basics
name : gaara (of the sand/desert) age : 12 birthday : january 19th height : 146.1 cm weight : 39 kg bloodtype : AB birthplace : hidden sand village ninja rank : genin family : Temari, Kankuro, Kazekage (see relationships) abilities : all deal with sand (see techniques) first appearence : volume 4, chapter 8 (#35 overall) mission results : ?? D Missions, 8 C Missions, 1 B Mission, 0 A Missions, 0 S Missions. And he's returned from all of them unharmed.
Gaara is a ninja from the Hidden Sand Village, entering the Village to take the Chuunin exam with his siblings Temuri and Kankuro, or so it seems. He's feared in his own village, even by his sister and brother, because of the enormous power he holds. The gourd on his back is a mixture of sand, blood of those he's killed and a little something extra. This mixture is his main weapon and defense, as he can kill others and it creates shells around him, it's also something else... but that would spoil it ^_^ And in case you're wondering, the kanji on his forehead is "ai" which means "love"
look : His hair is a deep mahogany brown tone, and his eyes are aquamarine and remind me of mako eyes (ala Final Fantasy 7). And who could forget his forehead? The symbol "ai" or love adorns it on the left side or his head.
attire : -first outfit : He wears a deep brown/black shirt and pants, the same hue/value/intensity. The pants are rather Capri like, and bunch at the end with a cuff. The cuffs are met with bandages that cover underneath both his legs and finish into his ninja sandals of the same color. Crossing from the right is a long a sash that circles his shoulder twice then dangles in the back of him, I've seen it both red and deep green. On the other shoulder is a leather holster that holds the sand gourd upon his back, there are three smaller straps that cross the right side to keep it stationed. His head protector, of course with the sand symbol and deep burgundy sash, is on the lower half of the leather strap. Completing his outfit is his total sand gourd, that's on his back and has its own deep red sash around the connection of the two halves... and has "EE" stamps on it.
-second outfit : His second outfit isn't much different than his first, in terms of total design. He still retains the sash idea and puffed pants, along with the leather strap. This time, however, his outfit is totally red and instead of a red sash he has white. His shirt is actually button down, siding to the left, and is quarter sleeved. He also wears netting under his outfit and this netting reaches down into his shoes
indepth information
past Before the manga started, like the story, there was a hidden sand priest known as Shukaku, also as the incarnation of sand, who was sealed into a tea kettle. Also around this time, the Hidden Sand village saw their military force slipping... they needed to 'make' better shinobi or who knows what could happen. Kazekage decided to go on and turn his unborn son into a little project. Kazekage possessed Gaara upon his birth, with the incarnation of sand using his ninjutsu (hyoui no jutsu). This process ultimately killed Gaara's mother, who died cursing the village for her sacrifice, she was apparently his nourishment and that's all... no love, no caring... just food. Before being swallowed by the sand, she named the child Gaara, meaning 'the demon who loves only himself,' in hopes that he would carry on her grudge against those who caused her death as well as the rest of the world. As an addition, her so called 'love' and will for him, as well as most likely her whole body, remained in the sand... as more protection (aha, like Harry Potter! xD). As he grew, he was spoiled by his father and others, and pretty much raised by his uncle Yashumaru, twin to Gaara's mother. As a young child he believed that this spoiling and freedom was love but as he grew, so did his power and the ninja community began to realize that he was now becoming a threat... so there were many assassination attempts, but the sand always stopped them. When Gaara reached the age of six, however, a few course of events lead him to finally snap and accept things about him. He had been trying to get the children of his village to accept him, as Naruto did, but unfortunately they would run away. He tried to aid them, using his sand to get their ball back, but again they ran. As he reached out for them, so did the sand, and it attacked some of the children. Luckily, Yashumaru was there to stop some of the attacks, but he also was injured by the sand. Back home, Gaara stared at the picture of his mother, who looked exactly like his uncle... he was also holding a knife in his hand. He raised the knife, hoping for it to cut him, but the sand blocked the knife. He tried to dig it deeper, but Yashumaru appeared and stopped his attempt. He demanded to know what Gaara was doing, Gaara looked up and asked him