I watch her smile and play with nature as the naive child she is. She’s the only one that can make me appreciate life in others. The harmless insects escape her hypothermic grasp. She still has trouble keeping her ki in check when any emotion builds to much in her and sadly, she could kill the very things she loves with the very emotion she feels for them.
Only the old hag and the fox know I’m up here, the rest are unaware of my presence. Yuusuke is too busy trying to get into Keiko’s pants and the idiot is too busy fawning over her... but I have other pressing matters. Just as I watch them, he watches me. He’s been a couple feet back from me for about 20 minutes now. I can feel his eyes baring into my back. He’s low-class... yet another assassin sent after me. Why so weak? Maybe he was the cheapest my enemy could find, it’ll just be wasted money and time on their part.
His strategy, however, is better than most. He stays away, low and observes quietly. Most I’ve killed have jumped out in an attempt to scare me into submission or catch me off guard. The tactic he uses is my very own, so he shouldn’t be a hard kill. I know what he’s going to do.
“Then you know nothing hybrid.” I hear him whisper as he disappears from my side, teleporting down... toward Yukina!
I teleport and the last thing I feel is a sharp stabbing, pulsating pain through my spine that quickly spreads through my back. I slump over the frightened maiden, coughing up blood violently as I take my last few seconds of life to keep protecting her as a living shield.
“HIEI!” I can hear the fox scream as they begin to run over toward the assassination.
“SPIRIT SHOTGUN!” Yuusuke fires at the mocking demon and, surprisingly, misses.
I slide to my knees, my arms still around my shaking sister; trying desperately to protect her until my last breath. As the others keep cornering and firing at the assassin, Yukina slowly lies me down on the ground and bends over me, trying to heal me.
“Hiei... please don’t die! You’re the only family I have left! I know you’re my brother.... Please don’t leave me.” Her frantic screams turn to breathless, shaking sobs.
How does she know? I know she’s smart... but usually her naivety keeps her from figuring out certain things. “No... I’m not your brother.”
“Yes you are Hiei. I know what happened to our mother and why. Don’t deny it. Don’t leave me...”
I can hear her begin to choke as the tears begin flowing from her red orbs... red like mine... and crystallize before hitting the soft grass beneath.
“No... no... sh- shame... shame to you. I’m not... not your... no...” I can’t finish a coherent sentence as the poison within that make-shift bullet travels faster and begins to invade my brain.
“Brother... please don’t leave me!” She wraps her arms about my now limp body and tries with all her strength to heal me but she’s just not strong enough.
I’ve never felt anything nearly as painful as this poison... but it renders me too weak to scream. I knew I would die in suffering, just didn’t know how exactly.
Her cries get softer and softer as if she’s stopping but I know better. My hearing is going as fluid slowly flushes into my ear canals. My sight is starting to blur as the darkness of death sets in. My precious little sister... I’ve fulfilled my life’s mission. I found out who I am, where I came from and to watch over you. Now, I leave you in their hands... the only ones who ever cared to worry about me... they will succeed where I have failed...
“Hiei! Wake up! We’re going to take you to Genkai!” Yuusuke furiously shakes me as the others fend off themselves and my almost lifeless body from the assassin. I feel another gnawing pain as the fox has fitted me with one of his more barbaric plants. I can feel it acting like a maggot, eating the dead flesh, sucking out the poison and promoting new growth, but I know it won’t work. I know my body. I may be a fighter... but this poison has already traveled to far, killed to much tissue, damaged too much.... I’m slowly shutting down.
I feel that moron lift me up, he’s better for lifting heavy weights than he is with any type of accuracy and begins to rush me to the temple with Yukina at my side, following him.
“St-... Stop...” I wheeze out.
“What?” He looks down at me strangely, still running.
“Stop you buffoon!” I’m able to choke out and he does as told. “Set me on the ground.”
“No, I have to take you to-”
“I won’t make it... lay me down before I wring your neck, oaf.” Once again, he does as told. I motion for Yukina and she bends down to my side quickly and begins stroking my cheek as tears continue to rain down. “Yukina... I just want you to be happy. And because my love runs deeper for you than my hatred for this idiot... I give you my blessing. Be happy Kina-chan... be happy.”
She wraps her pale arms around my neck and cradles my head while rocking back and forth slightly; all the while whispering to me. “I will brother... I promise I will.”
I can deny it no longer... I have no more strength to deny our bloodline any more. I close my eyes and slowly, the pain is nothing but a memory. I feel what seems like the cold hands of death finally embrace me... or would that be my little sister’s ice maiden heritage that keeps her hands so froze as they’re wrapped around me. I like to think it’s the latter as I drift off.
She’s always smelled like honeysuckle... sweet but subtle, though to me, the scent is stronger than my own pungent blood seeping from my body. If I had to choose a place to die... it would be in her arms. I know it causes her pain, but I feel it’s finally bringing me my inner peace Kurama always said I needed to find. Well fox, you’re right again. I’ve found it and now I can finally get a good, long sleep without paranoia being my pillow.
Good bye little sister. I’ll still be watching over you... and this time, you’ll know I’m there.
