Notes From Gaia
Random thoughts from inside Gaia
Development Update -- Special Weekend Edition
Some stuff that came up last week:

- There was a short outage on the 17th -- it was caused by a hardware failure on a switch. The site didn't go completely down, but there were some web and memcache servers behind the switch, so the site was slower (and appeared to be down for some people).
- The towns (EDIT: and rallies, too, same code changes) fixes went pretty well, but they caused quite a bit of lag due to the amount of processing that was going on client side. We'll be pushing out a fix early next week that should reduce the amount of lag.

Thanks Pan! I was wondering what went wrong...

I hope you guys fix Towns up so that it shines again, without the shadows of the scriptors....>.>

Me and my sister were both sitting around wondering why one of us had gaia working while the other didn't. XD

It basically ended with 'Gaia hates you ufufufu.'

Oh yeah, I had my bf check on his computer when I couldn't get onto gaia.

Thanks for all of your hard work! heart

Never noticed the outage, but thanks for advising...I know many users freak out over stuff like that and cry for you guys to release a site wide announcement explaining what happened, when it's not necessary...the SF regs (and others) will certainly point to this entry to spread the word...

Otherwise, right on for towns...and yay for fixing the lag. Keep up the great work you and your team...

Love your updates, can't wait for towns to be fixed all the way again.

Still can't see my MyGaia overview/feeds page, I'm using the latest version of Firefox with Windows XP. The page loads, but the overview isn't there, just the links at the bottom. When I visit a different tab within MyGaia it works fine, including Aquarium. Just checked IE, and it works there. Any idea what it could be? I don't have this problem with any other website...

captcha: devised luster =) Captchas are fun~

Edit: Issue resolved, another user informed me it was a problem with ABP. Glad that's solved!

There are some threads on this topic with the lags. I suggest checking them out . I hope the fix are with rallies as well sorry if i missed a part that said that.

Ooooh, that's what that was. Thanks for fixing it!

So, I'm pretty sure someone is aware of this (because of all the threads about it in Q&A), but I just want to mention it to make sure.
Wishlists aren't working. No pictures show up, just red Xs. And the item's names don't show up either.

Thanks so much Pan! <3 I am so glad Towns are getting a touch of 'reconstruction', it'll be nice to feel safe on there again. Tell everyone they're doing a great job! heart

Processing on the client side? With respect, I have reservations when ever I hear that. Anything done on the client can and will be used by botters and exploiters; therefore no significant operation should be trusted to the client. I understand that moving operations off the server can reduce lag for the community by distributing the processing required, but I hope you were all exceedingly careful in what functions you've delegated.

Bleck. Switch failures. I know how those go. You're lucky it only lasted a short period of time. I had to deal with one that knocked out almost an entire network for three days... *shudders*

EDIT: Now that I think back, I remember the outage on Gaia. Man you guys got the place back up real fast. High five for that!

Yay for town fixes heart

Umm, I have a question about GIM. I tried using it on a multi-protocol IM program, but for some reason it wouldn't log in. sad Is there a help page to this somewhere?

commentCommented on: Sat Feb 28, 2009 @ 01:01am
@Necro:
Unfortunately, GIM currently does not support multi-protocol clients. However, there are a few users that have been pushing for it and trying to get it working themselves. This is the thread: http://gaiaonline.com/forum/from_feed/external-im-program-support/t.45131337_recent/?_gaia_t_=626
