(A short fan-fic based on the FMA Movie: Conqueror of Shambala. I just kinda wondered what Roy might've done or said while he was visiting Hughes' grave. I guess it turned out alright. Tell me what you think)
The sky was like a distant memory as the sun's golden rays shone down with only few clouds interrupting them as they passed by on a gently blowing breeze. They formed themselves into small animals and more recognizable objects while others remained as puffy white blobs. It was as if they were offering their shape-shifting talents to humor the sleepy spirits of the dead soldiers that rested below them. The wind blew lightly through the cemetery, whispering tidings of what it had heard as it weaved in and around the unadorned identical stone plaques that stood erect upon the soft ground. They were the only sign of the beings buried beneath. As the wind persisted in telling its secrets to its deaf audience, its tone changed to a more solemn one, quieting down as a lone, crestfallen figure made its way across the cemetery grounds.
He walked through the field of tombstones in respectful silence, a small bouquet of flowers in hand and a grim solemn expression upon his face. His features only marred by a large black eye-patch that rested over where he once had a left eye. He was dressed in formal military attire, the colored lapel upon his right breast showed he was nothing more than a lowly Corporal of the State Military. The bands upon his shoulders had faded slightly, suggesting that something had once been placed there. His face that might have once seemed youthful had now begun to show signs of wear and dislike for the years wrought upon him. This had once been a prouder man.
As he walked along the rows of fallen soldiers, his remaining eye befell a plaque bearing a familiar name. It was the name of an old friend that had departed from this world all too soon, or so he felt. He stared at the stone in quiet thought, allowing himself to reminisce in the past for several moments before finding his way back to the present.
"Four years..." he began quietly, "I can't believe it's only been four years now...Feels like so much longer..." He paused and shook his head slowly at realizing how foolish he was being; talking to the dead. Then again, he had already proven that he had always been a foolish being with his head in a false reality, "You know, sometimes I can't help but wonder...was it really worth all the trouble we've gone through...doing what I had done...Tossing aside all our hard work; our goals and dreams...sacrificing all of our attempts of leading Amestris to a brighter future by bringing Bradley's reign to an end...I realize now that it had been too soon to have done something that drastic. There really wasn't any way I could have ensured that the military would now keep the best interests of the people as their first and foremost priority...If you've been watching then you know that the Parliament hasn't been much better in upholding that idea..."
He lowered his head, allowing his bangs to shadow his eyes as a small, pained half smile formed at his lips, "I must look pretty pathetic to you by now, huh?" he chided himself, "Went from General to Corporal in little less than a month...having to stand guard at that frozen wasteland for as long as I decide to serve in the military...I could have quit while I still had that rank...and part of me still thinks I should've, but that would've just proven them right...And I guess I'm just too stubborn to admit defeat like that." he paused again as a small thought occurred to him, "Gotta wonder sometimes about who the real victor of that fight was...Me?...or Bradley?...I can't really decide anymore."
He let out a strained breath and the smile was replaced with a sullen look, "You know...I even stopped using alchemy. I figured it was the best I could do now...the only thing I could do now...Stop using the one force that had caused so much pain and destruction of countless lives...So much for the great 'Flame Alchemist', huh?"
He raised his head and blinked a few times. A sense of surprise taking over at finding his eye had become a bit misted. He had never been one for tears and to find that they had begun to form so easily troubled him. He lifted his gaze to endless blue stretching out above him, taking in a breath and letting it out slowly in a compressed sigh as he regained his composure.
"I don't know how to make it up to you, Hughes..." He kneeled down and carefully placed the bouquet at the foot of the tombstone, "...Forgive me..."
He stood up and took a step back from the gravesite. His right arm slowly raised itself into a final salute before dropping back to his side. He turned and left, allowing the wind to retell the story once more.
