Okay, so most know that I (so far) have two gypsy characters: Owphiyr and Kizzy. Owphiyr became a gypsy after leaving the priesthood, becoming a gypsy only in job description. Kizzy, however, is a gypsy not only in job description, but in race/nationality, a racial group called Roma, or Romani. Comparing this the other day, I came upon a song, the Romani(Gypsy) cultural anthem, for two characters that may not be in the same story arc(or even close to it) but are very proud of their status as gypsies. The version I found only includes three verses and is a remix of the original, and the song is in the Romani language, a language slightly similar to Hindi. (And there is your anthropology lesson for the day, folks.)
"Gelem Gelem" or "Djelem Djelem"
Gelem, gelem, lungone dromensa Maladilem bakhtale Romensa Jai ho a Romale, Jai ho a Chavale Romale
Translation:
I went, I went on long roads I met happy Roma
Let there be victory o Roma, Let there be victory o Roma Brothers
Here's the full original song:
Gelem, gelem, lungone dromensa Maladilem bakhtale Romensa A Romale katar tumen aven, E tsarensa bahktale dromensa?
A Romale, A Chavale
Vi man sas ek bari familiya, Murdadas la e kali legiya Aven mansa sa lumniake Roma, Kai putaile e romane droma Ake vriama, usti Rom akana, Men khutasa misto kai kerasa
A Romale, A Chavale
And translation:
I went, I went on long roads I met happy Roma O Roma where do you come from, With tents on happy roads?
O Roma, O brothers
I once had a great family, The Black Legions murdered them Come with me Roma from all the world For the Roma roads have opened Now is the time, rise up Roma now, We will rise high if we act
O Roma, O brothers
