Chapter Thirty-Eight
Maya suddenly slammed back down to Earth and she shoved Richard away, “No, no, no! This isn’t the right thing to do! We shouldn’t have done that!”
He stepped away and put his hand over his mouth, “I know, I know. That was wrong.”
“I loved you with all my heart Richard,” she mumbled, “But you were too afraid to try and make this work. And now I have to move on with someone who won’t be afraid.”
Maya smoothed her hair back down and started walking away. She had only taken a few steps when Richard shouted, “I’m not afraid this time Maya!”
Maya stopped and turned around, having no idea what to say to him. Now she was even more confused. It was better when Richard was trying to use Olivia to piss her off. Now he was just making this even harder, “I don’t know Richard. I-I need to think.”
She hurried off before Richard could say anything else to her. She headed for the bathroom before going to Charlie’s classroom. Crying had made her mascara run a bit and she had smeared it when she wiped them off her face in the parking lot. She cleaned off her face with a wet paper towel and reapplied the mascara. Before she left the bathroom she just stood there and looked at her reflection in the mirror. Her eyes were still red but she hoped it would be too dark to notice. She left the bathroom and headed to Charlie’s classroom. He was sitting at his desk with his coat over his arm, “What took you so long?”
“I’m sorry,” Maya chuckled, scratching the back of her head, “I stopped at home to change and then I got here and realized I had to use the bathroom really bad. But I’m here now! So let’s go.”
Charlie wrapped his arm around her and kissed her. Maya flinched when their lips came together. She had to convince herself that Charlie wouldn’t know that she’d just kissed Richard but she couldn’t do it. She was sure that Charlie knew but she had to forget about it and have an amazing date. She momentarily hated Richard for making this more complicated than it needed to be, though she could never bring herself to hate Richard for very long.
“Thanks for letting me stay with you,” Jade said as she got into Norman’s car with him, “We just need to stop at Maya’s house real quick so I can pack a bag.”
Norman nodded as he pulled out of the parking lot. Jade leaned over to get a good look at his face, “Are you sure you’re ok with me staying with you? I don’t mind being alone for a few hours. That’s what I should do, instead of letting everyone baby-sit me. I could even go home if I was really scared. You don’t need to do this for me.”
“Jade stop,” he said with a laugh, “This isn’t going to be weird at all Jade. I’ll be on the couch tonight it’s no big deal.”
“Ok, as long as it’s not weird for you,” Jade said, unbuckling her seatbelt as Norman pulled into the driveway. He started getting out of the car and Jade stopped as she opened the door, “You don’t need to go inside with me ya know.”
“I don’t need to but I’m going to anyway,” he said. Jade rolled her eyes as the two of them walked up to the porch. She heard a thump coming from inside and Jade froze before she could unlock the door. She took a deep breath and unlocked the door and shoved open the door. Luckily, the entire living room was untouched.
“Oh…that thump was all in my head,” Jade chuckled, putting her hand on her chest in hopes of slowing down her racing heart, “I’m losing my head here.”
“It’s fine,” Norman walked with Jade into the guest room where she was staying. When they opened the door, Jade almost fell back into Norman’s arms. Every other room in the house was perfectly clean but her room was completely trashed. The mattress was turned over and all her bedding was tossed all over the room. Every item of clothing had been taken out of her bags and were scattered across the floor and her textbooks and notebooks were ripped up and pages were on the floor and the bookshelf and her bed. The window above her bed had been smashed. And not only were the wooden bookshelves covered in ripped up paper and clothes, the wood was scratched all to hell. Jade’s face crumpled up and she turned and shoved her face into his chest. Norman wrapped his arms around her and gripped onto her tightly, backing out of the destroyed room, “Let’s just go. We’ll stop at your house and get you some clothes.”
“Maya is gonna be so mad,” Jade mumbled through tears, turning back around to look at the damage done to this room.
“Maya isn’t going to get mad at you,” Norman grabbed Jade and dragged her out of the house, locking it on his way out, “She’ll understand. And if she doesn’t, I’ll write her a check for the damage. Let’s just go.”
Audrey had trouble sleeping that night and she was barely able to function when she drove herself to school the next morning. She sat in her car when she pulled into a spot and closed her eyes for a minute just to get a little rest before her first class of the day. She leaned her seat back and was about to doze off when she heard a loud screeching noise. She jumped out of her car and found Vanessa with her keys in her hand and a long white line going across the side of Audrey’s car.
“What are you doing?” Audrey asked, admiring the work Maya had done to Vanessa’s face, “I thought we were done with this.”
Vanessa licked her fat lower lip and looked down for a second to hide her bruised face, “Elizabeth and I weren’t aware that your friends fought all your battles for you.”
“Speaking of Elizabeth, where is she?” Audrey asked.
“She chickened out,” Vanessa replied.
“If Elizabeth can stop why can’t you?”
“Because I believe in fairness,” Vanessa explained, “I fight for those who work hard for what they do especially when they come in second to a whore.”
“I’m not having this conversation anymore,” Audrey said, “I didn’t do anything to influence that competition. I’m not like that. I’ve never been like that. Do I look like someone who is capable of doing that?”
Vanessa actually took a second to look at her up and down and then she shrugged, “Looks can be deceiving Audrey.”
“So to get revenge on me for ‘being a whore to win a competition’ you damaged my car?” Audrey stared at the line Vanessa had made with her key, “What kind of logic is that?! What’s the matter with you?!”
Vanessa admired her work and smirked with a shrug, “I think it’s a fair trade. Your friend messed up my face, I mess up your car. You’re gonna go ahead and take her punishment.”
“You’re such a b***h!” Audrey shouted as Vanessa sauntered off. Vanessa waved with one hand while her other hand tossed her keys into the air, laughing as she did. Audrey looked at the line again and clenched her fists, swinging them into the air like a crazy person to keep herself from screaming.
So, Maya's part was a little short this time around so I shortened everyone's....although...when is Audrey's part of the chapter ever long? Anyways, this was like...90% filler...I'm not good at this LOL!
