chapter 1
deijo faces naga. they've been battling for a while now, but silent as the night. they are unseen and unheard as they move, stricking back and forth.
D: you won't escape naga! just give up! give me the power and i promise...i won't kill your darling son like i killed your husband.
N: you won't touch my boy Deijo!
she lunges at him again. the fight is raging while inside, a 5 year old boy sleeps soundly in his room.
As naga fights a soft yellow aura glows around her. she and Deijo aer both visibly exhausted. every hit either of them makes is countered by the opposite. naga cuts Deijo's side, but he grabbed her wrist and threw her. she flipped around and corrected her landing.
Deijo: *holding his side* Damn You!!
nagako took advantage of the moment to lunge again, hoping it would be too much for deijo to handle. he, however had been holding back in an attempt to force nagako to give up the power she had hidden away. nagako was right, it was too much for deijo. he reacted without thinking or hesitating and pulled a short bladed dagger out as she reached him. nagako fell to the ground. the aura around her began to fade and her eyes started to grow dim.
N: now you'll never kno-
a soft bell chimed from around nagako's neck.
inside the house the little boy woke instantly. he knew the sound of that bell, his mother told him it was unique and that it was different than all other bell sounds, and he knew that he needed to hide. his parents had taught him his whole life that that sound is a warning. the small scared child ran and hid in the spot his mother had made for him, to protect him where no one would see.
Deijo made his way to the house, leaving nagako's body outside on the ground. he scoured the house looking for the boy, but to no avail. he knew nagako and her husband had used their auras to hide the boy. he knew it was hopeless. still he searched, hoping to, instead, find the power he needed.
after hours of searching he gave up. it was nearly dawn, and he didn't want to take the chance of being seen come the morning hours.
he left.
the little boy sat in his hiding place for hours, listening to Deijo ransack the house. he was terrified. after the house was silent the boy crawled out of his hiding place and, on shaking knees, searched the house looking for his mother and father.
he went to their room and saw his father's body lying on the bed, lifeless. he began to cry, but he wasn't sure as to why. he didn't understand his father was dead, but something inside him knew this was a bad thing.
when he couldn't wake his father he went to look for his mom. he searched everywhere in the house, but she was no where to be found. he went out to the dojo his mother ran. as he entered the yard he saw her body on the ground. he ran to her and tried to wake her up too. he shook her shoulders and cried forr her, but she didn't answer.
he lay donw next to her, crying, and hugging her he fell asleep next to her.
a few hours later some of nagako's students came for morning practice. the saw the boy and his mother and ran to their side. they realized the boy was still alive, and that he was uninjured. they picked him up and took him away from his mother and into his room. they called the police and stayed with the sleeping boy.
chapter 2
13 years later, the boy, Shogo, is grown. he works late at night in a bar. all he remembers of that night was that his parents were killed in his home, and for some reason he was spared. he can't recall hiding, or any of the events leading up to or directly following that day.
one night as he clears tables he notices a young girl staring at him.
S: hello miss, is there something i can get you?
M:.......
after a few minutes shogo retreats to the back to wash the dishes, uncomfortable. when he emerges a while later he is relieved to see she has gone.
the next night, around the same time, the girl is in the same seat, staring at shogo agian. he smiles kindly at her.
S: miss, can i help you with something?
i'm the only one who works here late at night like this, so if you lokoing for someone, i can leave a note so they will know you've come.
M:........
an old man walks in and sits at the bar
S: hello sir, cna i get you something to drink?
OM: yes, scotch on the rocks please.
shogo prepares the man's drink, then heads to the back to wash the dishes again. in his absence:
M: is he the one you are looking for sir?
OM: we'll see. they've been spotted, they are coming this way. for him or us i don't know, but they'll be here soon.
M: should i-
OM: not yet.
shogo emerges from the back room.
S: sir is there anythign else i can get you?
OM: oh, no, i'll be fine with this, young man, thank you.
three women enter the bar. shogo turns to them cheerily
S: hello, what can i get you ladies to-
one of the women, Mallory, grabs shogo by his throat
M: stay outta my way!
she throws him and he hits a wall
mika and the old man are on their feet.
M: now?
OM: yes, go!
a bright light flashes and a soft bell chimes. shogo's eyes go blank as he recognizes the sound. it was his mother's bell. his mind was racing as he tried to understand. he opened his eyes after the flash and was aw struck. where the girl had stood before, a wolf stood now.
the old man saw shogo's reaction to the bell and knew he was the one they were searching for. he moved quickly and grabbed shogo by the collar of his shirt, dragging him out of the room and into the back.
OM: where's the emergency exit?!
S: wh-what the hell!?!?! did that girl j-jus-
the old man shook shogo violently
OM: exit!
shogo, still in shock pointed towords the hall that lead to the escape. the old man draggeed shogo along. once outside however, shogo followed almost willingly. the old man stopped dragging him and they ran a while through the woods until they reached a park.
OM: *stopping and exhausted* well i see your in shape at least, that's good....
