Here's the beginning: The day was unusually cold for May. Usually it would have been almost sweltering and Marina found this change in temperature very peculiar. She stood outside her Fresno home, looking out over all the charred farmland. She remembered better times every time she would gaze at this pitiful sight. Days when the plants were lush and green; days before the world fell apart. She stood staring at the dry land, remembering when Father would take his F-150 filled with all their produce down south to Los Angeles, and the next day, down to San Diego. It was a very long trip, but she loved it. She would see the ocean and the big city and all the interesting people who shared this world with her, and it gave her a sense of comfort.
