I walked to the corner store, and immediately fell down behind the counter with Jude. He muttered a bit of a greeting to me, as did I, and then just sat there in silence for a while.
Jude was definately the silent type. I could tell. He stared off at the back of the counter in front of him. He had that dusty blonde hair falling in his face, and it almost completely masked his face. He was definately cute, but way out of my league. That was for sure.
He must have felt my gaze on him, because he looked over toward me curiously. "What's wrong?" he asked.
I shook my head, awkwardly, and looked forward. "Nothing," I muttered simply, offhandly.
"Oh," was all he said back.
We fell back into a silence that lasted a few more moments, before he spoke up. "You know, it's really nice of you to be doing this. Especially for a friend," he said to me.
I shrugged simply. "I try. Sometimes I wonder why I do, but it's for Hannah. She's all I really got in this dump of a city."
"Yeah. You two seem pretty close."
Okay, that was were I noticed what he was getting at. I looked back over at him. He had a bit of an awkwardness about him, just sitting there, like he was a bit uncomfortable about the whole topic. Yup, I knew what he wanted to know.
"We're not gay," I replied to him.
He let out a breath of relief. "Oh, thank god. I was just a bit worried about it yesterday. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I mean, I have no problem. It's just-"
"Jude! It's fine," I said to him, cutting him off before he could dig himself any deeper of a grave. I shook my head a bit him, smirking a bit at his attempt to make things better. Yes, I actually smirked. That was something very few people could do.
He let out another short breath. "Right. Sorry," he muttered, turning back forward. "Want something to eat?"
I shook my head. "But I would like a slushie," I replied back.
"Two slushies coming right up," he replied back, before standing and jumping over the counter. I waited, as he came back, thinking to myself.
He actually cared if we were gay or not? Really? Normally, guys didn't. At least, not for me. For Hannah, yeah, but not for me. I could be in to aliens from Jupiter, but no one would be hurt. It just seemed really new to have someone care. Kind of awkward, but good, strangely enough.
He handed me the drinks, and then jumped back over the counter, handing me the straws-slash-spoons. I immediately punched the straw in and began to drink. The coldness felt so good on my tongue, and my head, after the headache of a movie I had been through. Again, we sat in silence for a while before he spoke up again.
"I imagine your boyfriend gave you those," he said.
I looked up at him, confused. "Gave me what?" I asked.
"Those earrings. They're diamonds. They have to be."
"Oh, yeah. Actually, Hannah gave them to me for working an hour here for her," I replied back, touching one of them and feeling my cheeks flare a bit.
"Wow. Remind me to do favors for Hannah from now on," he replied, impressed. We laughed a bit, before he persued a question. "But you do have a boyfriend right?" he asked me, curious about it still.
That impressed me. Again, I still wasn't used to people caring about my relationship status, except a very gossipy girl. I shook my head. "No. I haven't had one in over a year," I muttere back.
There was silence again. We waited, drinking our slushies slowly.
"Does Hannah?" he asked.
I groaned inwardly. I knew it was coming. We had gotten to the meat of the subject. Hannah. Of course it was Hannah. I felt a twinge of jealousy appear, and I didn't care who saw. Of course he would be interested in her. Why had I been an idiot. Conversation always were for her, not me. Stupid to even think so.
"No. She broke up with one two months ago," I muttered, flatly, before returning to my slushie. Not another word was coming out of my mouth, for the shame of what I had believed. Stupid Will. Stupid.
