Mae Jemison Day Many people over the years have contributed to our society, but have you noticed something unusual? We don’t have a specific holiday that celebrates women. There is President’s Day and martin Luther King, Jr. Day but none of these holidays let us celebrate something a woman did. This is an outrage because citizens have been celebrating one gender, more than the other. We, the people, want a new national holiday that celebrates what a women have accomplished. We should have a holiday called Mae Jemsion Day. Mae Jemison was born on October 17, 1956 and was the youngest member of her family. She moved to Chicago when she was three years old. Her uncle was the first to introduce her to the world of science. She loved science and math. She knew what to do with her life. She graduated at the age of 17 and she went to the University of Stanford. She got a medical degree and worked as a doctor for a few years. She applied to the space program but was turned down. Then Mae tried again the following year. She got in! She and 14 others were chosen out of 2,000 applicants. She was the first African American woman that went into space. This was a great accomplishment at the time. She has influenced a lot of people to believe in their dreams. After she went to space she wrote a book about her struggles to become an astronaut. She visited schools and talked about her life. She has taught people not to give up in the face of failure. She has shown us this when she enrolled in Stanford University, where teachers ignored her questions and comments. She kept on learning even after the teachers ignored her. One of her sayings was ”…even women and other minority group0s can accomplish great things if they were given the opportunity to.” She has overcome many obstacles and is the perfect person to represent our gender. The holiday would represent and celebrate a strong woman who over cam sexual segregation and broke all kings of boundaries. After she went in space man mew realized that women can do anything that men can. Everyone should be recognized for their achievements, so shouldn’t Mae Jemison be recognized as well? She has done countless amount of amazing things that deserve recognition. She was the first African American woman in space. A holiday to honor her would encourage young women to strive for success as well as remind all of society that women can be heroes, too.
