The Escape, and The Encounter
She was running, her feet pounding the streets as she struggled to escape. Her heartbeat raced, breath coming out in short pants, sweat running down the sides of her face. The years she had been imprisoned with this man, her so-called father, an official in Brazil, were a living hell. That is, he was not Aya's real father. She was adopted, though at many times, she wished it was never so. If the man had any intentions of treating her properly, he certainly did not show it. The man was cruel, sick, forcing her into acts a ten year-old was not meant to do. Aya was tainted at an early age, scarred for life. She swallowed the fear welling up now in her chest, when she thought of what she had been through in that household. Of the sleepless nights, of the pain in between her legs as torture was brought upon her. Of the many times she locked herself in her room, crying, wishing she had never been born. Of the many days she wondered what her purpose was in life, and of the many times she could not think of one. Aya was fairly convinced that escaping was the only way out of it. She wanted to escape, to forget her former life with her father. Some deep part of her had hope, though the tiniest shred, that she could find a new life elsewhere.
Breathing heavily, she stopped when the narrow street ended in an alley, and she crouched down. There was an aching in her throat, and she tasted the metallic scent of blood in her mouth. Then she heard footsteps, growing louder and louder. Aya suddenly became afraid- had her father sent people after her? Quite likely the only reason he would was for all the work she did for him- he probably hated the idea of losing a servant, the way he ran things. The fear accelerated with the footsteps. Images formed in her head of what her father would do to her, and Aya shuddered. I don't want to return now. I've come this far... she mentally pleaded.
The stranger came closer, he was at least two feet away now. She looked up at him. Brown locks framed his face, his emerald-green eyes looking down at her. It was a gentle face, kind and caring, certainly someone very unlike her father. How long has it been since Aya had seen a kind face? She was filled with a sense of longing, tears welled up in her eyes. He came closer and knelt in front of her.
"Are you alright? Where are your parents?" he asked, in a soothing voice. Aya stared for a second, trying to decide how to respond. Should she trust this man? His face seemed gentle, but looks can be decieving. For a few minutes, she was torn, and the man just waited, patiently. She spoke in a hesitant voice.
"I don't want to see my father. I ran away... "
She trailed to a stop. The man's eyes frowned. Was it... concern? He stood up, and held out a hand.
"You can stay with me, though it may seem weird to offer this to a stranger." He smiled. Aya wrestled with her self more, though she finally gave in and took the hand.
"But, my father...."
"I'll protect you. Don't worry, I won't let your father find you."
She was struck by suprise. She had expected him to leave after that. Looking up at him, she felt that aching loneliness in her chest again.
"By the way..." he added. "I'm Neil. Neil Dylandy. I think it would be appropriate to know what to call each other, " he remarked with laughter in his voice.
"I'm...Aya. Aya Castro."
She smiled slowly. Perhaps this was the new life she had been searching for- she could only hope. For the first time in her life, she felt like this dream wasn't as hopeless as she thought.
"Come on, I'll show you my apartment."
Neil took her hand again, never letting go of it on the way.

Epilogue In The Heart of Aya Castro, To Neil
It is late at night, and yet i'm sitting here, staring out the window, holding this flight helmet in my hands. Reflecting on the past can be painful, as in my case. You've died, and I've survived, though with difficulty. I look out the window, the moon shines so brightly. It is said that when someone dies, they become a star in the night sky. If that is the case, am I looking up at you right now? I wonder, can you see me, from your pristine spot in the sky? Are you looking at me right now, as I shed my tears? The world seems so much different without you now my love, it's so painful. I miss you, my heart feels as if a part of it has been wrenched out. You know Lyle? He looks so very much like you, it was unbearably painful at first. We're getting along, though I still feel this longing for you whenever I look at him. I'll go on, because I know it's what you would want... right? I'll pull through this, for you, and for Eithen and Aiden. Someday, will I join you in your place in the sky? I believe we will be reunited someday, with all of my heart. So please, will you wait for me, love?
