Society was greatly affected by the Industrial Revolution. As new technologies surfaced, improved transportation and changed social roles for women and children followed. However, on the same note, it also led to hazardous working conditions in the cities, along with an increase of child labor. Many cities experienced extreme overpopulation as people moved in search of job opportunities, and poor living conditions. As industry in the cities increased, a multitude of factories sprang up, resulting in large masses of people congregating to the cities in search of jobs. Farm workers who had been replaced by machines left to the cities. Overcrowding became evident in various places as more people flocked to the cities. The living conditions grew increasingly worse, with people dumping wastes into the streets and heavy pollution in the air and water. Working conditions also became poorer-children and women worked long hours in hazardous conditions for little pay, and on the job accidents were common. Working hours ranged from twelve to sixteen hours a day around dangerous machinery and buildings. Social roles experienced various changes as well. Where as before women were expected to stay home and run the household, during the Industrial Revolution they were given more job opportunities and worked long hours in factories. Child labor became more frequent, and living and working conditions for kids were generally unsafe and unhealthy. Transportation improved greatly. Old roads were replaced by newer, better roads. Canals and railroads were built, and the steam engine was invented, increasing speed and options. As the Industrial Revolution took place, it brought with it various changes. Women and children were allowed to work in factories around dangerous machines for long hours, and child labor ran rampant. Overcrowding occurred in cities as masses of people were replaced by machines on farms, and transportation greatly improved.
