Who can't say that when they were little, they loved playing in the
playground? I thought the same thing, but everything changed when I learned
that not always, playing in the playground can be fun.
I remember it like it was just yesterday, a hot summer day, November
15, 1998. At that time I was living in Colombia. Mrs Clarita, my
kindergardern teacher, was showing us how to finger paint. I was having so
much fun with my friend, Alicia. We were painting each other colors of blue,
yellow, red, green, and white all over our uniforms. Suddenly, the principal
came to the loud peaker. She announced that an emergency assembly would be
held now. We got out of the classroom, and Mrs Clarita told us to hold hands.
Unfortunately, I was holding hands with the one person I hated the most.
Pedro Martinez was a small boy with brown hair, brown eyes, and his
teeth, the size of a hamster's. His tan skin was touching mine. He was
smiling at me, I felt like throwing up on his face, seeing if that would stop
him from smiling. We aproached the auditorium, as noisy as always. Us,
the 1st, and 2nd graders were first. The principal told us that "Old slide"
was dangerous. Since, 1990, "Old slide" was used, and a boy had died
because he felt down, and "Old slide" was ontop of him. We all had
to aboyed trying to play with it. Noone wanted another incident.
That afternoon, I told my parents about "Old slide". "Oh dear, that
sounds dangerous!" my mom exclaimed. I thought she was right. Mom is just
a simple, sweet, and caring person. She worried about anything, even if a fly
was hurt. "You better be careful, and not allow that crazy friend of yours
get you in any trouble" Dad was a very wise man. You think he's wrong at
first, but then, it turns out that he was right all the time. "What's that
noise? I can't hear Barney!!" Dennis, my brother, was a very tricky kid.
You've got to be careful 'cause he would try to make you feel bad in
anyway. At night, the phone rang. I picked it up , and it was Alicia.
"Hi!!", "Hello" Alicia sounded happy about something. "so... what are you
doing?!?" "nothing" she defenetly sounded fishy. "Hey, I have a plan, want
to hear it?" I knew it! Something was going on. "What?" I tried yo sound as if
I didn't care. "You promise not to tell anybody?" "Yeah, promise." Alicia
stopped for a moment. "Well, I'm going to tell you tomorrow, ok?" "Fine"
Alicia hanged up. Aww man, I wanted to know, I thought. Those words, "I have
a plan.." swirled in my mind like a song. I really want to know what it was.
I woke up at 6am, like always. Took a shower, changed, ate breakfast, grab
my stuff and go to school. The same rutine everyday. When class started, I
saw Alicia. She looked the same, there was never a difference, small with blond
hair, green eyes, peach skin, and her blue and white uniform. She was smiling
stood up, and grabbed my hand. She whispered, "Lets go to the bathroom
after lunch, and i'll show you my plan." Again, the word plan stocked me.
I was very curious, what might her plan be? After lunch, Alicia and I went
to the bathroom., but instead, she took me were "Old slide" was. "Look, isn't
beautiful?" She said smiling, as if I was happy too. "Come'on, lets clime!!"
She started going up the old, green, rusty stairs. I stepped back 4 steps.
I couldn't believe her, this WAS her plan!?! I was just staring, not moving,
eyes wide open. Alicia was happy, she was waving her hands up in the air.
I was very dissapointed, that my friend Alicia would think this way. I looked
down in shame, but i saw that "Old slide" was not connected to the floor!.
I gasp, trying to let out a huge scream. I couldn't do anything, 'cause "Old
slide" was like 6 feet tall!!. I tried to move my feet, to run and tell Alicia to
get down before abything bad can happen to her. I was paralyzed, scared,
and mad. In any momment Alicia could die. I shot my eyes tight, thinking
that this was not happening. BAMM!! I looked over, and saw Alicia in the
floor. She was screaming for help. Blood was all over her face, head and the
floor. "Old slide" was ontop of her. I still wasn't moving, I was just staring,
seeing how Alicia reached her hand out so I could help her. I didn't do
anything, I didn't even think of coming over to help her. "MARIA!! PLEASE
HELP ME!!" The janitor seemed to hear her sreams, and came running. He
pushed over "Old slide" a bit, enought to get Alicia out. When the janitor
picked up Alicia, he looked at me and turn his back at me. Alicia opened her
eyes, her face covered with blood, she looked at me and then closed them
again.
I went outside, looking over at how people came to see what was going on.
When the ambulance came, Alicia was put into the strecher. Her body covered
with blood, her head cracked open. Even though, I knew that I was going to be
in huge trouble, not only with my parents, but with the principal. Then I knew
that I should never let a friend get me into this kind of trouble, not only
because I would get into trouble, but so noone gets hurt. 2 months past, and I
never saw Alicia again, some people say that she moved to USA, others say she
now hunts the school's playground, and every afternoon, after the
kindergardern's lunch finish, everyone can hear her screams, and she saying
"MARIA!!!HELP ME!!!". But I know that now, shes in a better place.
