Chapter Fourteen
There was something about the morning after Halloween that just made you feel like you had a hangover even if you didn’t drink. Lucky for Jade, it was Friday which meant she had no classes and it was her day off. So when she woke up at around eight, she ended up falling back asleep with a big stupid grin on her face. When she did finally get up and shower, she discovered a missed call from Norman. She hopped onto her bed and dialed his number and waited for about a minute before he answered.
“Did I interrupt anything?” she asked as she took the towel off her wet head.
“No actually,” he replied, “My last class until noon just ended. I was hoping we could meet for lunch.”
“Of course,” Jade said. The two of them met at a little out of the way diner and sat in the corner away from everyone else. Jade was still exhausted from last night, since she’d been out later than she intended. Her mom had not been pleased that Jade had come home late and set off the dogs. But it was worth it to be able to see him.
“So how have you been lately?” he asked, “With the whole…ya know…”
“Stalker?” Jade pulled a piece off her chicken strip and blew on it before she dipped it in her ranch cup, “I’m doing better thanks to you. I could actually drive over here by myself without being paranoid that someone was following me.”
“I’m glad I could help you,” he said.
“Those days were so horrible for me and you were there for me without me having to ask you,” she grabbed his hand and squeezed, giving him a warm smile, “I’m really glad I have you.”
He leaned over the table and kissed her, holding her face with the hand that wasn’t already holding onto hers. They sat back down to continue eating. Jade took the piece of chicken she’d left in her ranch and popped it into her mouth, licking the ranch that ended up on the corner of her mouth. She swallowed it and pointed to his sandwich, “I see a piece of bacon in there. Give it.”
Norman lowered his eyebrows in confused as he slid the piece of bacon out and handed it to her, “I wasn’t aware that you had an obsession with bacon.”
Jade licked off the bit of mustard on the piece of bacon he’d given her and smiled playfully, “Bacon is the one sure way to win me over.”
Norman watched Jade bite into the bacon and close her eyes, sighing loudly and leaning back in her seat. He raised his eyebrows, fascinated by her reaction to a piece of meat but his lips twitched slightly trying to smile, “Goddamn Jade.”
She opened her eyes like he’d just slammed her back down to reality, “What?”
“You sound like you were having sex with it,” Norman said. Jade almost spit her bite of bacon out laughing.
“I did not! I just really like bacon!” she argued. She folded her arms and her cheeks turned a bright red, “Now you make me feel self conscious!”
“No, no,” he said with a smirk. He folded his hands and rested his chin on them, “I like it.”
Jade finished off the strip of bacon and wiped her hands with a napkin, “Nope. You have another class in an hour. I can’t help you there.”
They paid the check and walked out of the diner together towards Jade’s car. Just as she was about to open her car door, he pushed the door shut, “I wanna ask you something before you go.”
“Ask away,” she said.
“I want you to spend the night with me,” he said. The tone of his voice was completely normal but she could see the uneasiness written all over his face. Jade wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Nothing would make me happier,” she said, kissing him lightly on the cheek, “I’ll come back to the school at six.”
Norman’s eyes lit up like a little boy and he quickly kissed her before running off to his own car. As he got into his car, she waved her arm and parted with, “I’ll see you later!”
Maya didn’t have any classes today so she had planned on job hunting for most of the day. But when Richard had called her and invited her to breakfast at that coffee shop she loved so much, it didn’t take much convincing to tear her away from her computer. He’d picked her up and off they went.
“I hope I wasn’t interrupting anything important,” he said as he stopped at a red light.
“Oh no,” she said, “I’m not normally a breakfast person but I’m dying for some French toast right now.”
Richard chuckled as he turned into the parking lot, “I had no idea you weren’t a breakfast person.”
They walked in and Maya felt herself get a little too excited. She would live at this coffee shop if they let her. The two of them sat down together in a little booth in the corner of the shop. After they ordered and had a few minutes to talk, Maya started with, “So…I was thinking…”
“About?” Richard said as the waitress dropped off their drinks. He stirred in a packet of sugar into his coffee and waited for her to continue.
“Well it seems like we never have the opportunity to be alone,” Maya said, “I mean we try to and then…someone comes along and interrupts.”
Richard nodded. Both of them went back to that day they’d almost taken it all the way and then Frank came and interrupted them. The thought made Maya a little angry but she moved past it to finish her thought, “So anyway, it occurred to me that I live alone. So why don’t you spend the weekend with me? Then we could be alone. All weekend.”
Richard smirked, “I have to say I’m intrigued.”
“Nothing has a chance of interrupting us,” Maya said.
Richard started to laugh just as their food was being brought to their table, “I don’t know Maya. We have this tendency of getting interrupted a lot.”
