“I thought you had something in mind.”
She shook her head and shrugged. “Nope.”
They stood there in silence for a moment, then Alex spoke. “So what were you looking at out there?” he asked and nodded toward the door where Marina was standing.
“Oh, nothing. I’m just reflecting back on my childhood.”
“When we weren’t all in turmoil,” Alex said, looking out the door, his eyes unfocused, thinking about his own past.
He had grown up in a different scenario than Marina had. He grew up in a city about fifty miles south of Los Angeles in an unstable environment. He hadn’t gotten out of town much unless it was with his old man who was usually drunk and would pass out while in the middle of a highway with speeding cars all around. Alex wouldn’t have much of a choice but to take the wheel himself if he cared to live at all. Sometimes he would drive as far as some of the freeways would take him; one time that was all the way to Sacramento.
