I decided to actually make my journal useful, so now I'm giving out free french lessons through this journal. Through my French teacher. So.. um....if anything is spelled wrong or incorrect, I blame thy teacher.

Don't know too much about this just yet so I'll keep updating you. Right now I know this:

In french, when a word ends with a consonant, that consonant is silent-- unless there is a word with a vowel in front of it. For example:

<3Silent<3

Très Bien. (Very good-- commonly used to reply to "how are you?" wink

It is pronounced "Treh Bee-ahn" (pronounced the n very softly, almost silently)

But if you said..

Très Bien, Et toi? (Very good. And you?

The n in Bien is not silent.

(Treh Bee-ah Neh Twah)

Note how it comments with the vowel of the next word instead of ending at its own word...whether or not you're supposed to do that I donno, it's my teacher's accent. xD

Also, the letter "H" is always silent and considered a vowel.

(the letters c, r, f, and l are not silent, even if at the end of a word.)

The J's and r's and s are pronounced slightly different depending on the situation.

J is almost always pronounced like Zhey (this is a rough spelling...it's hard to show how it is pronounced without speaking it to you.) Instead of pushing your tongue forward, it should be held back in the regular J position. When you pronounce a Z you'll notice you lift up your tongue foward, so don't do that. The sound you should get should be between an S, a Z, and a J.

I have no idea how to pronounce the R's. I do know you make the sound at the back of your throat though. ._.;; I'll get back to you on that one later.

S, in this situation, sounds like a Z

vowel+s+vowel

Musique, for example, is pronounced like Mew-Zeek.

In this situation, it sounds like a regular S

Vowel+SS+Vowel

Uh..no example for you. I'll edit this later. ^__^;;

Vocabulary:

Merci like Mercy, but the last syllable (ci) is a little more emphasized. (Mir-Seee)

Thank you

--

De Rien is pronounced sort of like the name. (Day-ree-oh)

You're welcome.

--

Madame (Mah-Dahm) means Mrs. (the french abbreviation, however, is Mme.)

Mademoiselle (sp? Mah-Dah-Mwah-Sell) means Miss. (Mlle.)

Monsieur means, of course, Mister/Mr. (Mahn-Syuur/soor) (M.)

--

Salut (Sah-Loo....like how they say it in the numa numa song. xD) means either hello, or goodbye. It is also more casual (If you've ever taken Japanese, you know about the polite/casual forms. This would be casual. If you haven't, consider it like saying "ello" or "Yello", like when you're answering the phone.)

(pronounce t softly)

Bonjour (Bahn-Jhor) of course means hello or good morning. It is more polite. ( Think of it like literally saying "Greetings" )

Au Revoir (Awe-Reh-Vwah..you've probably heard this one before) means goodbye. I believe this is also a polite form but I'm not for sure.

--

Bon Appetït (Bone-ah-pah-tee[t]) - Enjoy your meal!

Bon Voyage (Bahn-Voy-aje..pronounce the g like the french j) - Have a nice trip.

if I got that pronunciation wrong, it's cause I kinda guessed at it..xD I read ahead of the teacher for that one. I haven't heard it spoken yet.

Mm..okay..comments..complaints..questions...comment THIS journal entry if it's meant for something about THIS journal entry. Don't comment my profile or PM me. Comment the journal entry!

Also don't just tell me that I got it all wrong. Tell me what I got wrong so I can fix it and I know I did get some things wrong..for god's sakes people I've only taken french for 3 days..>_>;; I'm teaching this as I go so that way I don't leave things out.
