Once upon a time there was a princess. This princess was engaged to be married to a strong knight and that made her very happy. But she didn't know that the knight didn't care for her. No, the night fell in love with a girl from a far away place and forgot about his engagement to the princess. And every day, the princess would watch the knight and the girl kiss and hold hands, not at all hiding their affections. The knight never broke off his engagement, nor told the princess of his lover or his lover of his engagement to the princess. And so, bit by bit a wound opened in the princess' heart. And bit by bit that wound swelled and festered, infected with her pain and sorrow.
But no matter how bad the wound got she never cried out. She never spoke up, hoping and praying that someday the knight would realize what he'd done and make it right. If he only broke things off properly, then she thought, her pain would end and that wound would heal. But he never did. And no one around the princess ever asked, everyone thinking it was best to keep silent on the matter, no one ever checked to see if she was alright. If only someone had noticed perhaps the pain never would have swelled so much. Then one day, when the princess was hurting more than she thought she ever could, a witch appeared before her in the form of a young girl.
"I'll get rid of the source of your pain." The witch said. She loved playing around with the hearts and lives of humans.
"You will?" asked the princess. This pain could end?
"I will. But in exchange you must promise to give me a doll for my sister to play with and I will make it dissapear."
Not knowing any better, and in too much pain to think long on her choice, the princess agreed. In the space of a breath the witch dissappeared. If only she had known that the witch meant the girl when she spoke of getting rid of the source of her pain. Perhaps she would not have agreed. But that made no difference now. For the witch had killed the girl and delivered the body along with a note to the knight.
The knight's rage was great at this and, forgetting all reason, he sought out the princess. When he found her he took her deep underground into a secret room and put her through a great deal of pain. And no matter how much she cried out and bled, no matter how she apologized, he didn't stop until she died. When the princess died the witch's sister came and took the princess' body away to be her new doll.
In the end the only ones to find happiness were the witch who watched the results of her work with wicked glee, and the witch's sister who had a brand new doll. Humans really are foolish.

The young detective had been sent out to investigate a case of child trafficking in the city's most shadowy district. Honestly he didn't think anything would come of it but a job was a job. When he opened the door and saw it with his own eyes he couldn't believe it. There was a, man? woman? he couldn't be sure, surrounded by children in all manner of exotic dress. Some of them were even hanging off the mysterious person who was clearly much older than any of them. "The hell are you doing with all these little girls?!"
The person in the center of at all appeared entirely unconcerned as they stroked the head of the closest child who happily rubbed up against them and licked their ear. "Nothing at all." That lazy grin didn't appear at all trustworthy.
"I'd hardly call what the one with the glasses is doing nothing!" The detective couldn't believe it! Here these children were completely oblivious that they were damn near living in sin with an adult!
"Why are you here anyways?" This person did not seem too pleased with his presence though they didn't seem to care too much.
"I I heard there was illegal trafficking in children going on!" And this looked pretty damn much like what he'd been told it was!
"I don't know where you got such an idea that I would do it." They'd certainly never want to give any of these precious children. Especially not for some petty monetary gain.
"Ne, mistress who's this?" The one with the glasses looked imploringly up at her mistress. Just who was this strange person?
"Y You! Don't you want to go back to your parents?" They couldn't possibly be doing well in this environment could they?
The mistress looked at the young detective as if he were little more than a fly. "Someone unimportant. They obviously don't want to, they're free to leave if they wish." They were all very obviously fond of him.
"Okay mistress!" The small girl nuzzled her mistresses' neck "Shiki doesn't want to leave mistress. Mistress promised she'd take care of me and even bring Ne-kun here"
"They're kids! They're too young to know better!" At that age did they even understand that what they wore alone was inappropriate?
"Good girl I'll bring him here soon enough." The mistress ruffled the child's hair. He'd be sure to bring her sweetheart into their fold very soon. "Of course they know better, these aren't oblivious children you just grouped them in with."
"Thank you mistress!" The little girl hugged and kissed her mistress, adjusting her oversized glasses afterwords.
"How can they know better?! None of them look a day over twelve!" They all truly looked no older than that. They were so small and innocent seeming how could they know?
"You're welcome." The mistress happily patted the child's hair. "They've been taught of course." Any fool could see that clearly.
"Taught... Just what do you teach them?" The detective gave the mistress a look of you have got to be kidding me. They were probably being taught all sorts of lewd things!
"They know how things work, that's what they need to know. Now if you're done questioning me please leave." Mistress was growing tired of this bothersome man.
Why on earth was he humoring this he/she? "Whoa whoa whoa, you're not their legal guardian so I'm going to have to take these kids into protective custody."
"You won't be taking them, they don't want to leave so you can't force them." And mistress most certainly would not allow for it.
"Yeah! We don't want to leave mistress!" The girl stuck her tongue out at the detective in defiance.
"Look, this is for your own good kid. You'll be happier back with your folks." And he truly believed that. After all, where could a kid be happier than with their parents?
"Will they? Have you taken into account what possible pasts and family issues there might be with these children?" The foolishness of this man, it was nearly overwhelming.
"Look, the state'll take care of that. My job is just to get them out of here and to a safe environment." There was a system in place for these reasons.
"I don't wanna go back there mistress!" The child shivered in fear and all of her fellows moved closer to their mistress.
"Don't worry mistress won't let anyone take you back to those bad places." the person, cop undoubtly, gets a glare "You don't give a care about what these poor things went through. Just your pay check." There was nothing safe about where they would be sent.
"Good!" The child hugged her mistress and the others relaxed.
"Look, it's not that I don't care. But the law is the law and we all have to follow it. So just hand them over peacefully so no one needs to bring a team in to make it happen." This was close to getting messy.
"Ha, call in a team and we won't be here by the time it takes them to get everything prepared let alone get here." Such a thing was of no concern to them.
"Tch, you asked for it buddy" The detective pulled out his gun and aimed it at the "mistress".
"Kanda, Oguna protect us!" And before the detective knew what was happening his gun was suddenly gone and his radio now crushed.