what pain was; as Gaara had never experienced it. After the shock of the question, Yashumaru replied that it wasn't good... and there were two times; physical and emotional. Gaara then replied that he felt emotional pain, that his insides hurt... and Yashumaru looked down at him with sympathy but then replied that he would make up for some of it by taking medicine to one of the children he hurt. Gaara smiled and went on his way, but only to be denied by the boy and the door slamming on his face. He walked through the streets in dismay, and killed a villager who shouted at him, only to be glared at by his father. On a ledge looking over the city, Gaara sat in solitude, he couldn't sleep obviously since the demon grew powerful as Gaara slept... so he watched in a sullen mood. But then, another assassination attempt, but blocked by the sand as usual, as well as crushed the attempter. But to Gaara's dismay, this was performed by Yashumaru who secretly hated Gaara for taking his sister away from him. As his uncle lay dying, he found the truth; of his mother's bitterness and his true purpose. There not to love or believe others, but to pretty much kill. Yashumaru asked for Gaara's death, detonated a bomb and blew himself up hoping for Gaara to be taken in the blast but he remained... stunned a bit then coming to conclusions. So at the age of six, he found his answers... he wasn't there to love, to believe in others, he wasn't going to any longer. He was there to kill, to ruin lives and to be an assassin... that was his whole existence. With that, he used his sand to create the 'ai' symbol on his head... and to my beliefs that was the first time he bled.
present So we bring ourselves now. Gaara was now pretty much insane, and a happy killing freak. There were probably more assassination attempts put on his life, but somehow he raised to what we know of today.. and is actually used as what he was made to do. You see, he's not in the Leaf Village to go to the next level in Ninja ranks, he's there with his siblings to start a war. The hidden sound village and the hidden sand village saw the hidden leaf village as a threat... and they needed to stop it, and what better way then with a war, ne? This was also pretty much set up by Orochimaru, by the way... since he wants Sasuke so badly for his damned little 'eternal life' crap.
Now, however, because of the battle with Uzumaki Naruto, Gaara seems to have a different outlook on life. He has come to the realization that one must protect important people and cherish them, even if they fight for a wrong cause. He holds himself, kinda, in Naruto's debt and is working with the Konoha shinobi to bring Orochimaru and the Oto-nin down.
tidbits I figured I should just put it here. Notice Gaara's eyes? Its because he lacks sleep... the demon holds greater power when Gaara is asleep, so.. he doesn't really sleep. hence, the name of this site. Also, Gaara's final transformed form is actually a Tanuki, some sort of Japanese raccoon. And according to many Japanese legends, the kitsune and tanuki have always seemed to try to best each other..
relationships
pictures coming soon
naruto Has something in common with him, has a demon! whoo, demon power. But unlike Naruto who found someone to acknowledge and care about him, Gaara found the path of mistreatment and loathing. They are similar but opposite, each choosing different paths to live with their demons. He and Naruto also fought in the forest as Ochi-sama tried to destroy Konoha, but Naruto ultimately beat Gaara, not killed... showing him that caring was something powerful... oh the sappiness. He also now feels kind of indebted to Naruto for showing him the importance of people. Again, oh the sap!
sasuke Gaara really wanted to fight him, but I think just because of Ochi-sama's plans and all. But, to my knowledge they were just supposed to fight, but then Gaara strayed from the plans and wanted to kill him like anyone else. After the snakes appeared and the three sand-nin fled to the forest, Gaara faced Sasuke again, but Sasuke was no match for Gaara.. and Sasuke had to be saved by Naruto.
sakura I think that Sakura reminds Gaara of Yashumaru and also his mother, a bit. Her strong will to protect Sasuke kind of hit him a bit hard as he went in for the kill. But, he pretty much got over that flash quickly and pinned her to a tree. Heh, she got her a** whooped by his sand.
temari Gaara and Kankuro's older sister, she's 15. To me, I think shes the only one that really cares about her younger brother.. she worries about him when he fights especially when he fought Naruto in the wood. She's also confident in his abilities as well at the same time. So she was worried about Shukaku coming out.. if you knew about him, wouldn't you? She cares enough to get him after his fight with Naruto and carry him home.. even after being knocked into a tree by him.
