The sky was black with arrows, their flaming tips like the gleam of orange stars. I had never seen so many, not pointed at me at least. Around me the charge faltered and the men scrambled for their shields, lifting them or scattering in hopes that spreading out will give the archers less of a target. Of course, considering the sky itself had been blocked out, I doubted the archers were truly aiming.
Horses screamed and I could hear Sora's voice rising above the others.
"Shields! Draw up your sheilds!" She screamed, her battle voice echoing with the strength of magic. Still the men and women of our army scrambled, their mounts screaming as horses fell over in the wet soil, crushing their riders.
It felt like the arrows were coming at a crawl, like all of time had frozen as they sailed through the air. Sora's voice was was closer now. Turning my head I looked at her, it was a momentary glimpse, and our eyes only met for a moment. Yet that was all that was needed.
I saw her eyes widen, saw that she wanted to question my abilities, but then thought better of it. Instead she turned and began clearing the area around me with renewed vigor. "Get back!" She screamed, her hand moved to brush her throat, amplifying her voice so that it boomed even louder, drowning out the screams of horse and man.
Tearing my attention away I looked up at the arrows. If I failed half of our people would be slaughtered before we even got close. The flaming storm was almost at us now, it was hard to believe that everything was actually happening in the span of micro seconds
. Sucking in a breath, my arms shot up, palms facing the barrage. Above me the flames on the tips of the arrows flared as I focused on them. Everything fell away as I funneled all I had into the flames. Above me the sea of arrows was engulfed in it's own fire, my power holding the flames in mid air and stopping the onslaught before it slaughtered us all. My head was pounding as the larger fire fought against my control, thin tendrils of it whipping out, searching for me.
Gasping with effort I could feel my muscles straining beneath my armor. A layer of sweat was now coating my skin and a sense of nausea flowed over me like a wive. Tensing my fingers I forced the flames to fold in on themselves, compressing them into a smaller and smaller area. Slowly, my arms as tense as stone, I brought my hands back towards me. The air was crackling with heat and the horse beneath my body grew nervous, shifting from side to side as the flames grew closer.
The next part happened in a rush. A thin streak of fire flared out and licked me, melting the armored breastplate I wore and making my horse scream in pain. With taste of my flesh fresh, the fire surged free of my control, falling onto my body like a pack of rabid wolves. I only got out half a scream before it poured down my throat and into my lungs. In seconds both horse and I were engulfed in flames, the armor melted off of me and pooled like silver water on the ground. My horse, a beautiful black stallion screamed in agony as the fire burned the skin from it's bones.
Of in the distance somewhere I heard Sora and other screaming.
All I could feel was the fire. It filled my body and covered it, cushioning my fall as my horse was literally incinerated beneath me. Soaking into my skin it filled me till I felt like my body was going to burst with raw energy. At first I was sure I wouldn't be able to hold it, the sheer force of all that fire was almost too much. But eventually it started to die down. The flames absorbed into my skin, until finally they fell away completely.
Once it was safe to approach Sora, followed by Mimi came running to where I lay. Mimi removed her cloak and tossed it over my shoulders as Sora pulled me into a sitting position. "You're bleeding." Mimi muttered, running a finger across my cheek, beneath my eye. Her fingers came back red.
"You shouldn't have done that." Sora cursed, tightening the cloak around my naked body. "We just learned about these powers a week ago. You could have gotten yourself killed." Lifting her head she glared at the men "Well? What are you pussies waiting around for? Charge!" Turning back to Mimi, she nodded to me "Get her out of here and into some new clothes. I'll hold the front till you get back."
Mimi nodded, and helped me to my feet. She was careful not to touch my skin. Even the cloak they had just put on me was beginning to smolder.
This was turning out to be a great start to a battle.
