He awoke to the sun peeking through the gap between the curtains.
Yawning, he rolled over to gaze at her sleeping form. For a while, he simply watched her, a sad smile on his face. She was a thoroughbred among mules, a swallow among pigeons, and the single rose in a field of weeds. She was all he wanted, but he couldn’t have her.
A soft, dark wave of hair obscured most of her face. He gently reached out and brushed it aside. She stirred, burrowing deeper into the pillow, a slight frown upon her brow. The light warmed her pale cheeks, free from the salty tears and blotches of the night before.
Sighing, he got out of bed, pulled on some clothes and silently slipped from the bedroom.
The door to the apartment slid shut, as the sunlight crept further into the room, alighting on her hair and skin, until she seemed to glow.