kankuro Gaara's older brother, he's 14. He got put in his place by Gaara after the death of the Rain-nin, it was rather interesting who control this family. He knows everything about his brother and is even willing to spout it all to Naruto-kun.. hmm, plotting? I got suspicious. He forfited the chuunin final round, and fought Shino in the woods.. but got beat by the bugs. But he actually lived at the end, and carried off his brother at the end.
rock lee Gaara faced him in the third round prelims, where Kankuro spouted everything to Naruto. You learned most everything about Gaara's techniques with this fight. Through some parts, it looked like Lee-kun was winning, but Gaara was always a step ahead with his sand and royally kicked his a** to the point he will supposedly never fight again. He later saves Lee during the his fight with Kimimaro, actually saves him a bunch of times and also trips him with sand. After the battle, Gaara explains to Lee how Kimimaro was similar to Naruto and his views on precious people.
neiji Gaara was impressed with his power during the prelims, and seemed to have wanted to fight him. But Naruto got to him first and I think Gaara's interest shifted to Naruto after his win.
tenten Okay, Gaara never faced her... but Temari did and.. Temari royally kicked her a**.. xD
hinata Okay, again. But she was told to forfeit the prelims because of Gaara-chan &3.
kazekage Gaara's father, eeeevil person in my eyes for putting Gaara through what he was put through. In chapter 140, its revealed that Ochi-sama killed Kazekage, Kabuto was impersonating him while in the village. During the Chuunin exam, he was impersonated by Ochi-sama.
shino Also, didn't face him. But Kankuro did... and got beaten by the bugs.
kakashi Didn't face him either... but I think threatened him.. and glared at him... and fun stuff like that.
orochimaru I call him Ochi-sama for some reason, don't mind me. Uh, hired the Sand to start a war, which leads to Gaara. yeah. Gaara's village has now joined forces with Konoha to defeat Orochimaru.
baki Gaara, Temari and Kankuro's sensei.... thats pretty much it. He also keeps getting worried when Gaara said he 'talked' to someone, "eee, you didn't kill them did you?"
yashumaru gaara's uncle who was twin to gaara's mother. It really looked like he cared for Gaara, hoping to raise him as his sister couldn't. But unfortunatly, he held bitterness towards his nephew for taking his sister away, and performed an attempted assassination. He was the reason Gaara went on the path he did, and also blew himself up.
kimimaro Though joining late in the battle, Gaara faced off with the Oto-nin after saving Rock Lee. Kimimaro seemed an even match with our sand user, as his bones were an ultimate offense to Gaara's defence. He even seemed to have the upperhand at times, being able to push the sand back and such. But in the end, and after Kimimaro went to level two, the poor oto-nin died because of his weak condition.
people gaara has killed Dosu; that sound-nin rain people : baiu, sigure and midare his mother many many assassins two people trying to get him to lose the fight Kimimaro [kinda] many many more in his way
techniques
suna no tate Basic translation : shield of sand. This is Gaara's powerful defense system. It seems quicker than his mind, and automatic and is.. of sand. It's basically the sand from his gourd surrounding him, or creating a wall of protection when something is about to strike Gaara, it can be from anywhere and it will block. Its his uber defense, and nothing really gets past it. It's always used, you really never see it not used. Also, Gaara took this to the next step against Sasuke for the first time. He took it further, and made a dome around himself... and had a floating sand eye above watching for Sasuke. This form was hit hard by Sasuke's lightening attack thing... and gave us the chance to see the demon within ^.-
suna no yoroi basic translation : armor of sand. now, if something *actually* gets past the auto defense sand shield, Gaara's sand also created a protective layer all over his body. It's created a sort of armor around his body that disallows him to get any scratches on his actual body. It something does hit him, it just solidifies once more like nothing happened. You first see it get used during the fight with Rock Lee because he *gasp* actually gets past the shield. It also apparently takes up a lot of Chakra.