Mother! Mother don't leave me! *He woke with a start, that dream again. Bittersweet and painful, it made his heart hurt to go through it every night. And yet a part of him didn't want to wake up because at least in his dreams she was with him.* Oguna. Oguna it's okay. I'm here. You're not alone. *It didn't make any sense but there she was before him. Cradling him in her arms like she always had when he cried.* It's alright now. Mother... Mother! *He flung himself at her and held tightly onto her. It felt so good to be held by her again. And then he noticed. Noticed that he could see through her.* Mother... you're.... Yes sohn, I am. But, *And here she stroked his hair gently as she had always done to comfort him.* I won't leave you again. As long as you want me I'll always be by your side. Of course I want you mother! *It was a strange arrangement, the boy wandering seemingly alone with his ghostly mother. But for them it was enough.*

*After that, she'd wandered. Lost, confused, not really remembering who she'd been in life, only that her end had been so painful that something had make her forget in order to spare her. And then, she saw him. She saw a boy no older than twelve. She felt she should stay by him, close to him, no matter what. So she did. She followed the boy everywhere and did her best to ease his loneliness though she doubted she could be seen or heard. And little by little she remembered who she had been though the memories were vague. But she remembered that this boy was her precious sohn. And she would not leave him again.

*She had loved him. So deeply it felt like he was her whole world. But when she started to feel that he only wanted her body it hurt. That intense love she felt cut her deeply. She had to get away, at least for a little while. Lord knew she couldn't stay away from him forever. She'd told him, told him she needed a little space. That shed be back soon. He hadn't waited.
He'd hunted her down and dragged her back. Locked her away from the world where no one else could find her. It was dark, and uncomfortably warm. She'd been chained to the room, unable to go more than a few feet in any direction. It was terrifying and exhausting and all she wanted to do was sleep. Then he'd come for her. To force feed her and bathe her. But more than either of those he came to have her. And heaven help her, she still loved him.
So she apologized. Every time he came down to her she pleaded with him to forgive her. However, it always fell on deaf ears. So she'd tried to show him. She'd stopped fighting him when he took her. Given in to his whims. Kissed him with what little strength she had left. All to apologize to him for hurting him. But that didn't matter to him and she could tell. And so she was left with only one way she could see to make it up to him.
She found something sharp, probably a shard of some cookware, and cut herself. Cut deep and long s that her blood flowed like water. And she wrote of her love for him in her native tongue on the walls and on the floor. And with the last of her strength and life she cut out her heart to offer to him. Even with her last breaths she prayed for his forgiveness. Such was her love.*

Can you really do that? Can you erase the blood from my hands? *He didn't believe it was possible. His hands were so stained with blood....* *Nods and takes his hands in hers.* I can. Even if your hands are red you want to be forgiven in your heart. No matter what you think you've done it's okay because you regret it. Your heart wants to be forgiven. So, I will take your sins away. *She smiled and it made him feel warm though he couldn't understand why.* If if you can really do that... I can. *Though her eyes turned red and the sky grew dark he couldn't feel anything malevolent from her. Actually, it felt soft and kind. Like being held by an angel. Though many would have thought otherwise this horned kami-sama and phantom child were pure.*

*He remembered her so clearly. Her smile, her tears, her anger, her touch. He remembered her love that didn't even consider the fact that he wasn't human, that disregarded any sins he had committed and ignored his cruelties. That, that had been something he couldn't understand. But it was certainly something he didn't want to forget because he knew that he cherished that feeling of her unwavering love. As heavy and seemingly constricting as it was he loved that feeling.
And now, now he remembered the piercing pain he'd felt when he lost her. Remembered that sharp unfiltered panic he'd felt when he saw her running towards him and then watched as her chest was pierced through from behind. Recalled how much it pained him to see the shock and fear on her face as she realized what had happened to her. His heart had clenched hard in his chest and for a moment he couldn't get air into his lungs. As she fell into his arms he barely had a second to react and catch her. He still remembered her warm blood soaking his shirt.
It had barely taken half a second but he had pulled his power into himself and froze her there in time. And she had remained like that since then, frozen in time. Not dead, but neither was she really alive. Hanekoma had told him many times to just let her die. To let her die and then seek her out in the Game. Though he knew that was what he should have done he couldn't bring himself to do it. He couldn't bare to lose her again for even a moment. Not now that he finally knew what it was like to be loved like that, to love someone the same way. For now he would wait. Wait and gather his power until he could repair her body and be with her again.*

*It should have been so easy. She was just some random woman. Just some strange random woman who took him into her home without question. Gave him a place to stay and offered him food to eat. It should have been easy to kill her. But it wasn't. Every time she looked at him, held him without fear, it made him hesitate. Made him feel something, something warm and tight in his chest. It was strange, and foreign. But not bad. It even felt pleasant. Perhaps, perhaps this was a mother's warmth.*
