We have begun our journey to Oregon. I have heard about its valleys and unclaimed land. I am going to claim a piece of land. But I also heard about the horrifying diseases and the Native Americans along the way. Do we have too little water? Or do we have too much? What will we do if we have to cross over a raging river, or make our way up a narrow mountain? I have forgotten to introduce myself! My name is Pat Richards. Sadly, I have no wife, nor children. The only family I have are my wagon mates that I have joined. I have bought two oxen, two horses, and one cow to follow me on my way to follow the Hacker Trail. I am from Iowa. I lived in a small, dark log house. Only the whistling wind, the grass, the trees, and the wild animals stayed by my side. I decided to travel to Oregon because I want to meet new people. I want to discover things I have never seen with my own bare eyes! I am very confident that I will survive with my wagon mates. Even if Oregon is thousands of miles away. When we reach Oregon, I will continue my career as a blacksmith. I would also like to meet a beautiful woman that will make my life shine brighter. When we got to Fort Independence, it was very crowded! There were many families. I could not even count of how many there were! Our wagon train master brought many items. We helped in too. We got mattresses, chairs, toys for the children, bread. I wondered if it would all fit in the wagon! I expect to go through many storms and see many animals, even people and children, die. I hope not!