S: what the hell hpapened back there?!
shogo is faring better than the old man, but he is tired too
the old man pulls out a cell phone and dials.
OM: chaoe, bring the car, we're in a park about three miles south of the bar... no, i don't want you to stop by and assist her...see you in a few then.
he hangs up.
S: what is going on here!?
OM: shogo.
S: *taken aback* how do you know my name?!? and that girl why does she have-...
OM: have what shogo...your mother's bell?
S: what do you know about it?
a black car pulls over on the side of the road opposite them in the park. the old man starts walking towards it. a young girl gets out and holds open a door for him.
OM: shogo, i promise i will explain everything later, but right now i need you to trust me. i need you to come with us.
Chaoe, the chauffeur looks at the old man and then shogo, a bit confused, but more concerned and worried.
after a few minutes shogo nods his head. the old man gets in the back seat of the car, and chaoe stands waiting as shogo follows him. she looks relieved. she closes the door behind them and walks around to the front. once she's inside:
OM: to the hotel please.
S: no! wait, what about the girl?
OM: she will be fine, we need to get back.
S: no, we left her there all alone, we need to help her.
chaoe: *looking in the rear view mirror back at the OM*...
OM:..........*nods at chaoe* fine....lets go
chapter three
chaoe flies through the town back down the street to the bar. she flings the car into a parking space, jumps out and in midair transform into a wolf form and dashes inside.
the old man and shogo follow behind her.
S: she can do that too?!
OM: of course she can
they run inside just in time to see chaoe tackle a fox to the ground.
mika lays on the floor battered and beat as two ore foxes (both smaller than the one chaoe tackled* close in on her. she struggles to stand and growls ferociously at them both, but they continue to move in.
shogo grabs a stool and runs in front of mika, swinging at the two foxes.
chaoe has the larger fox backing up toward her sisters. the three foxes all hiss angrily then dash out the door together. chaoe runs to mika's side and lets her lean on her as she stands.
OM: (to mika) well i hope your happy....we had to trek all the way back here to save your hyde....your a worthless piece of s**t....
(to chaoe) good work, lets go home...
he turns and walks out the door. mika stands wavering a bit, trying to steady herself. chaoe looks at her...
chaoe: (to mika) are you alright??
mika: ....yes, i'll be fine. thank you for coming back for me.
chaoe: actually..it was the boy's idea....i wanted to...but.....i can't disobey Mr. Tulsar, he-
mika: i know...its alright. you wanted to come back...that is enough. go on now...he'll need you to drive back.
chaoe returns to her human form.
shogo stands shaking a bit. he can't decide whether this is all real or not. he looks from mika to chaoe and back again.
chaoe: (to shogo) she can't understand anything you say...just your intones and postures....we can't comprehend human words in our loup garoux, or wolf forms...but she is thankful that you made my master come back for her.
she smiles sweetly and comfortingly at shogo, trying to make him feel a bit at ease as he tries to wrap his mind around all of the night's events.
chaoe leads the way out the door. shogo follows behind her. mika trails behind by a larger distance. when chaoe opens the door shogo and the old man climb in. the old man beckons her to close the door promptly. mika is left out of the car as chaoe gets in and drives off toward the hotel.
mika walks home taking back alley's so as not to be spotted by civilians. she is bleeding.
chaoe pulls the car around the front of a lavish hotel. she exits the car and holds the door open for the old man and shogo.
shogo looks around and notices the hotel they have arrived at is "the Radisson"
the old man leads the way throught the doors and up to the room as chaoe gets back in the car and drives around to the garage.
a few minutes after the old man and shogo enter the room chaoe joins them.
OM: (to chaoe) why don't you fix us something to eat? i'm sure mister naganire could use a bite after our "exciting" day. i'm going to go freshen up...i have that ball to attend tonight...the twins should be home soon, tell them to start their homework.
Chaoe: yes sir.
she immediately begins to prepare a meal as the old man enters a bedroom. after a few minutes of standing awkwardly in the kitchen shogo helps chaoe prepare the meal.
chaoe: *stirring the broth* so mister Naganire, i'm sure you have a lot of questions for me....
Shogo:well...yes, but they can wait....i've learned to deal with stressful situations...my mother taught me to channel my stress, so for me, the best thing right now is to cook...it will give my mind time to sort everything out.
chaoe: your mother must have been a very kind and wise woman.
Shogo: wise yes. but what makes you think she was caring?
chaoe: well, the way you are cutting the vegetables...its got a delicate touch to it...it shows that you don't rush. children learn such things from their parents.
shogo looked to see what she was talking about. he looked at his perfectly equal cuts and watched as he slowly lowered the blade to slice, then turned it over and used the back of the knife to sweep the pieces together in a pile.
shogo: yea. she was kind, not unlike yourself.
at the comment chaoe turned her head so that shogo wouldn't see her blush the faintest shade of pink.
two loud younger kids run into the room and throw thier bags on the floor near the doorway. the stop when they see shogo in the kitchen.