subaku kyuu translation : desert graveyard. So, besides just defenses, Gaara actually does have offense power. This doesn't seem to be a jutsu, more of a use of mind and.. sand. But apparently it is... anyway, he uses his lovely sand to pretty much surround his victim and bury him in the sand. He can either have it smother them, laugh at them and all or use the next one. First seen used on the Rain-nin, poor suckers, then on Rock Lee.
subaku sousou translation : desert coffin. Continuing from the subakuchuu, he uses the sand to crush his opponent, and it doesn't have to be the whole body but can take bits off. Also first seen on the Rain-nin, then also on Rock Lee, but mainly just his arm... until Gai shows up...
suna bushin Basic Translation : sand clone. Like the Kage Bushin no Jutsu, but with.. sand. He basically just created copies of himself of equal power with his sand to attack. Is Gaara just lazy? no.. he on;y uses this like once but it does prove useful until Sasuke beats them all ~.~;
fuuton mugen sajin dai toppa translation : fuuton infinite sand cloud penetration. Used in his almost-transformed form, the demon in him, as well as a bunch of other mouths from the sand, inhale a lot of air then exhales a lot and releases a lot of wind to knock his opponent down and out. This is used on Naruto's kage bushin no jutsu in the forest.
shunshin no jutsu basically just a, kinda teleportation justu. Gaara uses the sand to move him... really fast *really, can't think of a way to describe it*
takuki neiri no jutsu basic translation : badger/raccoon sleep technique. Wow, something without sand. Because the demon is more powerful when Gaara is asleep, Gaara uses this to put himself to sleep to let Shukaku gain full control and kill Naruto and everyone else. Naruto and Gama-sama henge into a giant kitsune to counter, with Naruto then punching Gaara in the face [okiyagare...!]
fuuton renkuudan translation : fuuton steroid blanks. a technique under the fake sleep jutsu and shukaku influence. shukaku/gaara seems to also inhale a lot of air.. then hits his stomach to release a HUGE ball of hair/wind/whatnot at the target. gama-sama counters with water volleys... its amusing.
daisan no me *direct translation coming soon* The sand eye thing. Gaara basically creates a third eye out of sand to spy from a great distance. This eye can go anywhere. He covers one eye with a seal, creates an eye in his hand and another near the target. He uses this to cheat on the first test of the chuunin exam and also to spy on sasuke and kakashi before the third test.
sunashu riken *translation coming soon* An attack Gaara uses in near totally transformed form. He wraps his arms around his head then unfurls them to release balls of sand (or wind.. could be wind... he has a lot of things with wind) in sharp.. needle.. ball things.
suna shigure translation: sand drizzle. Basically, Gaara just makes the sand rain down on someone in large clumps. Gaara just used it as a distraction against Kimimaro.
ryuusa bakuryu translations: quicksand *something*. This one is pretty damn cool actually. Gaara calls forth a LOT of sand and it does this avalanche affect and just pummels the enemy in a big pit of sand. He took out a large clearing and bits of forest with this one.
sabaku taisou translation: desert imperial funeral. A step up from just a desert coffin and graveyard. Using Ryuusa Bakuryu, he places his hands the sand it, to my assumption, squishes the person underneath the devastation.
saikou zettai bougyo shuukaku no tate trsanlation: supreme absolute defense, shield of shuukaku. I have to say, I love this thing, it's so lame looking [xD]. It's Gaara's supreme defense thing, the demon tanuki himself, well a matter of speaking. It's totally solid and in the shape of Shuukaku, bloated and everything, wearing a hat.
kanzentai basic translation : complete [form]. Not really a technique, per say... but something. After Naruto's massive kagebushin attack [naruto nisenrendan no maki, hehe ^_^;] Shukaku appears in its true and massive tanuki-ness, towering over the trees, and causing more shock upon everyone's faces.
hahasan his mother. Mother dearest is a driving force for Gaara, she tells him what to do and wants him to feed with nice clean blood. He converses with her during his fight with Sasuke in the Chuunin exam, assuring her that he will kill Sasuke and give him to her. I wonder if Shuukaku and kaa-san plot things or if they argue what to do with Gaara-dearest.. hm...
