part of little Evangeline's life and was something she dedicated herself to. However, she was often shunned by her peers for being a "bookworm", a "nerd", a "dork"...and she found that it wasn't necessarily because of her love of books but her inability to socialize. Living most of her young life separated from the other children made her awkward and out of touch with her peers. So she withdrew and mainly kept to herself. When she was 15, her father died from a heart attack, which she assumes was due to his excessive workload. Midnight Valley was falling apart because of a lack of revenue...all because of the Spellflowers her father was studying. Her father's death forced her to have to socialize with others so that she could get by. Because of this, Evangeline developed compulsions to help her deal with her excessive anxiety when it comes to socializing. To make a living for herself, she opened a library by herself.
Present Day
During a town meeting, the Witch proposed bringing back the Spellflowers to save Midnight Valley. So Evangeline began to order more books about the flowers so that she could study them like her father once did. She wanted to help the town she grew up in more than anything else. The next day, a strange man came to town and the Witch called him the descendant of the goddess who could make the Spellflowers return! Evangeline continues her personal research and tries to give the Descendant as much information as possible...but he doesn't seem to really want it.
Future Dreams
Evangeline dreams to one day have the biggest, most expansive library in the world. She wants a copy of every book in her collection and she wants to read each and every one of them. And although her mother still comes to visit every now and then, she wishes to bring the Spellflowers back so that her mother will come stay in Midnight Valley permanently. Evangeline misses her family and although she knows she can't bring her father back, she at least wants to have her mother. She also wants to be able to comfortably open herself up to the people of the village and so constantly forces herself to go out and talk to her fellow villagers. Secretly, Evangeline hopes to become a good wife to a good man and promises herself that she would not do to him what her mother did to her poor father.
