Key Vocabulary words
*Hydroelectric power- electricity produced by the movement of water *Charpoy- wooden bed frame with knotted string in place of a mattress *Purdah- custom that women cover their face with a veil when in public *Irrigate- supplying the land with water *Joint family system- When a man marries he brings his wife to live in his parents’ house and the household includes the uncles and other relatives *Cottage industry- where people make their own goods in their homes *Buffer Zone- country separating opposing forces *Nationalism- pride in one’s country *Deforestation- process of stripping the land of trees *Caste system- system where people are born into distinct rank in society *Partition- divide into parts *Malnutrition- lack of food or an unbalanced diet
Key questions to ask yourself.
*What has the Indian govt. done to help their economy? They have made great advances in farming, industry; education and health care (look at notes/book for details about improvements in subjects.) *What troubles did the Afghanistan have in the 1980’s? Soviet troops marched into Afghanistan which made many people fled and Pakistan and the U.S. helped arm and train Afghan people to kick out the troops but after that civil war broke out and the Taliban’s controlled the region. *What is rural India like? The people live in villages, bicycles common way of travel, wells in every social division, rich people have houses of brick and tiled roofs and cement, poor have house of mud and thatched dry grass, usually only furniture is a charpoy. *Why did East and West Pakistan split and form to different countries? Because the East and West had different cultures and languages and their economics and politics because East paid more taxes then West and when a flood hit East Pakistan the East accused the West for delaying supplies which caused them to fight and the West lost so the East became the independent country Bangladesh. *How are Nepal and Bhutan alike? They are alike because the southern lowlands of both countries are hot and humid, monsoons rains on both countries and they grow the same crops. *How do the major cities in India compare to others around the world? They compare by having many people crowd into them, and they both have major economies in them. *What happened to the Muslim population in India in 1947? India had to split the country one for Hindus one for Muslims so the Muslims moved to Pakistan. *Why is the Indus River important to Pakistan? Because it’s their only source of water through out their country and they use it irrigate their land and produce electric power.

* Hinduism (reincarnation, see worksheet handed out for more religion beliefs) * Mohandas Gandhi (believed in peace) * Hindu VS Islam (very different cultures for example Hindus believe in more gods instead of one.) * Afghanistan and terrorism (extremist believed that killing Americans is good for religion, 9/11) * Trouble in Sri Lanka (civil war, no peace treaty yet)