shuukaku Okay... not really a technique.. but something that Gaara uses. Like Naruto, a demon inside him with unlimited amounts of Chakra, he looks like a Tanuki, a raccoon, and is really evil. But, unlike Naruto who has a seal over the kyuubi and access to the chakra. Gaara is possessed by the demon and loses control if he sleeps (so, he doesn't)... And he apparently likes the taste of blood on full moons. You first kinda see him when he kills Dosu... then really see him in the fight against Naruto.
sand as a whole explanation, as we're finally given on in chapter 217. Besides just being able to control the sand and use it to his will, Gaara is also able to collect the strongest minerals from underground. Using his chakra, he's able to then pressurize them into dense sand for his use. Still not sure if it actually his ability or Shuukaku's, since he makes reference to Bloodline abilities while talking to Kimimaro.
nameless sand abilities -make walls -make sandpits and quicksand things -fling the sand -make little balloons of sand to sit on -make a gourd -probably more...
- that's it for now... I'm pretty sure there are more, some I missed ~.~;
name
literal meaning as most people say, pointed out and whatnot. If you look at each part of his name in kanji, this Kishimoto-sama writes it that way, it actually means "I love death" or something along those lines. 我 愛 羅, see the lovely kanji? if not.. uh, sorry. lets take it piece by piece, ne? 我 = 'ware, waga' means my, me, our, self, oneself.. you get the point 愛 = 'ai' means love 羅 = 'shura, ra' means something along the lines of death or carnage so yeah.. its basically "ware ai shura" or as the kanji suggests.. so like "I love death" ^___^;
naruto-ness meaning In Chapter 130 of Naruto, during a Gaara angsty flashback scene, we learn the Naruto-ish meaning of his name. Yashamaru, his uncle, reveals to Gaara the name that was given to him. Upon Gaara's mother's deathbed, she gave him the name which means "ware wo aisuru shura" or "the demon who loves only himself" in hopes for him to bring revenge for her suffering and destroy as much as he can without care. She had hopes this name would bring him the power he needed to do so, so he would live without the love of others and spread his own hate upon everyone else. Its a sad truth, and something that did mess him up a bit.. besides everything else in his life.
so.. both are basically the same thing... one just took apart the kanji and one is a meaning. x.x; make sense? sorry, I'm rather horrible at Japanese, used a dictionary and searched for a while to get it and all... x.x
anime information
seiyuu : Ishida Akira ( 石田彰 ) company : ezaki productions other roles : kaoru - evangelion demon swordsman - ff:u hakkai - saiyuuki xelloss - slayers fisheye - sailormoon supers asuran zara - gundam seed hiwatari satoshi - dnangel more roles at hitoshi dai's site.
I honestly don't have a lot of information about Ishida Akira and don't know a lot about him, but he has done a lot of good roles and is currently doing quite a few.
anime differences (thus far) gaara's body sash is white in the anime, the one around his gourd is still the bloody red color. In the manga, it was all red. His hair is more red than in the manga, but alls good. Also, there doesn't seem to be a color difference in the headprotectors, they are all blue now instead of .. well being different. I think the sand had burgandy in the manga. I also thought kankuro had white face paint along with the red, but uh.. yeah o.o;
future
very simply put. I see Gaara sadly dieing. I don't see any revelations that his life isn't just killing.. I mean he's like transformed into a huge Tanuki. But, I do see Temari trying to save her little brother.. I dunno, I just do.. she seems like she actually cares about him e.e;
*cough* nevermind... we'll really have to wait and see. There have been theories that "Dawn" or Ochi's group will be after him as they are with Naruto, trying to gain control of the demons... who knooows, only Kishimoto-sama. But.. I'm sure he'll be back biggrin
I'm just hoping he won't come back.. wearing like a monk robe, shaved head and offering Naruto a plate of raddishes and a blender, hoping for him to now call him "fufinono" ala Rocko's Modern Life. That'd just be bad, horrible.. and I'd cry.
He came back! Still kicking a** but now having learned a life lesson! whoot! o_o/ I'm now hoping he'll stick around, maybe he'll still ask Naruto about seals for Shuukaku and also maybe something involving Akatsuki~