“Only by Frank and he would have no reason to come to my house,” Maya said as she poured her syrup onto her French toast, “The whole weekend Richard. Just you and me.”
Richard picked up his fork and pointed it at her with a smile, “You’ve talked me into it Maya!”
After they paid the check, they made a quick stop at Richard’s house so he could pack for the weekend. Maya only had to wait a few minutes for him to come running out with a large backpack. He threw it into the backseat with purpose and they headed back to Maya’s house.
“Well, this is my house,” she said, opening the front door. She tossed her keys into her purse and put the purse on the recliner, “What do you think?”
“You have a lovely home,” he said.
“Oh, thanks,” she said, “My dad is paying for this until I get some work and then I’ll get some roommates. But that’s not important right now.”
He pulled her against him and kissed her, tangling his fingers up in her hair. She started backing up to lead them to her bedroom but she tripped and they ended up on the couch. At that point, they were much too focused on each other to care where they were. Her hands struggled to unbutton his shirt and he stopped her, sitting up on his knees long enough to discard his shirt. When he leaned back down to kiss her, they began to hear footsteps going up the porch.
“Goddamnit,” she grumbled. She heard a key going into a lock and that got her up, “********! It’s my dad! Richard, go into my bedroom.”
She threw his shirt at him and he tripped over everything in her living room to get to her bedroom. She smoothed out her clothes and hair just as her dad opened the door, “Daddy! Hi! What are you doing here?”
“I need a reason to come and visit you?” he said. Maya hopped up on her feet and greeted her dad with a big hug, “No of course not. You just scared the s**t out of me.”
Maya did her very best to keep her dad from even going into the hallway. She felt like he would just sense Richard’s presence if he went into the hallway so she kept him far away from that area. Her dad would kill her if he found out she was dating a professor. And killing her would be showing mercy.
“So today’s the day!” Tom said to Audrey, “You send in the project we’ve been working on since September!”
“I know,” she said halfheartedly. Tom frowned and grabbed her arms gently, “Audrey, I know you don’t want it to be this way but-”
“I know,” she said again, smiling at him so he wouldn’t think she was angry with him, “I just don’t think it’s fair that you have to give up credit even though you worked on this as much as I did.”
“It doesn’t mean that much to me,” Tom said with a dismissive shrug, “I can go to London anytime I want. But you have a chance to study there. Not many people get an opportunity like this. So I demand that you do this. Don’t worry about leaving me behind. I’ll be fine.”
“Well I won’t be,” she said, “I don’t wanna be without you Tom.”
“Long distance is a thing you know,” he replied, “With all the technology we have today, no one is alone anymore. We have all kinds of things.”
“It won’t be the same as being with you,” Audrey mumbled, hanging her head and crossing her arms. Tom wrapped his arms around her and kissed her on the cheek, “You wouldn’t be in London forever.”
“But what if I get some huge job there that makes me stay in London forever?” she asked, her eyes widening, “What then?”
“If that were to happen, I’d simply move to London,” he said, shrugging again like the answer was simple, “It’s no big deal Audrey. I’d travel all over the world for you.”
Audrey brought their lips together but wouldn’t let him go even when their lips broke apart, “You’re amazing Tom. Really.”
“And you are too Audrey,” he said. He nudged her and began shooing her, “Now go on. You have a project to send in.”
Audrey headed for the gallery, which was where people were turning in their projects. As she drove down the street alone, she had time to really think about it with no objections from Tom to cloud her judgment. Was it really truly worth it? How different would school in London be from school in California? She had a life here. She had her family and she had Maya and Jade and she had Tom. She had no one in London. And making new friends was hard. And keeping in touch with everyone back home would be hard. And Audrey knew taking the easy path was never a good idea but she just wasn’t sure she wanted to do this. Not without Tom anyway. She parked in front of the gallery but just sat there, watching people come in with their own projects and then leave empty handed with looks of hope and determination. Audrey just wasn’t feeling that kind of determination with this. She looked at her work that sat in the passenger’s seat beside her. She felt nothing if she had to do this without Tom. Despite his lack of interest in it, it still wasn’t fair to exclude him. She left the gallery and didn’t once look back. When she got home, she looked at the clock and watched it strike noon, which meant she missed the deadline. And at around 12:30, Tom called her to see how it went.
“So you turned it in?”
Audrey paused, not wanting to lie to him. She knew he’d probably catch her in this lie but she didn’t want him to know she’d broken a promise, “Yeah, I did.”
So...um....Maya's story I pulled out of my a**. It seems like every time Maya goes to get booty, SOMETHING happens. That's because...well...SHE WILL NEVER GET THE BOOTY HAHAHAHAHA. Ahem...anyways...Audrey's was actually NOT pulled out of my a** but the next chapter probably will be so...um...awkward. Jade is the only one who is easy to write. Why is this? LOL ~B
