Yeah, so it turns out that Itachi killed his family cause the Hokage made him. The Uchiha clan and some other clan were about to go to war inside the village and the Uchihas had him go into the Anbu to keep an eye on the other clan, but the Hokage had Itachi telling info. about the Uchihas to him. Then, when the Uchihas were on the verge of getting out of control, Danzo, the Anbu leader, and the Hokage had Itachi kill the entire clan. But, Itachi couldn't bring himself to kill his little brother. Once he had lied to Sasuke, calling himself a bad guy, he went back to Danzo and the Hikage and threatened that if anything bad happened to Sasuke, he'd kill them. Then, he went to join Akatsuki, under the Hokage's orders.
All of this built up to Sasuke thinking that Itachi was a bad guy and wanting to kill him and when he finally did, he would be considered a hero to Konoha, because everyone thought Itachi was a bad guy. Also, while they were fighting, Itachi killed Orochimaru, who Sasuke had somehow absorbed, setting him free from his curse mark. And, before Itachi died, he transferred all of his eye techniques to Sasuke to protect him from Madara, who's the true bad guy.
Sasuke realizes all this when Madara tells him and Sasuke was so sad about what the village had done to Itachi that he actually cried... Then he decided to crush Konoha. Yeah, sucks, right? But, at least now Sasuke has a cool new Sharingan, even though he's using it to destroy the village.
